Gala daydream no.1
âAlice, you there?â asked Jose through the phone. âYeah, my bad. I got stuck thinking on the dress for the gala.â Taking a deep breath, I looked away from the camera. âHey, if you want I can go help you buy it with Veronika too,â he offered. Smiling at him, I nodded. âThat would be fun.â After a few seconds just staring at each other through the videocall, a noise in his background was heard. âI think thatâs the boss, Iâll text you when Iâm done.â Hanging up on the call, I closed the laptop and placed it on the nearby table.
Pizza sounds good for lunch and a Alaskan roll for you. Smiling, I went to the kitchen taking my car keys. âWhere do you think youâre going?â asked Adrian. Turning around meeting the 6 feet 2 inch man, I replied, âFood, sir. Thatâs where Iâm going.â He smiled and pet my head. âAlright. let me know when you get there. Iâll be thinking what will desert be.â Nodding, I walked to the family room where Christian, Ermer and Veronica studied.
âPsst, guys. Pepperoni, cheese or both?â I asked. Christian turned around and whispered both. âWhat about Vero and Ermer?â Christian stood up and walked up to me. âTheyâre deep in thought. Vero is analyzing a document assigned and Ermer is reading an article the professor sent a while ago.â Nodding in understanding, I looked at them. âI know them but you?â He smiled replying, âJust watching Netflix. Got no homework for now.â Laughing a bit, he searched his pocket. âBuy me some fries please,â he whispered giving me $5. âAlright, now go, but verify your email either way,â I suggested. He dismissed me waving his hand on the air before sitting on the sofa.
Smiling, I walked to the living room before going to the garage. Casper and Han, our house dogs slept comfortably in a bed Vero and I did last summer. Taking a deep breath, I changed my shoes and went to the garage entering my humble 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. Turning the engine on, I connected my phone to the cable to charge it while I searched the classical music station in the radio. Opening the garage door, I carefully exited. Already on the street, I waited for the garage door to close before driving through the urbanization to buy pizza, the fries and my sushi.
Close by a McDonaldâs, my phone began to rung. Karla. Placing the phone on speaker mode, I replied the call while driving carefully. âhey hun! How youâve been?â
âHey gurl, sorry to be rude but Iâm driving. Please go directly to the topic, you know I donât like to drive and talk at the same time.â Hearing her giggle, she said, âItâs fine, Iâm still at work so I barely have time to talk either. So, this is the deal. You helped me and the company with the logo and the social media debut, your friends, who have worked amazing in the company and with sponsors, have won the opportunity to be part of the 1st anniversary gala that the company will do in 2 weeks.â
âItâs already close to a year? Amazing!â Smiling, I kept hearing her. âI know! Time flies by! So, the issue is that I need you to call any hotel of your liking and separate the biggest salĂłn for the activity plus verify the cost of each guest room. Iâll be making the list of guest and how many will attend the activity plus how many will stay in the hotel.â
âNoted, either way, still send me the email with all that you have including drafts. And question, donât you think 2 weeks wonât be enough time to have everything in order? Do you guys even have the money?â Hearing her chuckle, she said dominantly, âWe have enough money and our sponsors are helping us with whatever we canât pay. And, even the President agreed with me, we want you to make the call âcause your voice is powerful enough to make things clear and precise. Now,â she took a deep breath, âcan we count on you?â
Parking in the McDonaldâs. I looked around. âWill I be paid and how much time do I have to accept the deal?â Hearing a voice in the background, I stayed quiet. âZoe, yeah, President Gutierrez here. Iâm willing to give you from my own pocket $20 by the hour as you do the work and I can give you up âtill tomorrowâs 0500 hours. What do you say?â
Damn, even the President wants me to do this! And he never get in the calls so this is a great honor Zoe! Accept! Clearing my throat, I replied, âKarla, send me what I told you. Mr. Gutierrez, I accept. And you donât need to go up to $20 per hour. Iâm alright with $15.â Hearing him sigh, he said, âGlad to have you on board. As soon as I get all the info, let me know in another email how much time you worked to send you the check. Itâs an honor Miss GuzmĂĄn to have you back, even if it is for an activity.â
Turning off the engine, I took a deep breath. âPresident?â âZoe, please, call me Miguel.â
âSorry, em, Miguel.. Karla mentioned about my group, that we can participate in the gala. To avoid much costs. is it alright that we use our usual uni-â
âStop. No, you and your group will have an exclusive budget to do hair, makeup and dressing. Itâs the least I can do to you guys for all the hard work you guys have done. You call me later to tell me where you and the girls will get your outfits. Iâll contact the guys.â
âThis is so much, I donât know how to thank you Presi-. I mean, Miguel.â Feelings my eyes water, I heard his reply, âDonât worry, the payback is that I want you to be the general manager. Youâre excellent at that plus it will only be until Karla arrives. Weâre already planning it so you can enjoy the gala like everyone else. Now, I heard your car so weâll stay in touch, yes?â Nodding, I agreed. âSee you soon dear,â Miguel said before hanging up.
Damn, we got work to do, I thought to myself. âFries,â I said to myself before opening the door to get Christianâs fries.
