PAPER MACHINE MUSIC
Ex-Viva Stereo guitarist Rob McKinlay spoke to us about his amazing new project “Paper Machine Music” and his debut release “Glimpse”
GLIMPSE, YOUR FIRST SOLO ALBUM, TELL US ABOUT HOW THIS CAME TOGETHER?
I used to be in a band called Viva Stereo from 2002 – 2012, releasing four albums on our own Much Better Records label and gigged about the UK for most of those years. But life started 'getting in the way' with kids and partners and jobs and this led to 3 of the four of us moving away from Glasgow. At the end we were Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fort William and Leicester and it just became harder and harder to get together and write anything new. I've always written stuff in my own house on my own, and had some form of recording ability. Back in the day it was a 4 track porta studio with a C90 cassette. Then I made a move onto PC and Pro_Tools. Anyway, when the VS started to slowly fracture I kept recording my own stuff. Then three of us kept on as Gravity Waves with me moving onto drums. Aye, and that band never quite took off so I kept recording in my house up in Fort William and coming down to the Central belt less and less. And then around 2015 I realised that what I really wanted to do was a solo record as I had started to collect a bunch of tunes that I was getting precious about.
COULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MUSIC MAKING PROCESS?
As I have four kids the process now if a bit more rushed than it used to be! Back in my carefree days I could spend 4-6hrs a night 3-5 nights a week in my little studio tinkering, re-recording and remixing. I could spend 2-3 hrs just trying to get the right guitar tone or effect. Or play the same part with different guitars and set ups. But now, although I play a lot around the house, grabbing 20 minutes here and there to go over ideas, when it comes to recording it is a very quick and efficient process now. I'll know that I have a free weekend day coming up in two weeks time and then I will start to plan what I am going to record. And on the day its hit record and do 3 or 4 takes of each part and then move on. Cause I will record drums as well, or maybe a drum machine. Then during the next couple of weeks I'll bounce it down and stick it on my mp3 player and listen to it whilst I'm out with the dog. Thinking of bass lines, or other guitar parts. Then one night of a week i'll disappear into the studio whilst the kids are getting ready for bed and 'make a noise' as I call it for an hr and try some things out. The kids get bored hearing the same 30 part of a tune on a loop but hey, what are you going to do! And then in a couple of weeks time I'l try and grab another free weekend day and record what I have been thinking/playing and see if that works. And vocal wise I'll either start with an idea and build around it or get most of the music done and then try and get a melody later. Some tunes are harder than others/ Like 'the Iron Heel' with Paul Tierney from lonely Tourist. I had the tune pretty mush finished but I couldn't come up with a melody/words that I thought were any good so I farmed it out to him. And to Paul’s credit he turned it round and gave me my finished song in 3 wks!
YOU RECORDED 4 ALBUMS WITH VIVA STEREO, HOW DID THIS PROCESS DIFFER/COMPARE?
Si the VS albums were mostly recorded in Studios. Either Chem19 or the Diving Bell. These were done in concentrated bursts where we would do a fri-sun and know 90% of what we were going to record before we went in. The last album was done over about 20 days recording over 12 months. This Paper Machine Music album was 3yrs but with thinking/writing/recording/mixing/ tweaking and listening done almost continually! With PMM I did make it down to Chem19 for 1 day, to record drums with Gavin Brown (Onthefly) as I felt a couple of tunes needed a different feel. And a better drummer! I also got Derek O'Neill to play some keys/organ for me again to add something a little different. Derek also engineered and mixed the whole album for me at his 'Living Room' studio. Derek mixed the last Viva Stereo album, Endure the Dark, and I really enjoy working with him and totally trust his ear.
PAPER MACHINE MUSIC, WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM?
The name came from mis-reading a translation of one of the first sound recording pieces of equipment invented. It was french and and from the late 1890's and they recorded onto paper. This was even before wax cylinders. I think the true translation is 'machine music on paper...'but I mis remembered it and Paper Machine Music came about. There is also an album by Lou Reed that is 45 minutes of feedback and drones call 'Metal machine Music'. I have never heard it but I always liked the shear 'fuck you-ness' of that sentiment.
YOU COLLABORATED WITH KING CREOSOTE & LONELY TOURIST ON GLIMPSE, WHO ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH?
There is a alt-country singer that I love called Courtney Tidwell who released two albums about 10 yrs ago. And then she had one album with Kurt Wagner from Lamchop, and then nothing... I have tried to find here on twitter so I can sheepishly 'approach' her and see if she is still doing any music but with out any luck. Try out her album called 'Boys'. The sound and tunes are just amazing. A bit of a slow burner but if its for you you will love it.
THE NEW ALBUM WAS HAND-MADE, EACH COVER SPRAY PAINTED AND STAMPED BY YOURSELF, HOW WAS THIS?
So I made 50 copies and the start of each process was fun, but see by number 24 of each stage I was cursing myself. I have to say that this was influenced by Gav at De-fence and the care and love that he always put into his releases. That and the fact that it seemed a little cheaper to do as much of it yourself as possible! I did love the reveal of each album once I had taped up the sleeve, spray painted it and then let it dry for a day. When you pull of the tape it is kind of cool. I made 50 and it was really hard to let go of about 20 of them because I wanted to keep them all!
ARE YOU PLANNING ON ANY LIVE SHOWS?
Yes. I'm getting a band together and will be playing the following shows in March 2019. I've also got Lonely Tourist suckered in to coming on the three date 'tour' as well, which I am chuffed about. As yet I can't confirm who will be the third band/act but it will be sorted soon.

Sun 3rd March – The Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh

INTRODUCING - LUCIDS
PLEASE GIVE US A BIO ON THE BAND AND HOW YOU GOT TOGETHER?
We are an up and coming four-piece alternative rock band from Grangemouth, Scotland. We formed in 2016 when Ian McIntyre (lead vocals, guitar) and Danny Maclaren (lead vocals, guitar) decided it was our time to take on the UK indie scene which we adored.
After spending time creating our own authentic sound, we asked Dean Fullarton (bass) and Stuart McIntyre (drums) to join the band.
We then quickly gained some popularity in the Scottish Indie music scene, and within a few months of gigging around Glasgow and Edinburgh, had headlined some of the UK's best live venues - including King Tut's Wah Wah hut.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES AND FANS OF WHICH BANDS WILL LOVE YOUR MUSIC?
I think we have and advantage that we have two songwriters in the band (Ian and Danny) so we have a wide variety of influences in our music. Where Ian is heavily influenced by the music he grew up listening to such as Elvis and The Who, Danny has always been inspired by Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones. However, they both share a common love for bands from the more recent Indie scene such as Arctic Monkeys, Courteeners, The Libertines and DMA's and we think it can be seen in our music whilst also keeping it as original and authentic as possible.
WHAT CURRENT MUSIC ARE YOU GUYS LISTENING TO?
Everyone in the band has been listening to Gerry Cinnamon's debut album "Erratic Cinematic" recently we just can't seem to get enough of it! Peace and DMA's have also been releasing a lot of new tracks at the minute ahead of their new albums so we've been listening to them a lot as well.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FORTHCOMING SINGLE/EP
In November 2017 we recorded our debut single "The Fall" with the UK's leading independent music label - Sound-Hub records - which is due to be released 4th May and we couldn't be prouder of it!
The Fall' was one of the first songs written by Ian and Danny and it was the one we all instantly loved the most. It was written in one sitting and the lyrics have never changed since - which we've found is pretty rare with songs that we play all the time! We don't like to over-analyse our songs when people ask what they're about, we like to leave it to peoples imagination. But we think 'The Fall' is simply a song about someone who is struggling to walk away from a broken relationship in some way.
DO YOU HAVE ANY GIGS COMING UP AND WHAT VENUE WOULD YOU LOVE TO PLAY?
Yes we're playing Behind The Wall in Falkirk on the 12th May following the release of 'The Fall'! We should have another couple lined up around Glasgow and Edinburgh soon so keep your eyes peeled!
There's absolutely no doubt to us a sold out show in The Barrowlands is our dream, that's what we're aiming for
The Fall out Friday 4th May.

INTRODUCING - PRIMES
Introducing Primes, a 3-piece alternative rock band from Falkirk with members Ollie Kitchen (Lead Vocals, Bass), Sarah Monteith-Skelton (Guitar, Vocals) and Reece Ryan (Drums, Vocals).
PLEASE GIVE US A BIO ON THE BAND, AND HOW YOU GOT TOGETHER?
Primes were formed in November 2017 by band member Sarah. Coming from slightly different musical backgrounds, the band have come together by our groups of friends and family and brought their experiences with them.
PRIMES, WHERE DID THE NAME ORIGINATE?
We would say we are in the Primes of our music. Having spent years crafting our individual sounds, we believe that working together will take us to the prime of our abilities.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES AND FANS OF WHICH BANDS WILL LOVE YOUR MUSIC?
Our main influences are Biffy Clyro, Twin Atlantic, Placebo, Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon and Linkin Park. We take influence from a range of bands which is what creates our unique sound. We take influence from bands like Biffy and Twin with the heavy riffs mixed with melodic melodies, hook line choruses and packed full of feeling.
WHAT CURRENT MUSIC ARE YOU ALL LISTENING TO?
All of the band is listening to a lot of different music at the moment. We all have a wide range in music taste. Ollie mostly 60’s, Sarah mostly Alternative Rock/Pop and Reece is into slightly heavier stuff. We all follow the Scottish music scene and are big fans of local talent.
ANY SINGLES/EP'S/ALBUMS IN THE PIPELINE?
We released our debut single "Breathe" which we recorded at Chamber Studios in Edinburgh, the single and video are out now!
Looking to the future with our releases we are hoping to have our second release “Don’t forget your memories” out this spring. Our plan is to release a string of singles to keep it fresh and interesting. We are always writing new material and trying new things with our music so we don’t want to rush an E.P.
DO YOU HAVE ANY GIGS COMING UP AND WHAT VENUE WOULD YOU LOVE TO PLAY?
We have our debut headline show on the 10th of March at King Tuts in Glasgow. This year is going to be a big one with our main focus on trying to get on festivals such as Party in The Palace, Kendal Calling and we have applied for a few more so we will see how that goes.
We would also like to do a U.K. tour at some point later this year. Venues such as Barrowlands and Cavern Club in Liverpool are high on our list of priorities.

INTRODUCING - BITTER ALICE
Introducing Bitter Alice, a 5-piece hard rock band consisting of members Kieran Hunter (Vocals), Jack Turner (Rhythm Guitar), Craig Turnbull (Lead Guitar), Dylan Fullarton (Bass) and Ben White (Drums). We caught up with the band last month who have been in the studio working towards their debut gig;
PLEASE GIVE US A BIO ON THE BAND, AND HOW YOU GOT TOGETHER?
Bitter Alice are a 5-piece hard rock band from Central Scotland. We formed early 2017 as a means to have a laid back and fun time in the studio after we all felt disheartened by the way our previous bands had turned out. However, we soon realised that our musical chemistry was too great not to pursue something more professional again and got straight to work. We found early on that our writing process came very naturally.
BITTER ALICE, WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM?
The name was actually something we spent a good few weeks trading ideas with in our online group chat. Trying to come up with the perfect name that represents your music is actually quite a difficult task however we feel like we’ve nailed it! It was actually Jacks dad who brought “Bitter Alice” to the table. We instantly loved it as we felt it was the perfect metaphor for all the prima-donnas we had all worked with in the past that we’ve now escaped from.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES AND FANS OF WHICH BANDS WILL LOVE YOUR MUSIC?
The great thing about this band is we’ve all became really great friends through our own influences. Being able to connect with your band mates through music is literally the most basic foundation to writing great songs and music that is actually honest. Our biggest influence as a band would have to be Guns N’ Roses. Not just as a band, but individually the members of Guns have been a massive part in shaping us as musicians from an early age. We would definitely not be doing this today if it wasn’t for a mutual respect for their music.
WHAT CURRENT MUSIC ARE YOU GUYS LISTENING TO?
We actually take a great interest in the bands releasing music in our local area. Bands such as; Ghostwriter, Fairweather and the Elements, The Patryns, The Nickajack Men frequent our playlists. We all feel that it is very important to support our local scene as having a strong home following is the key to every bands success in the long run. Other bands we’re currently listening to include anything from The Dead Daises to surprisingly, the brand new Harry Styles album. Inspiration can come from anywhere and it’s important not to keep yourself boxed into the same music.
DO YOU HAVE ANY GIGS COMING UP AND WHAT VENUE WOULD YOU LOVE TO PLAY?
We have actually just announced our debut show. We’re playing Ivory Blacks on Sunday 27th August and we’ve already sold out of the first batch of tickets. The support has been totally overwhelming but we appreciate it to the highest level. Old fans can expect the same high energy show we brought to the stage time and time again in our previous bands but taken up a gear and there may be a few surprises in there also! As for venues we’d love to play; we’ve always said from the start if we could get onto the academy circuit as a support slot then we’d be happy. But obviously the dream has to be Slane Castle or Maddison Square Garden and of course Hampden and Wembley… one day!

INTRODUCING - RUBIAN
Introducing Rubian, a female fronted 4-piece indie rock band consisting of members Cheryl Risk (lead vocals), Niall McNaughtan (guitar), Tom McBroom (bass) and Ryan Smith (drums). We spoke to the band at their rehearsal studio;
PLEASE GIVE US A BIO ON THE BAND AND HOW YOU GOT TOGETHER Cheryl: “I had been a solo artist prior to getting involved with the boys. Unfortunately my band who I had worked with broke away and I was left with no solid musicians. One day when I was feeling a little under the weather, I decided to seek out a band in need of a singer. Straight away I found the boys searching for a front man. Me being me I decided to ignore the fact I was not a boy and chance my arm! Luckily, they accepted me into their musical family and the rest is history“
Tom: "Niall, Ryan and I had been floating around after the demise of our last band looking for a new frontman, posting on forums etc. We had a couple of potential candidates but nothing really clicked for us. Out of the blue I received a message on Facebook from Cheryl saying she had spotted our messages on the forums and although we had been searching for a Front-man had we considered a Front-woman? In all honesty we hadn't, we had always been a lads band and became accustomed to that environment. The idea of letting a female infiltrate our camp was a little unnerving, scary even! Thankfully Cheryl persisted and we arranged to meet up at our studio in Glasgow and show her around, unfortunately we couldn't get access to the building and had to move the meet n greet to McD's much to Cheryl's horror I'm sure...turned out she's a vegetarian! Undeterred by these hot blooded, meat eating males we found we had much in common especially where it mattered, making music we soon realised that the combination of Cheryl's songwriting and her voice seemed to suit the sound of the music we were creating. After months of writing and rehearsals we feel we have got a great batch of songs that people will enjoy and cant wait to get out there and play some live shows.”
WHERE DID THE NAME RUBIAN ORIGINATE? Tom: “We probably spent longer than we should have on finding a name, there were some belters thrown into the mix! We settled on Rubian after a very strange conversation about names with drummer Ryan Smith, who had been taking some slagging for his extremely popular surname. He informed us of his lineage having mostly regular first names like John, George etc, but his Gran was called Rubien(with and E!). Everyone was laughing at the randomness of the conversation but the name stuck and after googling any hidden and potentially awkward meanings it turned out that Rubian was part of some sort of root, an area in France and the name of a fish curry...Sorted, Rubian was born.”
WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES? Cheryl: “My musical influences are artists such as Paolo Nuttini, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé and Mumford and Sons. I like a huge range of music and love to cross genres depending on my mood.“ Niall: “Guitarists such as John Mayer, John Frusciante. Bands I would say Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Coldplay all influenced me as well as others.” Tom: “Noel Gallagher, Edward Sharpe & TMZ, BRMC for me” Ryan: ”I'd say The Who & The Police have always been my big two but more recently Kasabian have been a big influence on my style.”
WHAT CURRENT MUSIC ARE YOU GUYS LISTENING TO? Cheryl: “I am finding myself listening to a lot of Rag n Bone Man, Lorde and Ed Sheeran just now.” Tom: “Peace, Shovels & Rope, Bad Sounds & Jose Gonzales at the moment, you need a bit of "Peace" in your life these days” Niall: “The Drums, Royal Blood, Lany, Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire” Ryan: “The Who, The Police and Kasabian, enough said!”
DO YOU HAVE ANY GIGS COMING UP AND WHAT VENUE WOULD YOU LOVE TO PLAY? Tom: “We are doing an acoustic thing at Glasgow's Citizen M Hotel (30th June) and supporting Little Triggers at The Record Factory also in Glasgow (28th July). I've always wanted to play a packed gig at The Barrowlands, there's nothing like that venue when its bouncing!” Cheryl: “Having played the Old Fruit Market as a part of the Big Rock and Roll Swindle, I would love to play this venue again with a huge band backing us and a full set.”
Singer - Cheryl Risk
Guitarist - Niall McNaughtan
Bass - Tom McBroom
