today it was revealed that a white woman in brownface was amita suman’s stunt double in shadow and bone.
at a time when hollywood is preaching to stop aapi hate the show has shown us, twice so far, that they don’t care about our community. by having a south asian coded character make racist remarks towards an east asian coded character they added nothing to the plot or character development- all they did was try to create a divide between our communities. this hurt more especially because zoya was never racist in the books.
they condoned putting a stuntwoman in brownface because they couldn’t be bothered to find a desi stuntwoman for amita. there are truly so many talented desi dancers and acrobats out there but shadow and bone refused to cast accurately solely because stuntwomen are supposed to show up in blurry or fast moving shots, making it “easier” to rely on brownface. this speaks volumes about how much they care about diversity.
for a show that has been praised for representation and diversity and was going to mean so much for asian viewers, shadow and bone failed to deliver time and time again, showing us that all we can count on when it comes to south asian representation in hollywood is constant disrespect and racism.
netflix and leigh bardugo along with the rest of the showrunners and writers marketed the show as being a diverse fantasy but were surrounded by a team that approved brownface should tell you all you need to know about how much they respected desi people in the first place. so many south asians were excited to finally see themselves onscreen in inej and zoya, especially as the show was praised by reviewers and writers as being diverse and accurate representation and this is what we got.
amita was so excited to play inej, a strong brown woman whose identity was not solely defined by her race and i can’t imagine how she felt watching a white woman paint herself brown so that she could perform stunts that amita had trained for as well. if anything, this proves that hollywood’s pushing of diversity on screen does nothing to help poc and representation unless that same diversity exists behind the camera.

COVID is slowly becoming a "third world" disease. While first world countries are hoarding vaccines, having doses for populations many times their size, third world countries can't get any because pharma companies want to sell to the first world countries first. Even then, first world countries will receive them first. While rich countries recover from COVID, they will forget about the pandemic while many other countries live the absolute worst moment of the pandemic without being able to vaccinate their population.

I will never stop fighting for myself. I’m firstly diagnosed with schizophrenia. I’m scared, confused, angry. I tell my friends. They sympathize and ask if there’s anything they can do. I tell them my major trigger is a certain animal. Think of a completely random animal, like a llama or crab. Something like that. I ask them not to bring this animal up in any form, because it will majorly trigger me. They laugh and joke about it. It’s now a running joke in our group. I tell my family. Each reaction is different. One tells me I can be fixed. One cries and asks me how I get through the day. One tells me it’s so hard for them to deal with it. I tell my boyfriend. He tells me he’s known all along, because I have such big mood swings. He goes quiet when I tell him I also hear voices and see things that aren’t real. Horror movies about schizophrenia loom over me. I see a girl with a ‘cute but psycho’ sweater at the state fair. Online friends push me away and tease me when I tell them. I will never stop fighting to end stigma. I am not a joke. I deserve comfort, I shouldn’t have to give it instead. All my symptoms are valid, even the scary ones. I am not a trope, a fashion statement, something to be feared or made fun of. I am creative, soft, caring, funny, and strong. I will protect myself and all my friends who are affected by schizophrenia or psychosis.

Just so we’re all clear: psychosis is a relatively common human experience. Psychosis is a state of mind that results in difficulties determining what is real and what is not. Anyone can experience psychosis given the right conditions, such as: lack of sleep, stress, sustance abuse, falling asleep/waking up, recent death of a loved one, etc.
Being psychotic is when you have a mental health condition that causes ongoing episodes of psychosis. If you hallucinate once or twice then you are not psychotic. Everyone experiences psychosis differently, you don’t have to hallucinate to be psychotic you can also experience delusions. Some psychotic people are constantly experiencing psychosis, some have random episodes, some have specific triggers, some have psychosis when experiencing negative emotions or other mental illness symptoms. Some psychotic people know when they are hallucinating/experiencing delusions, some do not, some have a mixture of believing their symptoms are real or not. Not all psychotic people are schizophrenic, psychosis can occur in lots of different mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, schizotypical personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, PTSD, depression and many more. You likely know a psychotic person, you interact with psychotic people everyday. We are not some vague other, we are your friends, your family, your classmates, your teachers, your coworkers, the cashier at the grocery store, the repairman fixing your car, the receptionist answering your phone calls. You often can’t tell someone’s psychotic by looking at them. All psychotic people deserve to be taken seriously.
Psychotic people have a very different experience than yours, in more ways than you’d think. Please listen to us and take our experiences seriously. We experience a unique type of ableism in all aspects of life. Never ever call the police on a psychotic person. Never ever get angry at someone expressing their symptoms or try to force them to see reality from your perspective. Never ever deny someone their basic autonomy due to their psychosis. We are still humans deserving of respect.
