Assignment 4
Sally Mann “ Untitled ”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Research
The project that the photographer Sally Mann explores is named “Untitled” It is a piece of art that does not shadow us from bodily decay and the cycle that the dead go through. In her work she uses the wet-collodion process, a practice in photography that basically portrays the image as weathered and decaying in a sense as it relates to the main topic. The photographer uses a very interesting technique as she implements a longer focal length that makes the subject appear as if bigger than lifelike by narrowing its angle of view. Sally Mann implements a birds eye view while taking the photograph as she is taking a picture of the body and is trying to portray that it is lifeless, therefore she took the photo from above. The photograph was taken at a forensic site therefore the light must have been coming from above the subject as dead bodies tend to be laying down. Moreover, the light seems to be minimal in the room as half of the face seems to be lit while the other is shaded. In this piece the subject is the decaying body, while there no props seem to be in use as we can only see the face of the deceased. In addition the location of the photograph was at a forensic study site. In conclusion, this photo was taken as a part of the “Untitled” project in 2001.
 What makes a photograph iconic?
Personally for me the reason that makes a photograph iconic is the story behind it or the person who is taking it. Before researching the photograph I was completely oblivious that the subject was deceased, my original thought was that the subject was a kid that was asked to open their eyes wide. Moreover, after finding the truth behind the photograph my perception of the author changed and I began to appreciate the diversity and creativity of the author. The fact that a photo contains a story behind it can make it ten times more interesting than another professional photo because the story opens room for discussion and debate therefore the photograph will gain an audience through this. There are many examples that prove this point as most of the famous photographs seen today have an amazing story behind them, because it's not about the end product it is about the journey taken to reach it.

Question #3
The documentary was very articulate and eye opening as it gave the reader a quick history of photography and how it evolved from a hobby into a fine art. During the documentary it is explained that in the early days of photography it was not considered an art form by many of the population. Nowadays, photography has taken a shift to become part of the capitalist market. Personally I have a feeling that this is very interesting and beneficial for the spectrum that is photography, because now photographers can sell their work and be rewarded and appreciated for the genius that they create. Throughout the documentary we see old photographers that find their work being sold for thousands and even millions from time to time( For example The Pond - Moonlight, which was sold for 2.6$ million). All this reward comes from the fact that photography has entered the capitalist market and many photographers have had their life dramatically change because of this fact. For example, Seydou Keita who was a famous photographer in Mali found his work being admired in the US and later began selling his work there and making a fortune out of it that definitely changed his life. Other people such as Wang Ching Song who explained that he was an outsider in his hometown of Beijing found his work appreciated and valued, these two examples are of many that still happen until today and it is definitely clear that photography has changed the lives of these photographers and rewarded them for their hard work from past years. In conclusion, photography as a field was always interesting and intriguing but its shift to the capital market has made it gain an audience and therefore benefiting the field for the future while also ensuring up and coming photographers that their future is secured.

Reflection
The concept that I chose and felt was very relatable was the third one which is that photos have hidden meanings. Meaning refers to the concept that a image or symbol withholds. When it concerns photography it is obvious that a photo can have hidden meaning that can be interpreted by the watcher. Personally I feel that all photos have stories behind them and therefore carry greater meaning. During the time I was taking my photographs I found that many of them fulfilled the requirements but it is obvious that some had a clear meaning or message while other were a bit random in a sense. In addition, I really appreciated taking several pictures that were different as it dramatically elevated my work as I had a lot to choose from, in other words " quantity delivers quality".My photo portrays how people nowadays are on the brink of drowning in their lives. This personally relates to me and many other students because we are bombarded with a very large amount of expectations and requirements that have to be met. Although It can also be related to the amount of technology that has drowned society into generation that is dependent upon their handheld devices to function on an every day basis, whether that includes socially or even educationally. In conclusion, this is my personal opinion on the matter and it is understandable that another person can look at the photo and interpret it differently and on their own preferences.

How can composition transform an object?
Photography as a respectable field is vast in its knowledge. Moreover, one of the many aspects that known through photography is composition. Composition is basically the combination of components that a photograph or image withholds. In this assignment I learned many aspects including that the correct use of composition can dramatically change the appeal of a photograph. Furthermore, there are many techniques that have opened my mind into the world of photography as I have found very different angles that highlight each specific aspect of a photograph. These angles increased the meaning behind my shots as I appreciated the image more when implementing the techniques. In conclusion, during this assignment I have realized that the correct use of composition is now a crucial part of my future photographic pieces as it elevates my work to a point that I thought was not possible.

Max Hirzel Talk
Last Wednesday the class took part in a virtual meeting that was hosted by famous photographer and expert in the field of photography Max Hirzel. As researched Herzel is a photographer that is mostly known for his work on migrants and expressing their lives throughout his images. Throughout the duration of the talk Hirtzel provided us with examples of his work which I found to be very enlightening and interesting as they show another perspective of a topic that I as a person have never witnessed before. Throughout the talk Max Hirzel pointed out that through doing his work there are many obstacles that he faces and one of them is that he is not afforded the respectable space so that he can work to his full capabilities and without interruption. Moreover Hirzel explained in the talk that migrants as a people have suffered extensively in the past because they fear that their identities could be taken away and they cease to be. Personally I feel that this is something that gives me chills, to know that people live through this constant fear makes me shiver as I would not wish this on my worst enemy.  During the discussion Hirzel presented us with his work “Migrant Bodies” which basically portrays the migrants that currently live in the countries of Italy and Senegal and the hardships that they face on a daily basis. In his work we see that the migrants’ faces are lost of hope and that they have given up on life. I believe that his work is very noble as it raises awareness about a society and a community that others tend to forget and I believe that his work has certainly benefited the migrants as a whole although it didn’t gain sufficient popularity in Italy.

Tumblr media
Photography is a wide spectrum that has many different sides and angles that help explain the true meaning that photos and pictures behold. In the case of Khalik Allah Khalik Allah it is clear that he falls behind a category which can be expressed as street photography. It is clear that Khalik is enlightening people on the different situations that black people live in, while also trying to raise awareness in order to help them as he stated that nobody cares about the people he is recording.
Tumblr media
Moreover, Photography is a powerful tool that can shape civilizations and influence people to better themselves. Khalik believes that our purpose in life is to extend light into other people’s lives, meaning that he aims to use photography as means to better the community’s overall morale and well being. In theory, this sounds great, but in reality photography can do so much, it can aid in the advancement of a community in certain aspects such as raising morale and acquiring support but only people can share light and prosperity with one another.
Tumblr media
Photography can be a means to capture a moment and make it last in the memory of all people. Therefore, Khalik’s words which are “to make knowledge born” have meaning behind them as they state that knowledge is born and that we as photographers make knowledge live on as we enlighten others with sceneries and images that educate people on knowledge that would have been oblivious to others without the preservation that is photography.
Tumblr media
Many Photographers are inspired by different happenings in their life that fuel their creativity and help them thrive to be better. In the case of Khalik Allah Khalik Allah his inspiration comes from his duty to help the world understand and accept the communities that have been looked down upon. Khalik believes that his work helps the watcher dive into the mind of the people that are struggling by showing the situation from the perspective of the victim.
Tumblr media
Khalik believes that his work will help people understand the community. Personally I have been enlightened in a sense as I felt that I was one of them throughout the video as he dives deep into the world that has consumed these people and left them damaged. Moreover, Khalik’s work is very inspiring and full of heart as he speaks from his mind and gives his honest opinion on the situation and states what these people go through everyday.
