I may not be able to feel romantic or sexual attraction, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know what it means to love. It doesn’t mean my love isn’t as strong.

To my siblings, I love them like I love hot chocolate on a cold winter day. I love them like I love the sunset after a warm summer day. I love my siblings like I love the first rain of spring. They’re all I know and I can’t imagine a life without them at my side. Just as there is no year without the seasons, there will never be a time I don’t think of them.

To my parents, I love them like I love music as I fall asleep. I love them like I love books while bundled up in blankets. I love them like I love quiet company. I may have my moments when I clash with them, when the song is too loud for bed, the book too sad for comfort and I would prefer loud company. However, I still care for them and love them, no matter if there are times we don’t get along because they are still a comfort.

To my friends, I love them like a sailor loves the open and wild sea. I love them like a poet loves to paint across a page with words of sincerity. I love them like an astronomer loves the star streaked sky that depicts our very universe. It’s true, I didn’t have to choose them, just as those people could have chosen different careers. However, I chose to let them in and love them, chose to love them regardless of their flaws, even though once we were merely strangers.

No, you don’t have to fall in love with someone to know what it means to love. I love as strongly as everyone else, I just love differently.

I’ll never have a partner, sure, but I don’t need or desire one because I already have all the love I’d ever need. I don’t need a partner to know what ‘true’ love is, I already know.

For Valentine's Day my local library set up a romance free collection in the YA section, complete with little ace and aro colored hearts with silly "eww" "nope" "not for me" messages, and I for one think that is incredibly asexy of them.
