Lots of ominous news nowadays, but there are good things too! Thailand's Marriage Equality Law took effect today!

This tweet takes you to the top of a thread that lists all the changes, like replacing gendered terms like husband and wife with spouses, same-sex marriages have full legal status, same-sex couples can adopt and use IVF and create pre-nups, just a whole lot of steps to make them equal.

It's all just so amazing and joyous. They hosted a parade for the newlywed couples!

I love everyone's outfits in Scarlett Hollow (especially Kaneeka's) so I wanted to ask how do you go about designing multiple outfits for each character that are different yet still fit that characters general aesthetic. Also do you have a favorite/least favorite outfit.

Designing outfits is definitely not something that came very naturally to me at the start of Scarlet Hollow, but I've been gettin' the hang of it as I go-- I'd say a lot of it is about the vibe. I sketch a new outfit, and if it feels like they're in a costume, I scrap it. Color in particular gets tricky... one color can throw off a whole look and make them feel like their aura is off. Picking a palette in advance is a good idea!

I think it's mostly about understanding your character and the kinds of choices they make; Kaneeka cares a lot about how others view her, so she presents as very put-together, thus her outfits are always a little complicated and carefully constructed. Whereas Stella is laid back and probably hates having to think about what she's wearing, so she goes with roughly the same combination of jeans and a t shirt every day.

I answered a similar question during an AMA, so I'm paraphrasing from those answers~

Stella: her shirt must match the theme of the episode while also being a believable cryptid/folklore t shirt design. She has a red/neutral theme, plus jeans. Butch sense of fashion with casual sensibilities.

Kaneeka: is a nu-goth, so no corsets or elaborate frills, and no techno-goth or scene/emo accoutrements. Her emo days are far behind her... so now she wears all black, no color besides her red braids, with interesting clothing shapes and the occasional lace or metallic accent. This is pretty close to how I dress so I just think about if it's something I would wear.

Oscar: he's a professional! So suits and button-ups, except his undershirt episode. He has a tan/yellow theme with unsaturated red accents, which he shares with his daughter Rosalina. His outfits are the toughest to mix up, because he dresses nice for work and only owns one suit. But I try to get creative where I can!

Avery: a plant theme, which includes mostly greens, with some purples, oranges, and earthy yellow allowed. Definitely has the widest palette, since they have to have interesting patterned button-ups. Can have a coat if needed, always tan, and nice dress pants that have a little bit of a bellbottom.

Reese: Wears whatever. A vague blue theme. Nothing looks like it fits him right. I have given him a cool jacket for Episode 5, but I can't post that sprite... too spoiler.......

Yeast, Algae, and Bacterial Staples

Yeast and algae are the two major staples of spacer human diets in Runaway to the Stars, providing energy efficient sources of protein, lipids, and carbohydrates.

Yeast is never eaten raw but is found in a variety of processed forms, the most common of which are powders, pastes, and curds. Powders and pastes tend to be most strongly flavored. Some are given flavored additives, or salt-fermented for an even stronger taste. The powder forms (often called nooch) tend to taste cheesy, and the pastes most commonly resemble yeast extracts like Vegemite or Marmite in flavor. Yeast curd is a tofu-like substance with a faint mushroom flavor and high protein content. It’s most popular marinated or fried, and comes in a variety of firmnesses from silken to jerky. “Trained” yeast is genetically modified to produce a specific desired biological compound or set of compounds, and is widely used in the manufacture of synthetic flavors, dairy products, proteins, enzymes, and more.

Algae eaten by spacers is mostly genetically modified chlorophytes such as Botryococcus braunii and the Chlorella genus, and the most commonly cultivated cyanobacteria is Arthrospira platensis (spirulina). These are used to produce a wide variety of refined food products, including flour, sugar, agar, oil, and vitamins. When fermented by yeast, vinegar and spirits can be produced from algae products as well. Algae flour (sometimes called spira) comes in two main forms, green and white. Green flour is unrefined algae powder and can have a very strong grassy taste. White flour is refined to remove most of the compounds in the powder that aren’t starch, and it can be used to make dough. Some white algae flour has synthetic gluten added to give it an elasticity similar to wheat flour, but it is more rare than agar being added as a stabilizing agent. Leavened dough with agar tends to have a more brittle, crumbly structure than glutenous dough.

Fried, baked, or steamed spira dough dumplings with yeast paste and other fillings inside are an iconic spacer food with many regional variations. Jovia’s variation are a steamed rolled bun that uses enough green spira to make the dough green, and has yeast paste painted on the rolled side. Slices of curd are sometimes laid on top with a yellow cherry tomato or egg yolk in the center to make the bun resemble a wheel, or a cross section of a habitat cylinder. These are known as Jovian wheels and they are commonly eaten on Jovian Independence Day.

Spin is a kind of spirulina-based hard liquor produced on Mars, known for its bright green color and strong, controversial flavor. It is traditionally not sweet, but sweetened versions and cocktails are more commonly enjoyed by those less used to the stuff. Clear, relatively flavorless hard-proof liquor produced from algae is generally called spiruine. On Earth, yeast products have been gaining popularity but algal farming remains relatively rare. Soil farming is the cheaper option when air and light are free.

A thing I love about hosting is offering guests their choice of sheets (bc I have a sectional that beds up to three ppl). Some folks don’t think they have a preference until they touch the options. The autistic crew Does know they have prefs & are both visibly relieved to get a choice & apprehensive at Decision.

I wrote this short comic immediately after experiencing a hate crime inside the Wing Luke Museum (Seattle's Asian American history museum). I didn't sit down to make the comic until over a year after it happened, but now it's done. I have exorcized the feelings. And what a day to do it.

I forced myself to finish this so I could get back into comics as a processing tool. It's a little stream of consciousness but I hope it made sense. Took huge inspiration from the work of Benjamin Adam.
