Pleasantly Surprised!
Yesterday was my first "Clean Eating" day and I have to say that I was presently surprised. I started with egg whites, spinach and a whole wheat tortilla with some shredded cheese, had a chicken breast with broccoli and a greek yogurt for lunch and finished the day with whole wheat pasta, rotisserie chicken and asparagus. I felt that I wasn't as hungry and didn't have any cravings for any bad stuff. Next goal is to find time in my crazy work schedule to hit the gym at night.

My goal to live a healthier lifestyle through #myfuelup
Hi, my name is Amanda Smith and I’m a full-time working mom to two beautiful children and a wife. My goal is to live a healthy and happy lifestyle. I have always gone up and down in weight throughout my life and always thought it was normal and “just me”….until I found out that because of my diet and weight, if I didn’t fix it, I wouldn’t be able to have children…a life-long dream of mine. Here starts my story.
In December of 2007, I married Richie Smith. I was 165lbs and at my heaviest weight ever…he loved me anyways. We knew that we wanted children and was going to start right away. We tried for three years with no luck. I went to my OB/GYN and told her that it just wasn’t working and that I felt that I needed to see a specialist. After meeting with a specialist and after several tests, I found out that I had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is a condition caused by inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body inappropriately attacks the thyroid gland - as if it was foreign tissue. The underlying cause of the autoimmune process remains unknown. Hashimoto's thyroiditis tends to occur in families. It can be associated with other autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes or celiac disease. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is 5 to 10 times more common in women than in men and most often starts in adulthood. Since my diagnosis I’ve been prescribed to Levothyroxine, which is closely monitored by my doctor by frequent blood tests and since it’s been in control.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a problem in which a woman's hormones are out of balance. It can cause problems with your periods and make it difficult to get pregnant. PCOS also may cause unwanted changes in the way you look (like weight gain/or trouble losing weight). If it isn't treated, over time it can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. My doctor put me on metformin and advised my to live a healthier lifestyle by eating better and starting an exercise regimen and I should be able to have children once I get everything under control.
After starting to exercise, eat healthier and take my medicine I lost 37lbs and was down to 128lbs. Not only was I looking better, I was feeling better physically and mentally. Six months later I was pregnant with my first child! With each of my pregnancies I was able to get down to my pre-pregnancy weight of 128lbs with lots of dieting and exercise.
Now I’ve pretty much gotten into a routine with balancing work and kids and I’m ready to get even healthier! I’m 5ft 2in and 128lbs with a BMI of 23.4 and even though that is in the “normal” range, I still have a goal of getting my weight down to 120lbs. This goal is for me to feel better about myself and so I can be even healthier for my husband and children.
About a year ago, my husband’s cousin, Michael Vento was at my house for Thanksgiving Dinner and we spoke about living a healthy lifestyle and my goals. He told me that he was starting a website “myfuelup.com” to help people like myself with fitness-oriented diets and meal planning. After that, things got pretty hectic in my life to actually use his site and carry on with my goals. On May 13th, 2014 my PCOS took over my left ovary and left fallopian tube with cysts that were causing me so much pain that I had to have them both removed. Now that I’m fully recovered from surgery I decided to give this a try.
Today, I created my account and the #myfuelup website generated a fitness meal plan for me. Tonight I’m going to the grocery store to get all the items I need and tomorrow with start day 1. I will use this blog to keep you updated and I hope you will follow me through this journey!
If you are interested please go and check out the #myfuelup website at www.myfuelup.com. I will keep you posted on my progress and you can do the same! Let’s do this together!
