NOLAN.
With some of the most well-known and respected movies in cinema history, Christopher Nolan embodies the phrase “less is more”. Only having written 15 films in his entire career, Nolan is world renowned for his psychologically exerting films and ground breaking screenplays.
Alongside many films of Director Christopher Nolan is mastermind composer, Hans Zimmer. I’m a huge fan of the ‘dynamic duo’, as I like to call them, and will attach my song recommendations from each film’s soundtrack that Zimmer composed.
Hold on to your hats (lol @theprestige), because Nolan plans to ‘wow’ us all over again with his upcoming war film: Dunkirk. Based on true events, Dunkirk features many faces familiar in Nolan’s previous movies, such as veterans Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy. Yet, newcomers like One Direction fan-favorite Harry Styles and Oscar winner Mark Rylance join the cast to make the new Nolan movie better than what we’re expecting. As excited as we are for the Oscar nominated director and screenwriter’s new film, his previous works will stick with us no matter how hard we try to digest what the heck happened at the end of Interstellar. So that takes us right to our next Nolan movie, the survival space feature starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain: INTERSTELLAR.
One thing’s for certain: I will never look at an ocean wave the same way again. Nothing stops this father from getting back to his kids, but, with the world on the brink of exodus, Cooper (McConaughey) may not make it back in time. The film also portrays a star studded cast with Oscar winners Casey Affleck and Anne Hathaway as well as two time Oscar nominated Jessica Chastain. Yet, we can’t forget Michael Caine’s devious plans for the future of Earth and, heartbreakingly, Matt Damon’s betrayal as Dr. Mann. Yet, everything from droids TARS and CASE to Hans Zimmer’s genius soundtrack, Interstellar is a film that could possibly be relevant in the future…good thing we know five-dimensional beings exist to lead us through black holes. Hey, at least Matthew McConaughey looks damn good for 156 years old. (Song Recommendations: No Time for Caution, Cornfield Chase)
Speaking of Hathaway and Zimmer, let’s dive into Nolan’s epic Batman Trilogy, primarily The Dark Knight. Perhaps in my top 3 favorite films of all time, The Dark Knight is nothing short of a cinematic miracle. With Christian Bale dawning the mask of the Caped Crusader, 2008′s movie of the year brought with it suspense, drama, humor, terror, and allowed audiences to grasp the mind of a maniacal clown. Heath Ledger, may he rest in peace, brought the movie home–winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar after his death, his family stepping in for him. My personal favorite out of the trilogy, The Dark Knight features a masterfully done soundtrack, dark and disturbingly good, by legend Hans Zimmer; I’ve attached, at the bottom of the article, a link of Zimmer and Nolan composing the Joker’s theme: Why So Serious?. A captivating script, unmatched cast -again filled with many familiar actors from other Nolan films- and a truly gripping villain, The Dark Knight will be revered on screen for many films to come. (Song Recommendations: Why So Serious?, Agent of Chaos)
Now, if we’re talking mind-blown then we’re obviously talking about Inception. Arguably one of the most complicated, gripping movies of the generation, Inception (and its ending) had me jumping out of my chair and screaming at my poor TV. Who knew the simple plot of a man wanting to return to his children would turn into a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream? Well, thank you, Mr. Nolan, for making it so much more than a trivial plot line as this A-list filled film won 4 Academy Awards and is featured in the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die book by Steven Schneider. But, the ending?! I’m still trying to get over it. My opinion: It was not a dream, but that may just be the ‘happy-ending’ me talking. With the best tag team around, the gurus of inception, those who are trained to infiltrate another’s dreams, fight with death, danger, and projections, the subconscious of the dreamer. The leader, Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), right-hand man, Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), prodigy, Ariadne (Ellen Page), crime boss, Saito (Ken Watanabe), and hunk, Eames (Tom Hardy), dive into the many layers of millionaire Robert Fischer’s (Cillian Murphy) mind, yet, risk being lost in limbo due to Cobb’s haunting, dead wife, Mal, (Marion Cotillard) plaguing the mission. One thing’s for sure, whenever watching Inception, keep your thoughts close and your projections closer. (Song Recommendations: Time, Dream Is Collapsing)
Although I could spend the entire night admiring Christopher Nolan’s work, I’d like to end the article with a film filled with magic, mayhem, and evil twins: The Prestige. By now a veteran of Nolan movies, Christian Bale plays, not one, but two characters, the Borden twins, in this 2006 movie, depicting a pair of frenemy magicians competing for the #1 slot in creating illusions. His competition? Hugh Jackman’s Robert Angier and the race to see who performs “The Transporting Man” better, but soon this turns into a scientific advancement so huge that Nikola Tesla even makes an appearance, in this case we mean the late, great David Bowie who played Tesla in The Prestige. Yes, cloning. But how far will these two rising magicians go to secure the leading spot? Let’s just say pretty far as it results in the demise of many friends, family, and a revolutionary trick’s exposure, breaking a magician’s primary rule: never to reveal their secrets. Although Hans Zimmer did not compose the music for this film, it still includes a great soundtrack and a feature written and played by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. (Song Recommendations: Analyse by Thom Yorke)
This is the first, and definitely not the last, article about esteemed Director and Screenwriter Christopher Nolan. His films continue to move generations of audiences, all top rated on IMDB and other film sites, and a follow-up of his newest film, Dunkirk, should be soon to follow its release!

89th Annual Oscar Nominations
For those of you (*ahem*…me) who literally wait all year for the Monday morning suspense of the Academy’s best deemed movies, actors, and actresses to drop–the time has come. Monday, January 23rd, you best believe I was excitedly reading off the nominees to my sister in our routine 6 a.m. car ride. Of course, no one else in my family really shared in our exhilaration when we arrived back home later that evening, raving about our personal picks at the dinner table.
Now I’m going to go ahead and say it, but I’m super biased about the success of one film in particular this year: HACKSAW RIDGE. I’ve seen it twice already, and if it were still in theaters, that number would have increased to 3 long ago. I’ve already touched on the message this movie delivers and how clearly I am fascinated by it in a previous post (see ‘Mel Gibson At It Again’). Andrew Garfield, up for this year's Best Actor Oscar, gives a gripping performance worthy of tears alongside Best Director nominee Mel Gibson (previously won Best Director and Lead Actor in Braveheart). All in all, I don’t believe that it couldn’t be a competitive contender for this years Oscar. In my opinion, this movie of the undermined American hero is a film everyone should see. p>
ARRIVAL: Next up on the chopping block, what seems to be the greatest sci-fi film of 2016. Who knew aliens, spaceships, and global war would be nominated for Best Picture of the year? Well, Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner put on quite the show, along with Denis Villenueve, the man behind the movie and also a candidate for this year’s Best Director. Who knows, this film could be preparing us for a near possible future, or make our nights by winning a few of its 8 Oscar nominations.
MOONLIGHT: This heart-wrenching tale of a young African American growing in the tough hoods of Miami follows the path of self development for protagonist Juan, portrayed by Lead Actor nominee, Mahersala Ali. Also a candidate for Best Director, Barry Jenkins has put together a hit that has been nominated for 8 Oscars in total. Its cast, including Naomie Harris, Best Supporting Actress nominee, and message as a whole has fans giving it a 10/10.
LA LA LAND: Now to everyone's favorite film of the year. The blockbuster that's been putting the rest of Hollywood to shame: Damien Chazelle's musical, comedy, drama La La Land starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. It also has a record breaking number of Oscar nominations this year: 14! Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenplay...you name it! La La Land has got it. Adding to its overall amazement, La La Land has been nominated TWICE in ONE genre: Best Original Song for ‘Auditions’ and ‘City of Stars’. This film in general is going to be an EPIC contender for any Oscar genre this year....
HELL OR HIGH WATER: This year's top grossing indie film, Hell or High Water, is the modern Texas cowboy story...except brothers Toby (Chris Pine) and Tanner (Ben Foster) bring the romanticized image of the 'West' to modern day times and the injustice of reality along with it. Don't underestimate Taylor Sheridan's directing, however, as he and his film have been nominated for Best Director and Best Motion Picture. Jeff Bridges also has returned to the Oscar buzz since his True Grit times, this year being nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and the film itself scoring a few more nominations for editing and screenplay.
LION: Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel have both nabbed Best Supporting Role nominations for their incredible work in Lion. The Best Motion Picture contender has brought a lot to the Oscar table with its 6 nominations. It tells the inspiring young story of a lost Indian boy, over 1000 miles from home, who is taken in by an Australian couple. Yet, as he matures into a young man, he sets out to find his estranged family. With its diverse ensemble and story, Lion has been nominated for its cinematography and editing as well as others.
MANCHESTER BY THE SEA: Its top billed cast all nominated for Oscars. Director Kenneth Lonergan also competing for this year's Best Director award. A drama that hit blockbuster status. What more could be asked for in a Best Motion Picture nominee? Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, and the young Lucas Hedges all bring this family drama to the big screen and to a special place in our hearts, and let’s not forget all of them nabbing nominations in Best Lead Actor, Lead Actress, and Supporting Actor for their work. This film has propelled lead actor Casey Affleck to Ben Affleck status as he has already won the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Lee Chandler in Manchester by the Sea, and quite possibly his first Oscar win.
HIDDEN FIGURES: This nominee for Best Picture tells the behind-the-scene story of the female, African American NASA "computers" who helped keep John Glenn in orbit during the "Star Wars". The powerful, lead trio, Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae, bring the sass and the feminism to the male-dominated atmosphere of the 1960s space program. Oscar veteran Kevin Costner also helps launch these three womens' success-and successful they were as Octavia Spencer has scored herself a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Hey, this SAG Best Picture Award winner could be promoted to Oscar winner.
FENCES: Last, but certainly not least, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis'emotional collaboration: Fences. The toil of running a family during the discriminatory era of the 1950s scored lead actor, Washington, his 7th Oscar nomination and, quite possibly, his 3rd win (previously winning for Glory, a personal favorite, and Training Day). Davis herself also is being eyed for this year’s Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, making it extremely tough for the rest of the nominees in all categories due to the fact that Washington and Davis have both scored SAG Awards for their acting in this film. Yet, it’s not merely the cast that put Fences at the top of box offices, but the movie has also won itself a Best Picture nomination.
So! This year’s runners are up for quite the competition as the Oscar pool is flooding with talent, each film standing out in its own immaculate way. The 89th Annual Academy Awards airs February 26th, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, and will feature an A-list studded audience as well as film history in the making. Please comment your opinions of this year's Oscar nominees and your favorites to win! 🎥

REST IN PEACE CARRIE FISCHER
I’d like to dedicate this post to the one and only, beloved Carrie Fischer, who died early this morning after suffering a major heart attack last Friday. My thoughts are with her family and I thought I’d take this opportunity to finally publish my first (and definitely not last) STAR WARS post! *cue theme music*
and be careful …. spoilers!!
In this galaxy far, far away, which, to be honest, I have a geographical interest to know where this jumble of stars is, we have action, we have romance, we have suspense, and even some major family tension. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is thrust into the world of the rebel army, fighting against the brute strength and power that makes up the Empire. Alongside his rag-tag group of comrades, including best friend and sidekick Han Solo (Harrison Ford), long lost twin and princess of Alderann, Leia, (Carrie Fischer😢), a Wookie (Peter Mayhew), and a pair of loyal drones, C3-PO (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2, they may have what it takes to take down the empire and the evil Darth Vader (David Prowse). The last of the Jedi, Luke hones his powers and utilizes the Force, which is kind of difficult to comprehend at first, to defeat his father, Darth Vader (!!!).
Fun Fact #1: Darth Vader in German means Dark Father. So the pretty much that means the Germans were ahead of the game on this one.
This franchise has been so successful and has such a monstrous fanbase, it would’ve been sad if they didn’t make more movies…oh wait! They did! Following the first 3 movies, Star Wars: The New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and The Return of the Jedi (1983), director George Lucas made a comeback with the second Star Wars installment, the Phantom Menace (1999), the Attack of the Clones (2002), and The Revenge of the Sith (2005). Big names such as Ewan Mcgregor, Liam Neeson, and Natalie Portman helped the second series soar in the box offices and in the hearts of Star Wars fans as well.
And just when you thought that wasn’t enough…Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters last Christmas, telling the new story of a young woman, Rey (Daisy Ridley), who is joined by a rogue storm trooper (John Boyega) and rebel pilot, Poe (Oscar Issac), to fight against a new threat: Han Solo and Princess Leia’s wayward, dark-side son, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). The search for Luke Skywalker is on in this most recent addition, who makes an appearance in the film...the last 45 seconds of the film. Trust me, I was sad too. But don’t let it bring you too down because Star Wars: Rogue One, starring Felicity Jones, has livened up the franchise’s flame once more! Set decades before the New Hope, Jyn Erso (Jones) battles against all odds to destroy the Death Star, plans for its construction, and the massive devastation it will soon unleash. Get ready, because that’s not it for this Star Wars reboot, 2 more films are to follow Rogue One and Force Awakens in their respective timelines.
Also, exciting news to come in 2018! The new Han Solo solo (lol) film is coming out, featuring Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures, Hail, Caesar!) as the young Millenium Falcon pilot and his misadventures.
Fun Fact #2: Daniel Craig (Skyfall, The Defiance) makes a cameo as a storm trooper in the Force Awakens. If you listen close enough, you can hear him bark orders to a squadron before he gets taken out by Rey and the gang.
So that wraps up this Star Wars saga post. Rogue One is in theaters now and I've been hearing some raving reviews!
I do not own any of the above material.

MEL GIBSON AT IT AGAIN:
Helllooooooo to my personal favorite blockbuster of the year: Hacksaw Ridge. Hacksaw Ridge tells the remarkable true story of a young WW2 medic, Desmond T. Doss, who courageously enters the line of fire, completely unarmed. Andrew Garfield, familiar on the screens in the latest Spider-Man installment, starred in this biopic with strength, showing us just how deep the tendrils of faith go. Garfield was backed up by major stars such as Hugo Weaving (The Matrix), Sam Worthington (Avatar), and the hilarious Mr. Vince Vaughn (The Internship). In Gibson’s latest hit, we follow Doss through his childhood, consisting of an abusive father (Hugo Weaving), love life and future wife (Teresa Palmer), and the intense discrimination he received as a result of conscientiously objecting a weapon. The truly awing aspect of Doss’ story is the fact that he saved almost 100 lives, Japanese and American alike, without firing a single bullet. Mel Gibson perfectly encompasses the greatness of Desmond’s deeds in his directing and cinematography, he even remarks in an interview that, if Doss was alive today, he would want him to be president. Hacksaw Ridge has to be one of my personal favorites of the year, those at the Venice Film Festival agreeing after the movie received a 9 minute and 48 second standing ovation. IMDB has also ranked Hacksaw Ridge as #91 in the greatest movies of all time–considering all the movies that have ever been released, that’s a statement. One thing that truly tied the whole film, though, was the energy and connection between all the actors, especially Vince Vaughn. A tough, proud drill sergeant, Sgt. Howell (Vaughn) whips the new batch into shape for war, but makes it exceptionally difficult for Doss, who refuses a weapon. Vaughn brought a sense of humor and brashness to an otherwise intense motion picture, a factor that added to this mastermind movie. Basically he made fun of all of the soldiers like a typical officer and had the audience laughing. And let’s not forget about Smitty, movie watchers’ favorite bully-turned-friend, who, at first disapproving of Doss’ decision, trusts and protects Desmond in the line of fire. Sam Worthington’s Captain Glover also tied the army vibes as he too comes to respect Doss’ gutsy decision. This is one movie that, if I could, would watch 5 more times in theaters. Those I watched it with were in tears by the credits, me, on the other hand, was speechless with awe and enlightenment. I recommend this movie to all, especially war movie fans. And we may, quite possibly, see Hacksaw Ridge hit the Oscar stage! Much buzz has been surrounding the film, as well as director Mel Gibson, lead actor Andrew Garfield, and supporting actor Hugo Weaving. This one is definitely for the books!

#CHICAGOLAND
The Windy City jut got stormier with all the new “Chicago” shows being added to the mix! Fans were first introduced to the series within the walls of Firehouse 51 in the NBC hit: Chicago Fire. Studded with well-known faces such as Taylor Kinney (Kelly Severide) and Jesse Spencer (Matthew Casey), the first Chicago show couldn’t be anymore addicting. Chicago Fire follows the dangerous, daily lives of the firefighters and paramedics of Chicago. The five current seasons are packed with thrilling flames and lots of smoke, but it’s a show I highly recommend for anyone. Moving onto the second installment of Chicagoland, Chicago P.D. also rallied much fame and a loyal following when it aired. Many fans already familiar with Director Dick Wolf’s Chicago Fire eagerly ate up the high-alert and suspense that made up the Chicago law enforcement. With the cast built off of talented actors, like Sophia Bush (Erin Lindsay), Jesse Lee Soffer (Jay Halstead), and Jason Beghe (Hank Voight), the second Chicago show was anything less than a success. One thing I’d like to point out is that all the shows in Chicagoland are intertwined, glimpses of the different series making constant appearances within each Chicago show. This brings us to the newest addition of Chicago, my personal favorite, Chicago Med. The Gaffney Hospital’s emergency department just about sees it all, especially with the dedicated ED doctors and nurses running the show. Each ER staff brings a new aspect to the Chicago Med table, such as Colin Donnell (Dr. Connor Rhodes), Nick Gehlfuss (Dr. Will Halstead), Torrey Devitto (Dr. Natalie Manning), Brian Tee (Dr. Ethan Choi), Yaya DaCosta (Nurse April Sexton), and more bring the trauma cases to life. Now finishing up their second season, the new series to the trilogy has just about reached Fire and P.D. status. If you’re a Grey’s Anatomy addict or just craving a new show to binge-watch, I’d be getting a HULU account started to watch the stunning new series. And, to wrap it up, Chicago Justice is in production and ready to air soon! The new series follows the State Attorney’s determined group of prosecutors cleaning up the city of Chicago. Chicagoland just keeps growing, and there’s nothing to be complaining about! If you haven’t already, dive into the depths of Chicago and the different characters and branches that make up this wonderful world. Thanks, Director Wolf!
Chicago Fire currently airing season 5 // Tuesdays on NBC
Chicago P.D. currently airing season 4 // Wednesdays on NBC
Chicago Med currently airing season 2 // Thursdays on NBC
Chicago Justice premiering season 1 on Sunday, January 15, 2017

AMERICAN WHAT’S NEXT??
Ryan Murphy is the brains behind the American [blank] Story franchises, producing season after season of episodes full of fright, suspense, horror, and biting your fingernails off. Whether it’s the constant deaths in the Los Angeles Murder House (AHSS1) or a step by step into one of the most famous crimes of all time (ACSS1), Murphy never fails to please an audience. Critics raved over the first season of American Crime Story, an in detail account of the OJ Simpson trial and one of Murphy’s latest hits, which featured David Schwimmer, John Travolta, Sarah Paulson, and various other actors to bring the infamous case to life. With only its first season out, Murphy has some work to do (and fast) so his hungry fans can finally be satisfied. Rumors of the show’s second installment has hit search engines that American Crime Story is most likely going to be a green light for season 2. Also, it has been confirmed that the new season is to be centered around the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, an exciting new plot line. Let’s switch gears for a minute here and dive into another (my personal favorite) work of Ryan Murphy’s: American Horror Story. The eccentric, avant garde, 6 seasoned masterpiece has viewers on their toes and screaming for more (literally). If you haven’t already watched the thrilling TV series, I suggest to drop everything, get to your nearest TV or computer, and enjoy the show. Before I continue, one thing I adore about Ryan Murphy’s sinister world are the characters, but the actors that play them are even more applaud worthy. Evan Peters, Cathy Bates, Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Emma Roberts, Wes Bentley, Zachary Quinto, Angela Bassett, and newest series regular, Lady Gaga, are some of the many star studded faces that hit the screens. There are also some exciting big name guest stars such as Neil Patrick Harris (AHSS4), Gabourey Sidibe (AHSS3), Adam Levine (AHSS2), Jenna Dewan Tatum (AHSS3), Matt Bomer (AHSS4), and many other familiar faces just to make the show that much more amazing. An interesting aspect of Murphy’s shows is the fact that actors reappear in different seasons of American Horror Story or take on a new persona in American Crime Story. It keeps the show exciting, interesting, and never boring how each season of the 6 in American Horror Story have the actors depict different personalities and overlap. American Horror Story’s current series, season 6, tells the tale of the lost Roanoke colony (yes!) and an interracial couple that just bought an isolated farmhouse right smack in the middle of the disappearing colonists. It also has a new element since it’s told from the point of view of interviewees on a supernatural reality show (Lily Rabe, André Holland). I especially love how, even though the seasons are connected, it doesn’t matter where you start, as long as you start watching as soon as possible. Seasons 1-6, Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, and My Roanoke Nightmare, offer a different kind of scary and creepy in each, so make sure American Horror Story has been added to your watch lists. Before I sign off, I want to also talk about Ryan Murphy’s new upcoming TV shows. Feud, his latest installment, tells the tale of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford’s legendary rivalry, eventually spilling onto the Oscar stage, which features regular American Horror and Crime Story actors such as Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, and a new big namer, Stanley Tucci. Also, Scream Queens, another big TV hit with a star studded cast, has been set for season 2 and begn airing Tuesday, Sept. 20. With an already outstanding season 1, season 2 will be portraying actors like Emma Roberts, Keke Palmer, Abigail Breslin, Jamie Lee Curtis, and (a personal favorite) John Stamos as this season’s bloodthirsty surgeon. Catch up on Ryan Murphy’s elaborate world anytime and anywhere you can because it doesn’t get better than this.
American Horror Story, Wednesdays on FX. (AHS)
Scream Queens, Tuesdays on FX.
American Crime Story Season 2, unknown at the time. (ACS)
Feud, 2017.

Quentin Tarantino: The Einstein of the Modern Age
How do we compare such avant-garde and eccentric films to anything else from modern film, or to just flat out movie history? Tarantino has a special touch that keeps you engaged, on the edge of your seat, and mesmerized by his flawless cinematography. His addition of excessive violence and gore, however, is unlike anything any director has ever done, and he even can be seen in a few cameos. My favorite role of his is in Pulp Fiction, Samuel L Jackson’s fallback when he and John Travolta are stuck in a sticky (and bloody) situation. One thing’s for sure, he knows how good his coffee is. An array of actors dotting his top headlines amaze crowds again and again as, Tarantino has even confirmed this, they play the parts in Tarantino’s very own world. Ever buy “Manzana Rojo” cigars at your local gas station? No? It’s because Tarantino made the brand up. The characters and plot lines are subtly intertwined and related as well, so next time you watch Reservoir Dogs, try to guess who Mr. Blonde is related to. :) The world wide renowned director also chooses all of his music for his scenes, each coming from his large assortment of vinyls. He handpicks each song and the finished products produce classic and popular soundtracks (I own 3 full soundtracks of his). Trust in Tarantino to fill your screen with an action packed and exciting movie night, because you won’t be disappointed!
