Abortion ban in Poland

After several years of living abroad, I came back to Poland. I wanted to live close to my family and friends. 

What I’ll get is an absolute ban on abortion. Because our right-wing  government gave first green light to a bill proposed by ultra-conservative NGOs and parties.

The project in question would ban abortions even in situations where 

the fetus has no chance of survival,

the pregnancy is a result of rape 

or the life of a woman is in danger. 

It also included jail time for pregnancy termination as well as “endangering pregnancy” for up to 2 years, for both pregnant women and a doctor.

Also, up to 2 years of jail time for an abortion conducted abroad, where it’s legal (Germany, Czechia)  

This may even lead to women ages 18-40 being denied leaving the country, on basis of “wanting to get an abortion”. This is of course far-fetched, but hey, if we’d be persecuted for an abortion there, why not ban going there whatsoever, in case dastardly deeds were on our minds?

Also, this bill makes prenatal diagnosis virtually pointless, since doctors could not do an abortion, if they discover some genetic fetal defect that will make it’s life short and miserable.

If the fetus has a genetic defect such as anencephaly (no developed brain), under this bill the woman needs to carry it to full term anyway. This happened not long ago in Poland. After the diagnosis the woman was forced to carry it to full term, knowing through all those months that she’ll give birth to a stillborn baby.

This is bad. This is really, really bad. This is fundamentalism at its worst.
