Hundreds of students killed in the Tlatelolco Massacre of 1968
On October 2, 1968, ten thousand students gathered in La Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco, Mexico City. College and high students organized to protest the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) repression of social movements and their $1 billion dollar investment (today’s value) in the 1968 Summer Olympics the nation was set to host in a few days.
During their march they chanted – ¡No queremos olimpiadas, queremos revolución! “We don’t want Olympics, we want revolution!”. The protest was scheduled to listen to some speeches in the square peaceful when military forces opened fire into the crowds. Approximately 300-400 students, passersby, children, and journalists fell at the hands of the Mexican state.
The repression was carried out by a special force created in anticipation of the Olympics called the Brigada Olympica, or the Olympic Brigade. The Olympic Brigade was comprised of presidential guards who, as revealed by a 2001 investigation, were ordered to shoot upon the military forces following the student action to provoke them.
It was also revealed that the U.S. sent military radios, weapons, ammunition, and riot control training material to Mexico in response to the manifestations. The CIA outlet station in Mexico City also contributed reports on the university student movement.

In honor of Janelle Monáe coming out I put together a lil graphic about bi & pan identities! This is based on my own experiences within the community as someone who uses both terms. It of course does not cover everything! Image description under the cut.

Gender clinic project
FYI before reading: Gobby is a non binary weasel whose pronouns are ‘they / them’. ‘Mrs G’ or ‘Mrs Gobby’ is a trans-weasel whose pronouns are ‘her / she’.
(For further information re ‘The Gobby Weasels’ and / or the project they belong to, see ‘have some context’ below)
Weaslets!
Oh sprunged is the springy Spring, The bunnies are a-bouncing, The guinea-pigs are pop-corning, And cubbies practise pouncing
The Gobby Weasels getting jiggy In the long lush grasses, Where they made their ‘getting jiggy’ nests, So no-one could see their arses.
Happy jiggy weasels jigging, Kissing, cuddling, all was perfect, Until Mrs G, looked at Gobby, Said, “I want us to have weaslets!”
‘SAY WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTT !!!!!! ???? !!!!! ???? !!!!!’ Gobby thought. They swallowed hard! Their tuft went limp! They started to refuse!
‘Don’t do that look!’ they thought, TOO LATE! And Gobby knew that they would lose.
Mrs Gobby’s whiskers spread right out,   Her eyes opened very wide, “Anything for you, my love.” The defeated Gobby sighed.
(But what they were really thinking was)…
Dot!
      Dot!
             Dot!
‘I’ve never been so happy, That my wife has a dick, Or that mine straps on, straps off, straps on…  And we cannot make these kits.’
So now they’re getting jiggy Twice as often as before. There’s rustling in the jiggy nests. There’s weasel sex galore.
But what Gobby’s overlooking, Is Mrs Gobby isn’t thick. And the stork from ‘adopt a weasel’ Is bringing them their kits.
So let this be a warning, Never underestimate your wife. And if you’re getting jiggy? Expect babies in your life.
Lyrics by ‘The Gobby Weasels’  aka Danny Darke :)

Have some context! :)
So, I’ve been involved (through my job) with a gender clinic for about 6 years. They’re horribly overworked. They’re the only gender clinic for people in the surrounding 5 counties, yet they still manage to do really good work.
One of their latest projects is to take trans and non-binary issues out into the community, both to places where there already are openly trans and non-binary young adults, but also to youth centres, colleges and schools, etc.
They wanted to do this using a series of stories featuring ‘non-threatening’ characters, so they came up with a community of animals of all genders, and their relationships, some of which are exclusive, some are poly (hierarchical and non-hierarchical polyamory), some are ace (asexual and / or aromantic).
By using animals and humour, they are attempting to ‘normalise’ such relationships, and those who have them, as well as addressing many of the issues faced by people in the LGBTQA+ community.
To get this project off the ground, they needed writers to bring the characters to life. I’m a writer so obviously I volunteered my services, picked out two already established weasel characters (weasels are up there amongst my favourite animals) and I’ve been writing short stories and poetry about them ever since.
There’s far too much background to give out in full, but the 2 weasels in question are known as ‘The Gobby Weasels’.
Gobby is a non binary weasel whose pronouns are ‘they / them’. Gobby’s wife is a trans-weasel whose pronouns are ‘her / she’. Her birth name was Golden’ because of her golden fur. She’s considering keeping it, because it’s not gender specific, (this is to open up the possibility of discussion around dead names and birth names). However, for the moment she’s going by ‘Mrs G’ or ‘Mrs Gobby’.
I’ve written several short stories about these weasels and their interactions within the community, and as long as the gender clinic is ok with me doing so, I may well share more (if you’re interested in reading more, please let me know in comments / notes).
Obviously, the words are changed slightly depending on the age of the group members, but you got the ‘adult version’. I hope you enjoyed it. Writing it was fun. :)
*******************
NB - If anyone wants to use this in regards to addressing gender issues in their own community or field of work, please contact me (either by message or DM). I’d love to give it to anyone who can use it in a way that benefits the LBGTQA+ community, but I’d need to check with the gender clinic first.

Scientists Warn We Are Approaching The Next Mass Extinction
http://eqonlinenews.com/2018/05/23/scientists-warn-we-are-approaching-the-next-mass-extinction/

Thousands of scientists are calling on the world to think better to preserve the conditions for the existence of the living on the planet.
More than 15 thousand scientists from 184 countries signed the document Prevention of Mankind, which describes the main threats to the existence of all living things on the planet, says the journal BioScience.
This document became the second, the first was signed 25 years ago. During this time, as scientists say, some environmental problems have only become more serious.
People and nature are moving towards collision with each other
An active group of environmentalists from the Union of Concerned Scientists and about 1,7 thousand independent scientists, including most Nobel laureates, in 1992 issued the first warning to World Scientists Warning to Humanity.
The initiator of the document, which begins with the words “People and nature are moving towards collision with each other,” became the founder of the Union and Nobel Prize winner in physics Henry Way Kendall.
Concerned about the problems of global climate change, scientists described in it the main threats that existed at that time for the environment, and steps that should be taken to reduce the negative impact of anthropogenic factors on global climate change.
Scientists predicted that a person would destroy life on Earth, because of its activities, ozone holes are formed, water and air are contaminated, forests are cut down, soil is depleted, and so on.
Preventing calls to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the use of fossil fuels, stop cutting down forests.
“If we do not take measures, many of our actions will put the future that we wish for humans, animals and plants, threaten and so change the planet that we will not be able to lead a customary life on it,” the scientists wrote in 1992.
For a quarter of a century it only got worse The new Warning contains disappointing results from the first publication 25 years ago. The authors considered nine major threats to the existence of all living things that appeared as a result of human activity.
In preparing the publication, scientists used data from national climate organizations that publish annual reports on temperature measurements and greenhouse gas emissions.

Is there any place I can volunteer to help clean up the oceans and beaches?
Absolutely! There are tons of places to get involved in beach cleanups, and we’re so glad you asked.
Tumblr media
(This otter is us rubbing our faces with glee that you want to help volunteer to clean up the ocean!)
The first place we’d steer you to is the NOAA Marine Debris Program. This NOAA office coordinates efforts to reduce marine debris, and has lots of resources for how to get involved here. They also participate in the International Coastal Cleanup, a worldwide effort to clean up our ocean and coasts.
In addition to that, many of your national marine sanctuaries coordinate or participate in efforts to reduce marine debris! Florida Keys, for example, coordinates the Goal: Clean Seas program, where local dive operators are trained and permitted to remove debris from coral reefs. You can get info about other marine debris efforts in your sanctuaries here, and if you have questions about a particular sanctuary’s work and volunteer opportunities, you can email us at [email protected] and we’ll connect you to the right person.
Depending on where you are, you might also ask around at your local environmental nonprofits – lots of local organizations are leading the charge to clean up plastic pollution.
And you don’t need to be near the ocean to help keep it clean! All of our nation’s waterways are connected. So even if you’re hundreds or even thousands of miles from the ocean, that food wrapper or plastic bag you spot blowing around in a parking lot might make its way into a local creek, and from there into a larger river, and eventually flow all the way into the ocean, where it might be eaten by a hungry fish or sea turtle. Picking up trash wherever you are can make a huge difference in keeping the ocean clean. Plus, reducing the amount of plastic you use in the first place is a great way to contribute.

Thank you for being an ocean hero!
