The Gnanam Foundation
Allirajah Subaskaran founded the Gnanam Foundation with his wife, Prema Subaskaran, and mother, Gnanambikai Allirajah, in 2010. The foundation is named after Allirajah Subashkaran’s mother. This article will take a closer look at the foundation and its mission to consign poverty to history, helping individuals, families and communities to achieve stability and financial independence.
The Gnanam Foundation provides vital funding for the poorest areas of the world and those in the greatest need of help. Headquartered in London, the Gnanam Foundation is a registered charity and NGO created with the mission of improving lives for people around the world on an individual, family and community-wide basis.
The Gnanam Foundation projects are based on a ‘teach a man to fish’ model that prioritises long-time stability over temporary improvements. The Gnanam Foundation achieves this by working closely with communities and helping them to gain their independence by providing medical care, shelter and safety, as well as inspiring and supporting people in developing their skills.
Education is an olive branch that enables communities to modernise, ultimately encouraging people to break the cycle of poverty. The Gnanam Foundation acutely appreciates that numeracy, literacy and skills-based learning is critical for future generations, helping to build bridges and save lives in impoverished communities and helping families that may otherwise remain trapped to escape the cyclic nature of poverty.
For those in dire need, accessing clean water and basic medical services can make all the difference in terms of preventing the atrocities that steal childhoods and devastate families. Despite a clear need for clean water and quality healthcare around the world today, it is sadly the case that the number of people globally missing out on these basic amenities is actually growing, with adults and children in countries all over the world missing out on medication that not only saves lives but transforms whole communities.
A home is much more than merely a roof over a family’s head, providing shelter from the unrelenting elements. Rather, the Gnanam Foundation appreciates that the home provides a place of emotional and physical safety. The Gnanam Foundation focusses on establishing local frameworks to ensure safe communities, providing support to enable those communities to maintain themselves while inspiring pride and the prospect of a brighter future.
In 2016, the Gnanam Foundation was recognised with the title Greatest Humanitarian Organisation of the World at the Global Officials of Dignity Awards, which were hosted by We Care for Humanity.
The announcement was made by Princess Maria Amor, We Care for Humanity’s president and founder. Speaking at the 2016 Global Officials of Dignity Awards as the honourees were unveiled, the Princess explained that the Global Officials of Dignity Awards Committee was amazed by the amount of humanitarianism that the Gnanam Foundation had accomplished over the years, pointing out that its works were evident everywhere, especially in the livelihood programmes provided to unfortunate families and women.
Her Highness acknowledged that under the leadership of Mr Subaskaran the Gnanam Foundation had all the qualities of the Greatest Humanitarian Organisation, highlighting his business acumen and philanthropic spirit to bring the foundation ahead of the game. In addition, Princess Maria Amor also paid testament to the heart of Allirajah Subaskaran’s mother and co-founder, Gnanambikai Allirajah, adding that the world had ‘a great ally in helping humanity’ in Mrs Allirajah.
When the American President John F. Kennedy was sworn into office in January 1961, he stood before the crowd at his inauguration, highlighting in his speech the power of man to ‘abolish all forms of human poverty’. The Gnanam Foundation was launched with this sentiment first and foremost, one that has been echoed by thought leaders and activists for decades since, from globally renowned musicians like Bono to Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa.
Headquartered in London with offices in the Sri Lankan capital, Columbo, the Gnanam Foundation was launched to take steps towards realising this responsibility, declaring that the time is up on poverty, starting today. Allirajah Subaskaran, his wife Prema Subaskaran and his mother Gnanambikai Allirajah launched the foundation with the mission of improving lives around the world by helping communities to achieve independence for themselves. The Gnanam Foundation facilitates this by providing shelter, safety and medical skills, as well as an opportunity for local people to develop their skills, helping them to improve their household income and with it their quality of life.
In addition to the Gnanam Foundation’s focus on improving healthcare, education, livelihoods and living conditions, the charity also responds to emergency appeals as and when they arise. The Gnanam Foundation currently has a presence in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Philippines, Romania, Sudan and Tanzania. Allirajah Subaskaran, Prema Subaskaran, Gnanambikai Allirajah and the Lyca Group family are committed to growing the Gnanam Foundation in the coming years, deepening its global impact and providing help wherever it is needed.

What Is an MVNO?
Allirajah Subaskaran is the founder of Lyca Mobile, the largest international mobile virtual network operator or ‘MVNO’ globally. Allirajah Subashkaran continues to serve as group chairman today, pioneering not just the telecommunications sector but various other industries too, serving more than 16 million customers around the world.
This article will provide an overview of what an MVNO is, exploring the benefits they present to customers compared with mobile network operators and the types of products and services they offer.
A mobile virtual network operator is a reseller of wireless communications services. MVNOs lease wireless capacity from mobile network operators (MNOs) at wholesale prices, reselling it to consumers under their own brand, often at significantly reduced retail prices.
MNOs like T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless opt to sell capacity to MVNOs as their networks boast extra capacity that would otherwise remain unused. Instead of taking a loss, MNOs opt to make a small profit by selling capacity to MVNOs in bulk at wholesale prices.
Since MVNOs incur little of the cost associated with operating a mobile network, they can afford to mark down their prices considerably, relieved of the need to pay for radio frequency licences or build and maintain complex infrastructure as is the case with MNOs. Since MVNOs have much lower overheads, they have greater capacity to spend on marketing, increasing their chances of selling minutes to consumers.
MVNOs generally offer prepaid wireless plans on a subscription basis. Customer service and sales may be handled by the MVNO directly or by another entity known as a mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE) that specialises in administering and marketing mobile services.
From the consumer’s perspective, MVNOs present a variety of incentives, chief amongst them competitively priced offerings without compromising on service. MVNOs can also provide consumers with a more personalised service than MNOs, which tend to concentrate on providing a more generic service capable of meeting the general needs of the masses. By segmenting the market, offerings can be tailored to the individual needs of customers, such as providing better rates for customers who make international calls. This capability enables MVNOs to not only present unique value propositions but also differentiate themselves from market competitors. In addition, MVNOs are generally better equipped to provide an enhanced customer experience, as they are focused first and foremost on providing a service rather than being bogged down by the cost and responsibility involved in building and maintaining a mobile network.
An integral component in the success of any MVNO is its ability to be adaptable and agile. As industry opportunities change and the mobile market evolves, so too must the MVNO. The MNO market has been somewhat sluggish in adapting its business model, creating significant opportunities for forward-looking MVNOs capable of evolving rapidly and capitalising on market opportunities.
MVNOs provide customers with essentially the same services as MNOs with no discernible difference to consumers in terms of making phone calls, getting online and connecting to the network. It is only when looking beyond the basics of getting online that distinguishing factors can be found.
MNOs tend to offer a host of extras added onto their mobile deals, for example tech and devices, and subscriptions to streaming services. MVNOs have their own advantages too, however, chief among them the ability to offer extremely competitive mobile deals, as they are not burdened by the operational costs and responsibilities involved in building and maintaining a mobile network. Along with low-cost data deals, many offer extremely enticing deals on new handsets and mobile devices.
Rather than offering handsets, some MVNOs focus on providing tempting SIM-only deals, providing those who already own a mobile phone with an affordable data and calls package. Since the quality of coverage is the same for MVNO customers as it is for MNO customers, MVNOs present very attractive cost-saving potential without compromising the customer experience.
