The Psychic Squad: Chapter Four
The shrinking valley was undoubtedly full of creatures by the time they had reached wherever Mahana was taking them. The rock touched down in front of a small wooden house and Mahana leapt off gracefully, sauntering in through the front door. Ryna figured they were at least five miles from the outer rim, and wondered what such an incredibly powerful psychic was doing out here instead of training for the military like she and the rest of her team were. Mahana’s power was incredible to say the least, but she found it difficult to get a proper read on their thoughts. Was Mahana using mental shields? Ryna wondered. She wasn’t sure whether to trust this stranger.
K and Jed dragged Dee into the house behind Mahana, and Ryna followed them closely. Mahana had set down a sheet on an old futon and they laid Dee down. “I’ll get some ice for her head.” Mahana said, and drifted off into another room.
Maybe it was pointless to distrust Mahana, Ryna thought. After all, they did save all their lives only moments prior. The rest of the team seemed to trust them well enough, K especially. The girl sighed. There really was no point in distrusting Mahana, but the mental shielding did worry her. “Hey, K.” Ryna put a hand on her friend’s shoulder. “Did you get a read on Mahana’s aura?”
The redhead nodded. “Yup. Mahana is a Starseed type psychic, from what I gathered. They glow pretty brightly too.” K paused for a moment. “What are you thinking, Ryna?”
“I’m not really sure-” She was interrupted by Mahana walking in briskly with a sack of ice and a first aid kid. They knelt beside Dee and placed the ice on her head.
“I can’t really tell where she’s injured, other than that gash on her forehead.” They said, frowning.
Ryna stepped up. “I think I can help with that.” She placed her hands over Dee and closed her eyes, going deep into her friend’s subconscious where she knew she’d find a catalogue of the likely extensive damage on her physical and mental bodies. She flicked through the contents of her mind, pushing aside irrelevant and private information, and looking instead for only what was essential to diagnose the damage. After what seemed like forever, Ryna found what she was looking for; a damaged psychic emitter. “Found it!” The girl released from her psychic trance.
“Found what?” Jed asked.
“A misaligned emitter. Dee is fine, physically speaking, but that shockwave in the valley damaged several parts of her psyche.” The team breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Mahana’s eyebrows knitted together in confusion. “Why are you guys happy about this? This seems really bad.”
“It could have been so much worse. This isn’t the first time Dee has gone into shock, we know how to fix this.” Jed said. “I’m ready any time you guys are.” He glanced between K and Ryna. They nodded and each grabbed one of Ryna's shoulders. Deep in concentration, she placed her hands on either side of Dee’s head and went back into a trance.
K and Jed closed their eyes as well, allowing their consciousness to fade out and their astral bodies to move forward towards Dee. Each psychic unfurled their wings and created a protective barrier of auric light, enveloping Dee’s psychic body in technicolor, and healing the self inflicted damage done by the shockwave. With each pulse of light, Dee grew a little stronger, and Ryna could feel the psychic emitter sliding back into place. The unconscious girl’s shallow breathing evened out at last and the team returned to their physical bodies. Mahana watched them work with fascination; they truly worked as a unit, as if they were all one in the same. It was incredible.
One by one, the team pulled out of their trance. Ryna abruptly stood and faced Mahana. “I can dress the wound on her head, no problem, but I need to know who you are, nothing held back.” She said. Ryna hadn’t met someone who actively shielded their mind since Alaina, and this troubled her.
They nodded. “Alright, that’s fair, but it’s kind of a long story.” Mahana combed their fingers through thick curly hair and sighed. They began to speak once Ryna had begun to clean off Dee’s forehead. “Around twelve years ago is when I discovered I was a psychic human along with my siblings, Jena and Koheda. We were triplets. My parents were overjoyed, claiming that we were Starseeds, children incarnated from a different galaxy. But it was only a matter of time before the PCAI (Psychic Children Accumulation Initiative) found out. They found Koheda first, he gave himself up willingly.” Mahana’s face fell in pain. “Jena bought me time to run, but… they eventually found her too. From what I understand, she was sent to a reeducation center in New Orleans.”
“God, I’m so sorry.” K said.
“I have no idea where she is now, but I received intel via some of my parents old contacts that Koheda was in a nearby compound.” They said.
Jed raised an eyebrow. “Hold up. This compound is for Earth Angel type psychics. Starseed psychics are based on the other side of Appalachia. Are you quite sure you have the correct area? Maybe your intel is bad.” He crossed his arms.
“Well, that was my initial thought as well. After all, why send me to the wrong side of the mountains? But the coordinates led me straight to this house, so I figured that there was no way this could be a coincidence.” Mahana pulled a small glowing stone out of their pocket. “I found this in the basement when I first arrived. It gives off significant psychic interference, probably enough to block any scanners in the sector. It’s likely what has kept me from being discovered for so long.”
Bells went off in Ryna’s head. “Oh my god, everything makes sense now. That’s why I couldn’t get a read on you, isn’t it? Do you mind if I take a look at it?” She asked. They nodded and handed it over. The girl held it up to the dim sunlight filtering through. The rock was a translucent quartz variety at first glance, but Ryna knew better than to accept that. The oddest thing about the stone was the fact that the color emanating from it changed from a deep purple in Mahana’s hands to a vibrant green in Ryna’s hands. “I wonder…” She began and tossed the stone to K.
A pale pink and red light began to shine as soon as K caught the stone. “It corresponds to our auras then?” She asked.
Ryna glanced over at Mahana, and was now able to clearly read their surface emotions. “That would be my best guess at this point.” Jed, who thus far had been mostly silent, spoke up. “The remaining question is where do we go from here?” He put his head in his hands. “I obviously don’t want to turn you in, Mahana, but…” he trailed off.
“But what?”
“How are we going to explain any of this without leading them straight to you, one way or another.”
“He has a point. This is pretty dangerous for you.” K said.
Mahana was contemplative for a moment. “Actually, this provides me with a perfect opportunity. I still need to get into the facility, and if I come in with you guys as a civilian in danger, it provides me with the perfect cover.”
“That’s pretty risky, going into a secure military base. What if you get caught. There’s no guarantee that any of us will be able to help you out of a tough spot once we get inside.” Jed said.
Mahana grinned and lifted up their hands to reveal two bracelets. “I can take care of myself alright.” They twisted the bracelets which formed into two bladed gauntlets. “If I get into a tight spot, I will be just fine. Now,” they smirked, “take me to your leader.”

The Psychic Squad (with the exception of Dee) all had siblings before they were recruited by the military. Mahana had siblings, but they are the only one that escaped the recruitment process and they are currently trying to find their siblings within the ranks of the military. Currently, they are all close to each other like siblings.
If your oc has siblings, do they wish they were an only child? (Or if they dont, do they wish they do?)

The Psychic Squad: Chapter Three
Kellen saw the field before her as plain as day. The confusion of this battlefield brought a strange sort of serenity to her mind, it was different from any simulation she had been in. For once, she felt connected to the area she was in, and her Spatial Empathy was working correctly. Maybe it was the history she had with this particular battlefield, or maybe it was the lack of robots, but she could pick up on every burst of energy in the valley. Which is why she paid extra close attention when she picked up on a familiar energy near Dee. Her eyes snapped over to her teammate’s position and widened in horror. “Alaina?”
She peered through the sights of her bow, confirming that the Specter was, indeed, Alaina. What was Dee doing? K wondered incredulously. She watched as Jed pulled her away from the creature time and time again before she escaped and ran towards it, arms wide open. Kellen let an arrow fly.
Alaina had dissolved into nothingness by the time Dee let out a colossal scream that shook the valley. “Shit.” K said. A sound like that was sure to rouse more powerful Specters, and even Phantoms from the lower caves. “Guys, we’d better get out of here!” She said over coms. However, as she snapped her bow into its sheath on her back, she failed to notice the person flying towards her at breakneck speed, screaming bloody murder. “Oof!” She exclaimed, as the person rammed into her, knocking them both to the ground. K shoved them off of her and jumped back several feet.
The person on the ground rolled over and stood up quickly, their hands shooting up before them in a show of camaraderie. “I’m not here to hurt you, I’m here to help.” They said.
K squinted her eyes at them. “Who are you? How do I know you’re not a Phantom here for my soul?” She asked suspiciously.
They rolled their eyes. “Oh come on- do I really look like a phantom? I know I look a little tired, but Jesus… Sorry, the name’s Mahana, and we should run. Like, now.” Mahana said, pointing down below to the caves where actual Phantoms were pouring out in droves.
“Holy shi- Yeah, let’s get out of here!” K extended a hand and aimed her grappling hook towards the other ledge. “Grab on!” Mahana took the other side of the grappling hook’s handle just in time and they swung over to the ledge, far away from Jagged Peak. “I’m Kellen, or just K, if you prefer.”
“Cool. Good to meet you, K.” Mahana said. “Your friends are in grave danger down in that valley. Unless we can get to them soon, they’re not going to make it out of there with their souls intact.”
K glanced down into the valley. Mahana was right. The amount of Specters was growing by the minute and Phantoms were leaking onto the battlefield from the caves. Jed and Ryna were circling around Dee, protecting her prone form from Specters. Seeing Alaina must have hit her harder than any of them could have anticipated. “I can get us down there pretty fast.” Mahana said. “Watch.” They pointed their palms down towards the ground, causing it to rumble, and the piece of rock they were standing on broke off from the ledge and they lurched forwards.
“Mother of god!” K exclaimed and held onto Mahana for dear life. The stranger levitated the chunk of rock straight into the battlefield and they shuddered to a halt. “Guys! Get Dee! Earth bender is here to help!”
Ryna and Jed hoisted Dee up and dragged her over to the rock. “Uhm, I’m not an earth bender. It’s telekinesis.” They said, disgruntled.
“Huh. Even better.” K said. “Let’s get out of here!”
Ryna nodded vigorously. “Yeah… let’s.” Once they were all upon the rock, Mahana lifted them up into the air and they sped out of the valley and far away from sector one of the outer rim.

The Psychic Squad: Chapter Two
Ryna picked at some dirt beneath her fingernails and yawned. What was taking them so long? Jed was pacing by the door, driving her bonkers. The constant click of his boots on the concrete itched her brain. “Can you cut that out?” She snapped. He abruptly stopped pacing and sat down beside her, promptly beginning to tap his toes nervously on the ground. “Jesus, Jed!” Ryna threw her hands in the air. “You’re wigging me out!”
Jed said nothing, but sighed, and began to silently dum his fingers on his knees. Thank god for small mercies, Ryna thought. The prospect of going near the cove again must have been getting to Jed, after all, he and Alaina were so close when she- No, she wouldn’t let herself think about it. It wouldn’t do her any good. She was tempted to look into Jed’s mind, and get a more exact read on his thoughts, but brushed off the idea. Telepathy was unwarranted at the moment. Either way, Ryna had a pretty clear idea of what was going on inside his head.
The girl’s eyebrows perked up when she sensed Dee and K’s energy moving towards them. She was surprised that Dee was actually able to convince K to do this. Their mental signatures moved closer to the door, and Ryna mentally prepared herself for Kellen’s barrage of uncontrolled emotions. This, however, never came. Kellen was surprisingly serene when they stepped out into the cool night air. “Hey team.” Dee raised a hand. “You guys set?” She asked.
Jed nodded and stood. “Yep.” Ryna said.
“What’s our plan, Jed?” Dee asked.
He cleared his throat. “We go to the cusp of the outer rim. Kellen and I will scan the area and formulate an attack strategy. This will utilise my Claircognizance and K’s Spatial Empathy. Ryna and I will start close quarters combat in sector one, Dee will run interference and disrupt the Specters’ movements with her soundwave manipulation. Kellen will, of course, attack from a distance, and alert us over coms if she senses anything.” He finished. “Any questions?”
Dee raised a hand. “Uh, no questions, but a warning. I’m not going to remind you what happened last time we failed to work as a unit near the cove. It’s something that none of us are likely to forget.” Dee picked at a seam on her yellow suit. “We should not let ourselves get separated under any circumstance. I refuse to leave any of you behind.”
The team exchanged solemn glances and nodded in agreement. None of them wanted a repeat of the Alaina disaster. Ryna prayed they wouldn’t find her there as a Specter. “Alright, then. Let’s go!” Dee said, and waved for the team to follow her, as always, eager for excitement.
Jed had always counted on his intuition to lead the way. Claircognizance never steered him wrong in the face of opposition, but there was something about the cove that deeply unsettled him. He wasn’t sure whether it was the memory of Alaina’s death, or the sheer wrongness of the quarantined zone that scrambled his thoughts. If he wasn’t trying so hard to concentrate on the task at hand, he might have cursed his foggy mind.
Kellen was scanning sector one with her Spatial Empathy, eyes squeezed shut in concentration. It was always easy to tell when a teammate was astral projecting. K’s form had a non presence in reality; her astral body was somewhere in sector one checking on the status of the specters. Suddenly her eyes snapped open and she withdrew her hand from the ground. Jed touched her shoulder, gaining the information she had gathered in astral form, his eyes flashing bright blue for a moment, formulating a strategy in his mind. “Got that, Ryna?” he asked. Ryna nodded and her eyes flashed green as she telepathically transferred the battle plans to the rest of the team.
They’d attack from the West side of sector one, clear out the toughest of the Specter guards then pick off the stragglers. Kellen would snipe down the worst of the threats from the Jagged Peak. Dee would chorale the spectors, basically performing crowd control, keeping them all within K’s sights. Ryna and Jed would tank the horde, she with her swords, nimble and quick, he with his axe, brutish and powerful.
K aimed her grappling hook at Jagged Peak and sped off through the air. When she landed at Jagged Peak, she set off a burst of energy, illuminating her astral wings to the naked eye; the signal that she was in place. Ryna, Jed, and Dee dropped down into the valley, fired off their own winged flares, and rushed the first Specters they saw.
They were terrifying, yet strangely beautiful creatures. Specters all had iridescent, silver hair, and a sickly hue. Their eyes, once filled with life, were now soulless blue without any pupil or shine; some said that the eyes were the first thing that changed when someone became a Specter, and there was no going back after that point.
Everything had been going according to plan for the first ten minutes of battle; most of the powerful Specters had been successfully eliminated and the weaker ones were dropping like flies. Ryna had just delivered a roundhouse kick to a Specter and shoved a sword into its side, scattering it into a million fractured pieces. Jed noticed that Dee had stopped choraleing specters into a point of attack and whirled around to see what the issue was.
His teammate was frozen on the battlefield, looking directly at a Specter, tears streaming down her face. Jed’s eyebrows were knotted in confusion until the saw the identity of the Specter. He almost dropped his axe when he saw Alaina’s vacant face looking back at him with an empty smile, one that made his blood run cold. He knew this wasn’t the Alaina they knew, the one he had loved. This creature was a hollow imitation, a shadow of the girl that was once so full of life. It was everything he could do to not sink to his knees in despair, but he held strong and stood his ground on the encroaching horde of lesser Specters. He moved in defense of Dee, who was still paralyzed with fear, shattering two creatures on either side of her. “What are you doing!” He pulled Dee away from Alaina’s attack.
The look on his friend’s face clenched at his heartstrings. “Alaina…” Dee whispered. He had to pull back his friend once more when the Specter swung a mace at her face.
“Snap out of it, Dee!” He shook her. “It’s not Alaina!”
“How could you say that!” She hissed at him tearfully. “We could save her!”
“No, it’s never been done! It’s impossible!” Jed’s heart rate was through the roof. “You have to let her go, Dee, she’s gone. There’s nothing in there. The real Alaina has moved on to the next life.”
“No!” Dee struggled free from her friend’s grip and ran towards Alaina. She dropped her weapons and held out her arms, ready to embrace her dead friend, but stopped cold, two yards away. An arrow had gone straight through Alaina’s chest. Dee barely had time to cry out before Alaina dissolved into a million pieces before her.

The Psychic Squad: Chapter One
Kellen cursed and dodged another blast. The last one had crippled her clip shield, and if she took another hit… then it was all over.
“You need to get out of there, Kellen!” Dee came in on coms. The panic in her voice was evident.
Breathing heavily, Kellen scanned the room for the Bot and dove behind cover. “No kidding!” The clanking metal feet created a strange echo, and she couldn't tell where it was coming from. This wasn't going well.
“Breathe, Kellen.” Jed said through coms. “Remember what we talked about?” Jed’s tone was far more relaxed than Dee’s. “You can beat this.” Kellen closed her eyes and put her palm to the floor and tried to focus on the minute movements in the space. Concentration didn't come easily to her, but she cleared her mind with great effort and allowed the room to become the only thing filling her mind.
Her head snapped up. “There.” She dove out from her cover and pounced on the Bot four meters away. They both toppled to the ground and Kellen shoved her blade into the circuits, shorting out the Bot. “Gotcha.” She heard cheering over coms.
“Nice one, K!” Ryna said. The walls on the simulation room dissolved and the rest of the team was waiting on the other side.
Kellen swaggered over and pumped her fist into the air. “I finally did it!” She collapsed her helmet and ran her hand through her hair. Dee and Ryna were grinning, Jed had an approving look on his face. “Only like, twelve difficulty levels left.” Kellen said half heartedly.
“Oh, chin up, you did good!” Ryna said. Dee piped up. “Yeah, you're finally getting the hang of your Spatial Empathy.”
Kellen sighed. “You guys are way ahead of me with your abilities though. I feel like I'll never catch up.”
Jed crossed his arms. “Don't give us that. Spatial Empathy is difficult to master, and you had a late start. For what it's worth, you're doing extremely well, considering.”
“Yeah, stop worrying so much, you'll explode.” Dee joked. “C’mon, let's go to mess hall, you've probably worked up quite the appetite.”
She chuckled. “You got that right. Let's go.” The team made their way to the mess hall, their footsteps in sync.
“Open wide, Jed!” Dee said, and threw a grape at his head. Jed narrowly dodged the grape.
He glared at her. “What was that for?” He said.
She shrugged. “I was trying to lift your spirits.
He cocked an eyebrow at her. “Lift my spirits?” He threw the grape back at her. Ryna and Kellen looked on in amusement aa the two bickered. The dynamic between Jed and Dee ranged from easy friendship to fierce bickering, but even the worst of their fights never ended their friendship. “Dee, I didn't want to do this, but you give me no choice.” He picked up a tater tot and launched it across the table, sticking it into Dee’s hair. A hush fell over the table.
Dee resembled an angry egg timer about to explode at any second. She slammed her hand down and stood, her chair falling behind her. “You. Little. Argh!”
“Oh no, not the hair.” Kellen whispered in shock.
“You, me, Sim Room, o eight hundred, tomorrow. We'll settle this.” Dee said, her eyes deadly serious.
The tension in the room was so thick, it could be cut by a knife. Jed nodded in agreement to Dee’s proposition and resumed eating. Ryna and Kellen’s jaws went slack in shock. They looked at each other and laughed.
Suddenly the entire mess hall went silent, and the sound of synchronized marching filled the air. The team looked up from their food to see General McLaine and his unit marching in. The General, as usual, had a stern expression on his face and commanded the entire room’s attention. This was not the kind of man anyone messed with. “Attention, cadets!” Everyone in the room stood in salute. “As you are aware, your final tests are coming soon, and I hope you have all been working harder than ever, because we have decided to move them up two weeks.” A chorus of confused cadets voiced their surprise and anxiety. “Enough! It is time for you to show this academy that it's efforts have not been in vain, that you have the hearts of special forces soldiers. That is all, cadets. At ease.” The General and his unit left the mess hall.
Kellen’s face drained of color. She looked down at her hands in abject terror. How on earth was she going to make it in time?
“It's going to be okay.” Dee said. “We’ll help you get your ability down. Right guys?” The others nodded.
Jed’s face was unreadable. “You'll need to put all of your focus into this, Kellen. Can you do that?” He said, even toned. Kellen nodded. “Good. Because you have no choice.”
Kellen’s eyes burned and she felt her throat constricting as she spoke. “I've lost my appetite.” She shoved her food away and all but bolted out of the mess hall.
This couldn’t be happening. No, this was all just a bad dream. She’d wake up in a moment and everything would be fine, right? She pinched herself and cursed. Nothing. Staring down at her palms, Kellen gave a long sigh. Spatial Empathy wasn’t difficult in a peaceful setting, but in the midst of chaos, she found it impossible to concentrate. She put her palm down on her desk and closed her eyes. The energetic signature of the dorm room came into her mind’s eye. It was easy to pick up on the most subtle details, and to sense each life form in the building. Kellen turned inwards towards her aura and watched the ethereal technicolored wings protruding from her back bristle and curve around her.
In this form, Kellen could see colors with exponential complexity. Astral projection had always been a talent of hers. A knock on the door roused her from her meditation. Kellen opened the door to see Dee standing there. “What are you doing here?” She asked.
“Uh, I live here.” Dee said and bristled past her roommate. She picked up her scythes, sheathing them on her belt, and handed Kellen her bow. “Come on, K, we’re going to practice.”
Kellen narrowed her eyes. “Dee, I’ve had enough of the Sim Room for one day. If I see another artificial life form, I’m going to puke.” She threw her compound bow on her bed.
The brunette rolled her eyes. “We aren’t going to the Sim Room. It might be easier for you to tune in with a real world situation.”
“What do you mean? Are you talking about-”
“Yup.” Dee’s defiant smirk made Kellen’s stomach flip. This was a bad idea.
“You’re supposed to be the smart one, Dee.” K said. “I shouldn’t even have to tell you how dangerous this is. The cove is so dangerous. There’s a reason they have it on lock down.”
“I wasn’t planning on taking us any further than the outer rim. What’s the worst that could happen?”
K glared at Dee. “I shouldn’t have to tell you that. You know what happened to Alaina.” Her tone was serious.
Dee’s smirk dropped. Alaina was a bad memory. A dark spot on the team’s past. “We shouldn’t have let her go in there alone. But we’re older and stronger now, and the rest of the team is coming. We’ll be fine, as long as we don’t go past the outer rim.”
“I don’t know…”
“It might be educational to fight some Specters. The powerful ones never leave the cove.” Dee was trying to reassure her friend.
“...Okay, but promise me you’ll be careful?”
“Of course.” Dee slung an arm around K’s shoulder. “Come on, the rest of the team is waiting.”
