While beliefs and psychology can help to explain certain specific phenomena, it's pretty foolish to resort to them when there are much more obvious and coherent material explanations. Like I've seen some people describe the tendency for Fascists and their sympathisers to rhetorically and legally defend Fascist violence, going so far to treat injured aggressors as victims, as stemming from some moral tendency towards "Might is Right" that leads to them side with the perceived "Victor".

But given how much these very same Fascists react when their supporters are attacked (or even just lose a fight they started), they clearly have little attachment to the abstract idea of supporting the "Strong" and "Active" over "Weak" and "Passive". Clearly (like the conscious partisans of any other ideology) Fascists like it when violence is inflicted on their political enemies and don't like it when violence is in turn inflicted by their political enemies. They're perfectly happy to ridicule the whole "attacker who calls themselves the victim when their target fights back" when it's an anti-fascist who acts like that. In this case, as in many many others, their attitude is directly based on grounded social relations rather than detached moral ideas. It's foolish to explain ultimately logical political stances in terms of abstract value systems

I think the hardest part about addressing child abuse is getting people to acknowledge, not just intellectually but actually responding accordingly, is that the biggest threat to children, the biggest risk of abuse, is family and parents.

it is of course most often parents who are crowing about needing to protect children (often against far smaller threats than family), and pointing out that they are, statistically, the biggest threat to their kids is not gonna be received well.

Hi if you ever find yourself in a relationship saying anything along the lines of "well I can't leave cause I would never be able to find something better than this because I'm trans/fat/aging/antisocial/unlucky" I beg of you to run. Please. You can find and build better but in order to do that you have to take the first step out the door. You do not have to endure abuse, mistreatment, or just plain incompatibility for the sake of a fraction of happiness. You don't.
