let me add that the nordics all vote for each other every year, Cyprus and Greece always give each other the maximum amount of points and everyone collectively ignores England, Germany and Austria (they usually end up with “Nil point” which is french and esc slang for zero points) Oh and everyone adores Italy no matter what.
There’s also some head canon material in the fact that Ireland and Sweden are currently competing for most wins (Ireland has 7 and Sweden 6)
Those Hetavision comps was how i got into hetalia lmao
I’m SO TIRED of seeing Eurovision on my dash. Because I’m a dumb stupid American that feels left out

oh my god the nostalgia. I had totally forgotten about hetavision
I just checked and yeah, they still make those comps of the characters and the songs (here’s 2021)

America is getting it’s own spin off as of next year called the American song contest but it’s airing on NBC so don’t expect much camp (It’ll be every state, D.C and 5 territories) so just hold out, you’ll be able to complain about us “not getting it” soon.
It’s likely geoblocked but here’s this years line up

Like I said, You should definitely check it out, especially this year, it’s a nice break from 2021′s chaos

Alright so, I’m half american half swedish so I have some experience explaining esc to people (so hopefully this will help)
History:
In 1956 Switzerland decided to create a song contest to unite a war torn europe, they invited like 5 other nations to compete. Each country sent one singer who would perform two songs (although now a days they only perform 1 because of how many people are competing) and then a jury would decide which country had the best songs. Spoilers, Switzerland won so they wound up hosting the contest the following year. Ever since then the contest has continued to grow and now almost all of europe is eligible to compete (exceptions include Kosovo, Liechtenstein and the vatican) Most of northern africa is also allowed to compete but the only one to ever do so is Morocco who got 1 point from Italy and ended up dead last, They haven’t been back since. In 2015 the host nation Austria, contacted Australia (It’s apparently tradition there to wake up at 5am to watch the contest every year) and invited them to be a guest contestant for the year. In 2016 Sweden made Australia an official member of the contest.
Rules:
Every nation sends a non-political (this rule is often broken) that lasts up to 3 minutes (The shortest song ever is Finland’s 2015 entry “Aina mun Pitää” which lasted 48 seconds) in any language they want (Belgium has infamously sent a few in a made up language)
Every nation also has a jury consisting of (i think) 3 people, the jury gives out up to 12 points to the 12 songs they think are the best and this accounts for 50% of the votes, the other half comes from the public.
Whoever wins has to host the contest the following year (The exception is Australia because of the time zone difference, If they win they get to pick a country to host it in)
So what is it?:
It’s the world’s largest non sporting event and it’s incredibly campy. Any genre you can think of has been in the show and whatever strange staging you just thought of when i mentioned campiness isn’t even close to what we see every year.
An icelandic chick talking to god about golden showers? Yup we have that
A bulgarian man coming out of a piano that is later set on fire? that too
Celine Dion? Yup
Abba? duh
Oh and ofc we’ve had russian grandmas singing about partying while baking bread.
That being said, not every song is comedic and that is by no means the purpose of the show, a lot of the winners are genuine serious songs and only 2 or so can be considered troll songs (they usually aren’t)
Can I watch it in the US/Canada? and if so when is it?
Yes you can and should! Peacock has it for free (after you register) with english commentary.
SVT (the swedish national broadcaster) has it for free (without registration but with swedish commentary) and it’s available worldwide
The first semi final was this tuesday but the second one takes place tomorrow on thursday (May 20th) and the grand final on saturday (may 22nd)
Feel free to ask if you have any further questions

But also as a fellow MADD haver (Madd Hatter if you will) Can we acknowledge that MADD can be/is usually brought on by trauma or anxiety?
I 100% believe that Alice always had it and that after the war broke got bad (or his TB diagnosis) Alfred, who definitely has seen Alice pace or at least daydream, started seeing it as a valid coping mechanism and developed a more controlled version
“Isn’t it a trial” is also a clear example of Alice losing control of the dream but not having the power to stop daydreaming
Okay but has anyone ever made the link between Alice By Heart and Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder? As a MADD sufferer, I can say that all the lines and lyrics completely add up to the conclusion that Alice (and also maybe Alfred) suffers from it.
Another Room In Your Head is literally about paracosms.
‘What happens if I can’t get out of Wonderland?’ What happens if I completely lose myself to this paracosm and forget the real world?
Those are just two examples. I refuse to believe that MADD isn’t represented in this show.

I found a head canon somewhere that basically said “Blaine transferred from Caramel High to Dalton” and I refuse to accept that this isn’t canon
