Zeb was always the one to bring that happiness out in Allen. Zebediah and Ellie and Dinah, the Walkers and their wonderful sense of selfless love--people. Just ordinary people who had the extraordinary gifts of joy and understanding Allen needed to feel less discouraged about the world. Zebediah was Allen's guiding light, his grounding force, and his one true--well. Love went without saying, now, didn't it?
"Mine t-too," Allen replied softly, squeezing Zebediah's marred, tough hand with a much more delicate one. "It a-always made me feel like I c-could accomplish anything. O-overcome s-so many obstacles." He said nothing of his own mother--who distantly patted Allen when he'd first shown her the book, and glided on her way. She'd never been one to sit by his bedside and read, no--he did that on his own. And she never tended her own garden, so it hardly mattered where Allen played in search of the secret one and only--till he wound up in the woods, of course.
Feeling relief from the shared warmth of Zebediah nestling against him, Allen shrugged his bony shoulder softly under Zeb's generous touches, shifting closer to his lover--as if he could attach to him permanently. Reminded of the myth of two people finding their respective other halves; after Zeus cursed two-headed souls to split apart, Allen smiled vaguely to himself--wondering if it was time for him to find something to believe in, after all. And something told him, always, to believe in Zebediah. His other half, arguably. If he'd been asked two years ago if he believed in love, or other halves, or myths, Allen might've laughed or become very quiet--awkwardly so. As it stood now, he could stand beside his own roundabout fairytale, and dream impossible dreams.
And other romantic nonsense.
Such as running away, for example.
"Oh, I don't know," Allen replied airily, avoiding Zeb's sharp gaze with a lackadaisical shrug and a glance off into the starry skies above. "I'm s-sure others w-would be perfectly c-capable of carrying on my legacy without m-my direction. My w-work is..." He trailed off, looking back at Zeb thoughtfully. "...you think my work is important, Zebediah...?"
Fathomless, dime-bright eyes studied the freckled visage of the man he loved with new focus. As if he'd not taken into account Zeb's support in that regard--emotional; yes, loving, of course, but...it was as if he'd forgotten Zebediah paid attention to every detail. And wonder displayed itself briefly on Allen's face until the next topic of conversation--where it shifted to wary amusement and tired good humor.
"And where would we go?" Allen asked dryly, dropping his arm from Zeb's middle to play with the fingers still tangled in his own, both hands examining Zebediah's digits and knuckles and palm. "Where w-would you go, Zebediah W-Walker, if you had free r-range of your life and c-could go anywhere in the world...?"
He looked back up at last, silver eyes both severe and serene, catching the stars and hopes reflected in Zebediah's own.
"...a v-valid point, Zeb," Allen responded softly, and pressed a kiss to Zeb's palm, closing his eyes tightly shut with a muttering sigh, "but the only thing I'm s-scared to leave, truly, is y-you--I could g-go anywhere, provided you are th-there with me..."
Zeb snorted, shaking his head a little and brushing back dark curls with roughened fingers. "Y'know it's bad when even the man who reads medical journals falls asleep reading something," he commented lightly, looking into silver eyes with warm hazel green. "Do ya gotta get back to that, or can I bring distraction to your evening? What's he even given you that bored you to sleep, anyway? .. would I understand at all?"
"Excuse you," Allen retorted playfully, eyes flashing and smiling at the corners as he gazed into Zebediah’s mirthful features. "But I’ll h-have you know those medical journals a-are fascinating…! A far cry better than the a-average soap opera or dime-store novella, I might a-add…"
Indignity fading the longer Zeb gazed at him, Allen felt the resolve to return to his work weaken, eyes flickering and dropping with an accompaniment of a sigh.
"Oh, just—things I’ve already c-covered regarding the s-storm victims that I don’t feel like going over," Allen admitted sheepishly, peeping back up at his lover. "He w-wants me to evaluate his findings thus far and add my i-insight. I don’t see why we c-can’t keep our files separate, but…it’s just frustratingly slow going." Biting his lip, Allen tugged on Zeb’s hand with a pleading expression and tangle of pale fingers.
"Rescue me…?"

"Oh!" Allen's face lit up at the mention of the book, lips lifting jubilantly. "I know that one q-quite well...! I used to read it avidly m-myself. And went l-looking for the garden itself when I w-was very young..." Comfortably locking into place at Zeb's side, Allen nestled into both the gunman's hip and crook of his arm, platinum eyes at half-mast as he dwelled on gardens and mysteries unrelated to those of their own world and time. Kapoor and his crew of cronies could wait--even if the man who seemingly meant well was not as he appeared to be, Allen would happily ignore the issue for the time being. As long as it didn't bring troubles to his door.
"Mm." Allen closed his eyes and briefly buried his face in Zebediah's shoulder, allowing himself to be led along by the other man, using him for support and guidance as always. Zeb was the moral compass and the middle-man between Allen and the choices he faced every day. Ellie was an added factor, as was Dinah, and the three (well, two-point-five; as Dinah was partially his) Walkers made Allen feel stable. Less alone. And less intimidated by his own decisions. The fresh air struck his face and Allen lifted his head, peering out into the darkness.
"...worried," Allen admitted, squeezing Zeb's side with an arm around his waist. "W-worried that my work is going to c-cause more bad than g-good, and..." He looked up anxiously, heaving a sigh. "Worried of j-jeopardizing you, Adiel, and all we have." He glanced sidelong at Zeb.
"Sometimes," Allen added in hushed, cautious tones. "I w-wonder if--it'd be better. To--to uproot, abandon Westfield, and t-take all of y-you with me...I w-wonder--why do we stay...?"
Zeb snorted, shaking his head a little and brushing back dark curls with roughened fingers. "Y'know it's bad when even the man who reads medical journals falls asleep reading something," he commented lightly, looking into silver eyes with warm hazel green. "And j-just what is it the a-all-knowing boyfriend’s been reading lately?" Allen said dryly, trying to steady his deer-like legs at the sight of Zeb’s sizzling smile. "50 Shades of Gray, is it?” Eyes twinkling, Allen searched Zeb’s freckled face and bit his inner cheek with a gradual nod, gaze finally flitting to the door, then to the living room. “…you know, if I d-didn’t know better, I’d swear you’d read my mind just now,” Allen said quietly. “Seeing as I’ve had thoughts similar.”
Clearing his throat, the doctor nodded and shooed Dinah with a hand, sending her up the stairs to look after Ellie like a dog-nanny from a well-known fairytale. Fingers sliding between the spaces of Zeb’s own, Allen lifted his lips slightly and leaned against Mr. Walker’s steady shoulder.
"Outside w-would be wonderful," Allen murmured. "I’ve been cooped up f-far too long." As had all of them, but Allen didn't deign to touch on that just yet. He'd figure something out--for Ellie, for Zeb, for all of them.
Zeb snorted, shaking his head a little and brushing back dark curls with roughened fingers. He scratched behind the Shepherd's ears, leaning away when she tried to give him kisses and shaking his head with a grin. When Allen spoke up, though, he looked up, standing up straight and toeing off his boots, hanging up his leather jacket in the closet. Walking over to his doctor, his grin softened to a smile and he pressed a kiss to his cheek in greeting, hand lifting to trace the corner of his eye (and the pillow creases). "Did I wake you up? Sorry.. didn't know you'd be sleeping."
Closing his eyes with a deep sigh of contentment at the kiss to his cheek, Allen lifted a hand to hold Zebediah's arm--reassuring himself that his man was still there, sturdy and strong with a smile that seemed so sharp at times--but always turned tender when it found his flesh. As it did now, giving him the greeting he'd been hoping for, even as his face scrunched beneath the other man's lips and fingers.
"I d-didn't know I would be, either," Allen responded ruefully, silver hues fluttering back open to survey Zebediah with subtle appreciation. "Augustine h-has g-given me quite the work load." His lips lifted with a knowing flicker of mirth. "It's so riveting I must've d-dozed off."

It was still warm outside, but the nights were turning cooler, and for that Zebediah Walker was grateful. The shop's air conditioner had broken recently, and he still hadn't called anyone in to fix it, so the cool breeze did him good as he walked from his Impala to the door of the Townsend-Walker household. From inside, he could hear Dinah barking excitedly, and he grinned to himself, unlocking the door and stepping inside. "I'm home!" he called, petting the dog absentmindedly, closing the door.
Having half-dozed off on the couch beside Dinah, the fireplace lit to chase away the incoming chill of the dying Summer nights, Allen was jostled awake by fifty-odd pounds of over-excited dog leaping from the sofa with a wriggle of limbs. Groggily sitting upright and rubbing his bony wrists, the disoriented doctor grimaced tiredly, sliding long legs over the side of the couch with a stiff stretch.
Flipping a few papers over and rising to his feet with the faintest of wobbles, Allen felt a smile tug at his lips when he heard both Dinah's greeting and Zebediah's. Rubbing pillow marks out of his cheek, Allen peered around the living room's entry into the hall, watching Zebediah with fond, sleepy gray eyes.
"So you are," Allen mused quietly. "The t-typical subtle entrance, I s-see."

adielwalker-sna replied to your post: Starting to feel a little sleepy - comfortably sleepy, relaxed because she was with her papa and her puppy - Adiel nodded and smiled up at Allen, leaning up to press a kiss to his cheek and hug him around the neck once more. Starting to feel a little sleepy - comfortably sleepy, relaxed because she was with her papa and her puppy - Adiel nodded and smiled up at Allen, leaning up to press a kiss to his cheek and hug him around the neck once more. ".. I'd like that a lot, actually," she said, pulling back again, carefully maneuvering herself and her dog to the passenger's seat so that Allen could drive; buckled in and hugging her dog tight. ".. thank you, papa. I love you."
He froze, temporarily, at the declaration--silver eyes widening slightly as he felt it sink in. Deeper than his bones, down into his very soul, where the sentiment resonated most sincerely.
Swallowing softly, Allen did up his seat belt once again and glanced in the mirror at Dinah and his daughter, hands slowly dropping to the steering wheel.
"...I love you too, Adiel, d-dearest," Allen replied hoarsely--and, starting the car, kept one eye on the road and one on his child--the one he never expected to have, safe and sound once more in the back of his car, and the forefront of his heart.

Adiel leaned against her surrogate father, hugging onto Dinah and petting the dog into some form of calmness. After all, the front was crowded enough as it was just then. Shaking her head at his questions, she buried her face into warm fur once more and breathed in the familiar scent of dog and car interior and Allen's aftershave. "No - I was a bit tired 'cause I just got off work, but I haven't been feeling unwell. Just water. Out of the tap like I always gets it."
"...out of th-the tap," Allen murmured, glancing away with a furrow of his brow. It seemed odd--perhaps a mineral spike in the water? Some sort of chemical that got in? He'd have to consult the town water supplier. Or test it himself, more likely. "Well..."
Sighing faintly, Allen squeezed Ellie and shut his eyes, resting his cheek atop her head.
"...you're home now, and s-safe, that's w-what matters. But--just in c-case, you drink out of the w-water bottles in the fridge for a t-tick, alright?" He murmured lightly, touching Adiel's cheek. "...w-what do you say to going and getting some ice cream, Adiel...?" Allen smiled hopefully at her. "On me."

She huddled against him, shaking a little; always frightened whenever she disappeared to somewhere that wasn't close to home. Down a block, she could do, or on top of the house - but a whole different country? No, no, it terrified her too much, and she really hated that she couldn't seem to control her power like she should. "I'msorryIdidn'tmeanto," she said in a rush, jumping when Dinah licked her face clean before burying into the dog's fur. "I was getting something to drink and then poof!"
"Shh, nobody is a-angry at you b-but you," Allen murmured, stroking Ellie's hair with a generous, gentle hand before shifting aside to pull the young lady onto his lap. Leaning back in the seat with a sigh, Allen grimaced faintly, scrunching his face up when the dog decided to attack him with affections as well.
"Just a d-drink? Have you been f-feeling alright?" Allen inquired, squinting an eye open to peer at Ellie anxiously. "No colds, or a-anything like that?"
