bucky doesn't rush, he isn't impetuous. he's a soldier/weapon, trained to kill and follow orders. he knows better than to let his feelings get in the way during a mission when there are other lives at stake. still, he can't help the sense of panic and anger that washes over his mind, clouding his judgement. one second, he's next to diana ; the next, his features are spattered with blood and his gun feels warm on his hand. the echo of gunfire rings in his ears, drowning out the chaos that follows.

he hears her voice — or perhaps someone else's — but the words blur into the background as he marches towards the dead body, kicking it aside only to see the face of a man he doesn't recognize. a stranger, same height, same weight, same features as zemo. he could've sworn it was him: the cadence of their voice, the way they carried themselves, the red book in his hands. the body's a gory mess, beyond saving, so he ignores it. bloody fingers take the book on the ground and flip through the pages, urgently. he finds no trace of familiar russian words or twisted schemes; instead, the pages contain family photos and meaningless handwritten notes. only then does he turn to diana.     ❝     i told you to stay back     ❞
