I’d always had a strange feeling about my apartment, like I was never really alone when I was there. It was like there was always someone watching me, always a presence hovering right over my shoulder. It bothered me a lot at first, to the point where I had considered moving out. But after I while, I guess I got used to it.

And then one night, when I was in bed, I felt the presence as though it were right beside me. I could feel it breathing. I could see where the sheets dipped and gently rustled as if someone was climbing into the bed with me. My heart was pounding in my chest, but I managed to whisper out into the darkness, “Who’s there?”

And then he made himself visible to me. 

His name was Jack. He had lived in the apartment many years ago. He was the same age as me, twenty-four, when he died. He told me he had never shown himself to anyone else before. He apologized if he had frightened me.

But the odd thing was, I wasn’t frightened. I was talking to a ghost in my bed in the middle of the night, but I wasn’t frightened. We stayed up talking for hours. I learned everything about him, about how he had died, about what it was like to be a ghost. As we laid there on the bed, I could feel his wispy body next to mine. I always thought that ghosts were cold, but he felt so lovely and warm. I fell asleep with him next to me, and when I woke up, he was gone.

The next day, I couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened. I tried to tell myself that it was all a dream, but I knew that it wasn’t. What I had felt with Jack was real.

That afternoon, there was a knock at the door. When I opened it, there was a stranger standing in the hallway. He was tall, with blonde hair and bit of scruff on his face, and he had these beautiful eyes that I recognized right away. It was Jack. He told me he had found a way to possess this stranger, but he didn’t know how long it would last. He just wanted to be with me, to feel what it was like to be alive again.

I kissed him and brought him into the apartment. We spent the entire afternoon together. Fucking. Kissing. Holding each other. As it started getting dark, I could tell that he was losing control of the stranger’s body. He seemed to be drifting in and out of this world and the next. I didn’t want him to go.

“I’ll be back,” he assured me, “Maybe in a different body next time, and a different body the time after that. But no matter what body I’m in, I will always come back to you.“
