My love letter for Produce 101 Season 2 (which pretty much applies to season 1 too)
So! I think everyone knows I am obsessed and I mean hardcore deep in addiction kind of obsessed with Produce 101 Season 2. And I think most people probably think it's like pretty boys who can sing and dance. Well, it's that but it's so much more. This is going to be vastly different from my "A Produce 101 review (i.e. what kind of trash I've been lately)" because this one is a love letter, not a review. I haven't watched a lot of survival shows and in fact, Produce 101 was my only one. But I can be glad it's my one and only for a lot of reasons. Oh, man. I feel like this thing will be really disorganized but heck, I feel like I need to get it out. Yes, Produce 101 is about the talent and the search for a group but it's so, so, so much more. It's about human beings and struggle. About friendship, comrade, hard work, overcoming odds, never giving up, luck, miracles, second chances, growth, finding your place, finding yourself, loving yourself, developing yourself, raising others and so much more. It's very different from other survival shows where the focus is more on talent- raw talent and how that talent is cultivated and shown through different performances and different types of concepts and songs. One of the things I really love about Produce 101 is that they really show the struggle that the trainees have been through and how some of them spent years training and training. How they cling onto the hope and dream that they have, the desperation and longing they hold. How they really want this. You can see it in their words, their actions, their tears. Produce 101 has a lot of tears and I like the way crying is portrayed- kind of inevitable and uncontrollable. People cry and people cry a lot for various reasons and I think Produce 101 did a good job in capturing all sorts of moments people cry- in frustration because of their inertia and lack of movement, crying because of disappointment/frustration/worry, crying because of relief, crying because they have been acknowledged, crying because they are overjoyed, crying because of uncertainty of the future, crying because they are tired from working so hard, crying crying crying. I think I learnt a lot from watching Produce 101 and I really, really, really like it. Hmm. I think... Produce 101 is a metaphor for life and also like a fairy tale. Lol, you might think I'm insane but let me explain. Produce 101 is like that one chance for trainees to shoot into fame and let me tell you, the fame is really insane. Especially for season 2. It is insane. It has all the classics- hard work will eventually be rewarded. If you don't give up, somehow you will achieve your dreams. But it isn't so pretty, of course. There are still injustice and unfairness. There are some people who are so, so, so talented- so brilliant that don't make it because in the end, it's only 11. Sometimes the editing and the people themselves aren't so pretty either- there is greed and desperation and tears and all. And at the end of the day, some people end up with happy endings but some people aren't so lucky. For them, Produce 101 is another failed venture, another thing that don't work out. But I like Produce 101 in that not just the end victors shine- at every stage and evaluation, people shine. And for some people, it is just but the start of their journey. That someday, one day, they'll find that happy ending for themselves. For some people, Produce 101 is that happy ending. That all the struggle, all the tears, all the endless hours training, it was for that one moment. That one moment that made everything worth it. And people like happy endings, myself included of course and it's just so, so, so sweet to see that ending for some people. Let me say that Produce 101 is pretty much an emotional roller coaster. I think most people will start off with "Who the heck are all these people, why are there so many of them" then you start to recognize faces and people you like because of whatever reasons. This season, wah. More so than the previous season, hit all the right spots and was so brilliant in terms of unpredictability and so interesting. Also because it's like 101 people, I feel like there's someone for everyone, whatever your taste is in terms of looks or voice or dance or charisma or cuteness or sexiness etc etc etc. One of my favorite parts of the show is watching people grow. In so many ways. Through skills, emotionally, mentally, etc. I have cried so many times because of that. Wah. It is so rewarding to see people develop and transform and grow into the potential they have showed or overcome the weaknesses and flaws they once had. People become something you never could have imagined, to blossom so beautifully that you're happy to witness it. I don't know. I have a lot of feels for this show and I feel like I need to sit on it a bit more but yes, this is enough for now. Ya, I just wanted to share this, hahaha. Watch it if you're interested! I want more people to talk about it to, haha. But yeah, if not it's okay. (:
