oh. she hopes the shock and realisation is kept out of her eyes , but the doctor is observant. still , she tries to keep her expression open so he doesn't shut it all up in a box again. she starts to rub the back of his hand with her thumb , a quiet , soothing gesture. the doctor won't acknowledge something he doesn't want to bring up.

' so , you're telling me that you're a criminal and a thief ? ' it's supposed to come out humorous , but instead it comes out quiet. like talking too loudly would startle him back into his shell , never to come out again. ' and you dragged your granddaughter into it ? '
