homeward bound
every good thing gets to an end, most of the times faster than we all want it to. so does this summer. I am grateful for everything i experienced and everybody i met along the way, for the little adventures i got to get through and for all the friendships i have been offered and which i accepted happily, for all the laughters and smiles we shared, for all the hugs and good wishes. it has only been a couple of hours since i left, but i already miss being in SA.
a huge thank you to each and everyone that made my stay such a wonderful and unforgettable experience! i’ll see you all soon :-)

i hate it when this day comes. saying goodbye for real to everybody is not only a hard thing to do, it also breaks your heart every time you have to do it. there is a saying: wherever you go, you leave a piece of your heart behind. this is more than true for me right now. it feels as if i am parted in two, on the one hand i am looking forward to seeing my family and friends back home but on the other hand i really do not want to leave this place and its people for such a long time. i know that i will definitely come back again one day!

mi amigo
friends make your life so much better, sometimes they give you hard times just to have some fun, sometimes they go with you through hard times to be there as a comforting shoulder you can lean on. i found a couple of new friends on this trip which i am more than grateful for and i will miss them all terribly when i have to go home but for tonight let’s have a birthday party, one only turns 35 once in a lifetime - happy birthday robyn!

trumpet concerto
it is incredible how similar the taste of various people can be. take one of the music teachers here and myself for example: we chose the same pieces as listening examples to mark the points we want to emphasize on when talking about form, genre, elements of music and compositional devices etc. this one is just one out of many but it is always a pleasure to listen to it.

je ne veux pas travailler
it is monday and i am back to school, well sort of. in total contrast to what the title says (i don’t want to work) i am really happy to be back in classes, don’t get me wrong, this is not my real job and therefore it is easy for me to absolutely love it, we will see what i say about going back to work in two weeks time, when it becomes reality for us back home again...

la dolce vita
being driven from the berg to mhs by a very good friend, then spending a sweet sunday only doing some grocery shopping and watching tv, having food prepared for you and going to bed early, that’s what i call “la dolce vita”

an irish blessing
when people leave a place after a couple of years that they worked and lived there, there is usually some farewell-function happening. we had one last night, so we all dressed as formal as our wardrobe allowed it and drove to a very nice and fancy place where we had dinner and of course some speeches. during one of them an old irish blessing was cited, with some little adaptions to the people concerned, it fitted perfectly.

fear
after a wonderful, fun and chilled day at school and with my host pam (who is the best btw) we were celebrating her birthday with some friends at her place, having pizza and wine and loads of laughter. all of a sudden there comes the message: armed robbery, one man down, stay inside the houses. well i can promise you, the rest of the night was marked by an emotion called fear for most of us. but obviously nothing bad happened to any of the schools members, so no worries.

candy shop
it is incredible how much sweets young boys can eat. luckily there is a restriction here upon how much they are allowed to spend per tuckshop-day. helping to please all the customers was fun, maybe if i don’t want to be a teacher anymore i open my own tuckshop at an all-boys-school, friendly and happy faces thanks to sugar and sweets - definitely not healthy but extremely convenient for the soul

floret silva
coming from austria and being interested in music normally leads to knowing the carmina burana. todays concert was opened by some songs written by orff. although i have to admit that a smile could not be oppressed linked to the pronunciation of some middle high german words, the boys definitely impressed the whole audience. even more so with their african program in the second half, where they told a story about africa’s wildlife and the danger brought into the peaceful life of the animals by us humans.

not while i’m around
after an extra night at mhs, thanx for having me on such short notice btw, due to delayed flights, i finally came to drakensberg boys choir school this morning and went right into choir practice and singing lessons. those boys have such incredible voices, even a singing lesson feels like a concert, so i can’t wait to hear their actual wednesday concert tomorrow

maybe just sad
saying goodbye is never easy and especially when you start in the early morning because parts of the family have to go to work early and you only really leave (meaning the last goodbye only is then) in the middle of the afternoon. i had a wonderful time as always in joburg, thank you to all involved but i am wondering how they feel about me leaving, “are they happy or maybe just sad” (line from the song)?

the big bang
just a few km outside of johannesburg you find a place called the “cradle of humankind”, a cave system where some of the oldest remainings of all our ancestors have been found and which is still not explored completely. take a tour there, find out about the development from southern apes men to our modern day selfs. it is absolutely impressive and a nice sports exercise (first going down hundreds of stairs, then crawling through small wholes and finally climbing up another hundreds of stairs).

gift shopping is not the easiest thing to do, especially when you don’t know what to bring but can’t find anything that pleases your eye. but i had wonderful company and as we sat down for some food, we had nice latin jazz music as background sound - it happens to be david’s favorite kind of music, just perfect to make up for having to accompany me on my fruitless search

grimm opening theme
spending a relaxed day at home can be very nice as a change to the whole tourist stuff i did at cape town. and you get to watch fantasy series you never would have watched on your own because they freak you out too much. i am now officially introduced to the grimm-creature-world and i have to admit, i kind of like it.

wouldn’t it be nice
leaving cape town made me really sad, i had to say goodbye to some of my best friends. but joburg awaited me with all the friends i have here so let’s get on the plane and fly there...hours later, because the flight had been delayed, i arrived to joburg and was warmly welcomed, just as i imagined. in the car, we listened to this interesting adaption of a beach boys song - all musicians in a car. you have to be one of us to understand, i guess
