Indesign 3
Finally, I selected the images I wanted to put into the zine and dragged them onto the indesign document, resizing and moving as I needed. As I was doing this, i was sure to leave spaces for some text and at the end i added in information for each decade.

Indesign 2
To give my zine a textured background, I created a master page to apply to all of the pages. The master page consisted of a transparent overlay of a dust texture with a yellow background layer created using the box tool

Photoshop
Before I imported any of my images to indesign, I wanted to cut around the images to give the zine a ‘handmade’ look while still looking clean. I imported my chosen images to Photoshop, rasterised the image and used the lasso tool to draw around my photos before deleting any excess parts off. Then I exported each image into a folder to use as a source for my zine.

Indesign
I made my Zine within indesign. I made 8 facing pages on a size of A5 paper. This was a conscious choice, as informative zines tend to be smaller than A4 and mine was a look through time of hip hop’s fashion.

Asap Rocky
Possibly the single most prominent person in hip hop fashion in the 2010′s is Asap Rocky. He not only flaunts high end fashion, but does so in a very directed way with much purpose to it. Now it isn’t about having the most expensive stuff, though still pricey, its about building an outfit in a purposeful manner. Though he speaks of Raf Simmons a lot, with a song dedicated to him, the garments he wears always form a very cohesive outfit. Asap Rocky is conscious  about what he wears, and this is the very reason why he is was the forefront of fashion within the 2010′s.

Odd future
In the early 2010′s a hip hop collective called odd future was formed. It was made up of teens who were a part of skate culture, but now with stigmas of masculinity broken down skate wear was able to be colourful and vibrant. This helped in the reemergence of the skate wear from the 90′s but now was merging with hip hop culture. While the previous decade still regarded high end fashion as important, this decade would see a more individualistic approach to fashion.

Kanye west
Leading on from Pharrell’s example the 00′s allowed for a world where rappers could wear bright colors in patterns and the focus of fashion turned away from the content of music and became more about the clothing. A significant piece of pop culture is Kanye west donning his famous pink Ralph Lauren polo shirt - she shifted the focus away from the music and challenged the deep rooted masculinity in hip hop fashion. This was the start of a revolution - Kanye West brought focus onto what could be fashionable regardless of masculinity; years later the likes of Young Thug and Jaden Smith were able to wear dresses. The rules of fashion within the hip hop world were becoming loose.

Pharrell Williams
The 90′s was not consistent in its sense of fashion, but it did establish that fashion within hip hop was powerful. On the other end of the spectrum from Wu Tang, Pharrell Williams was part of N.E.R.D. And with this, he brought a new style to accompany the band. Skate wear, mixed with the japanese brand Bape brought a whole new style to the hip hop scene - one that shaped the scene in the 00′s.

Wu Wear
In the 90′s, rap group Wu Tang Clan released a line of clothing called Wu Wear that allowed them to control fashion. The same things these people would wear became popularised: timberland boots, baggy jeans, oversized tanktops and baseball jackets. The release of this marked something new, as it was rap artists releaseing clothes themselves and having control over what could become popular

Run D.M.C - My Adidas
The 1986 release of Run D.M.C’s track My Adidas, and the style the group put forth was culturally significant for fashion at the time. While other rappers opted for a glam look, Run D.M.C wore the same clothes they had always been wearing as kids - tracksuits and sneakers. This was important as it gave the kids of Queen, New York a sense of familiarity within these celebrities. Run D.M.C represented the people they grew up, they represented their fans. The group had used their fashion to create an environment for black youth to feel comfortable in becoming successful in.

Dapper dan
Dapper dan was a fashion designer in the early 1980′s who had pioneered a very iconic style that married high end labels withthin the world of streetwear. Though his rolls of Gucci and Louis Vuitton were fake, screen printed by hmself, it did not stop him from creating pieces that sold for over thousands of dollars. If he was to buy the materials from the brands, the expenses meant it would have taken years before luxury brands recognised the market for streetwear. However, he was not simply making bootleg garments but rather combining the luxury element of LV with the urban style of streetwear, making all of his pieces significantly unique.

Introduction - signature project
Fashion has been shaped by culture throughout time, however there has been a  subculture within fashion that has been relavent for around 40 years. Since its emergence in the 80′s hip hop has had a deep cultural impact that has managed to produce its own subculture of fashion - hip hop fashion. Because it has been changing through time, I wanted to document this process from the earlier days of rap with run D.M.C, to the more recent years with ASAP Rocky.

Evaluation of project
This project was interesting as it allowed me to work within a team of people who were of different backgrounds in fashion but came together to cohesively form a brand. We created a brand concept to rework materials into new garments, this was inspired by a WGSN  board on patchwork clothing. From here the idea of our brand was born. We then moved onto designing the garment, which was a patchwork denim jacket. This worked well as denim jackets tend to be a staple in wardrobes and from here we realised our target customer: millennials. People who care both about fashion and the environment and have the money to act on it. Choosing this as the customer base was successful as it provided a realistic outcome for the brand.
In all, the selection of the garment tied in successfully into the brand identity - bringing together the idea of seeing fashion in a way that is sustainable for the future. However, the cost of creating the garment was a lot higher than we initially anticipated. Due to this, if we could change something it may be the type of garment we made - potentially opting for patchwork jeans as that would cost significantly less to make in both materials and time. This would be a good point for the brand to start bringing in some profit.
