My problem with how people are relating to euphoria comes down to a few things. Mostly Zendaya said it best when she said “we are not our worst mistake and we all deserve redemption.”

But my biggest problem is the way people are framing things as ‘this person did that so they deserve the way they were treated.’ I am going to be very clear when I say that I believe anger is important, and how you share your feelings with another person is also important. In terms of this show specifically, none of these teenagers deserve the treatment they are receiving from one another. Cassie doesn’t deserve to be beat up by Maddy, Jules doesn’t deserve to be verbally abused by Rue. Just because you’ve hurt someone it does not give you the upper hand in a relationship to then be allowed to hurt the person back, or hurt them worse. Relationships are not a game, no one ‘wins,’ relationships are not black and white, and relationships do not exist in a vacuum outside of the trials and tribulations of the outside world. Remember this when you are discussing these characters because a lot of what I’m seeing is very immature and very misguided commentary on the show. Especially when it comes to discussing the women of this show...

the queasy feeling when dylan and sadie start to kiss.... the growing panic when you realize they’re fully making out... that’s exactly how people should have reacted to seeing jake and taylor. people either ignored this gut feeling or completely didn’t have it, and that’s a problem. how blatantly the film cuts to the chase and doesnt beat around the bush isn’t just a perfect demonstration of how taylor is committed to allowing herself to fully present and process what she really went through, but of how committed she is to using her art to prevent other young women and vulnerable people from finding themselves in similar situations, whether it’s from their own heightened awareness or the awareness of people around them who can step in if need be

i know people care about what details it gives about taylor/jake but i love the fictionalised element to it. like taylor being a successful storyteller but as an author not a singer and having red hair to match sadie instead of sadie being made to look like her. i feel like it sort of removes it from being just like celebrity breakup gossip and elevates it into this epic tragic love story. obviously we all know the inspiration but it really stands on its own as a work of art. like i wasn’t watching it thinking “oh this is the story of a taylor swift breakup” i was just watching a short film about love and heartbreak and coming of age.
