PROJECT 6 - ANIMATION -ugh
When I first heard about the theme of the animation project - mush - for some reason, I immediately thought about the mushroom spin in figure skating. So for this project, I will be doing a digital animation of the mushroom spin which turns into an actual mushroom.
-
I knew the mushroom spin would take many frames to complete, but I didn’t know it would take this much.

VIDEO LECTURES? ART ABOUT POLITICS? ideas after Ho Rui An
After the presentation and discussion questions on Ho Rui An, I began to think about what should be considered art. Like I mentioned many posts ago when I talked about my ideas for the social media graphic project, I said that I tend to not let my works get political. And much more posts before that one, I also wrote another one commenting on the use of words in context of making art. I discussed how I believe that the idea of art shouldn’t be solely relying on language. Quoting my own lines: words should just be one element that’s included to enhance the idea that the artist wants to put forth, and if the art is purely just words, I would rather call this art form a prose or the propaganda. I’m not trying to limit the number of ways people can create art; I’m just expressing the idea that there should be an appropriate use of elements like text.
The reason why I tend not to let my works be political is because I genuinely belief that art shouldn’t be manipulated as a messenger, or a medium to present political informations and support a certain cause. If they are used for such purposes, they are closer to propagandas than to art. My thoughts might be criticized or disapproved but whatever. Similar to what I said for the usage of words in art, I’m not trying to narrow the definition of what is art. A formal video lecture that’s installed in an exhibition is something that I want to reluctantly call art. Although art is sometimes about pushing the boundaries or taking risks, a video lecture should just be a lecture, regardless of what is the content of the lecture.

a quick reflection on the Sparrow’s Flight.
Although I didn’t really vibe with what’s going on in this animation, it’s a very aesthetically pleasing short film considering each of the medium that’s incorporated. With the music, illustration, photos (and collages), instead of an animation, I’d like to call this work a digital mixed media in motion. It reflected so much of the artist’s creativity, and it gave me a much broader perspective regarding the elements that would make an animation.

COLLABORATION?
The question of whether or not artists should collaborate for projects is raised many times in this class. Personally, as a young developing artist who’s only been stuck at school going after each deadlines, I’m not very much experienced in the idea of collaboration; in fact, just because almost every single project (paintings, drawings, photos, prints, etc.) I’ve done for my past academic career is individual and not partnered or grouped, it even makes me a little against the whole concept of collaborating - I never really needed to collaborate anyways. However, growing to be a part of a bigger community, a bigger art community, it is certainly very necessary to learn to collaborate and share and donate ideas and contribution. I think there are many kinds of collaboration, but I would like to generalize it into two types of collaboration. The first being the collaboration prior to carrying out a design, which is the collaboration for coming up with the best idea. The second being the collaboration on executing the idea. I consider the first type of collaboration very important, because without a final plan that is thoroughly thought out and confirmed by everyone on board, it’s incredibly difficult to move on to the next step. The second type of collaboration is equally important. The executing process of a collaboration often makes me think of the science or socials posters from high school that are made in groups. Of course, the first type of collaboration is often easy as the common goal for the group is to finish the project based on the criteria. However, after dividing up the sections on a poster and each person work on it individually, the final poster would be composed all together with different fonts and different style of drawings... Hence, with this awkward image stuck in the back of my mind and to think about art collaborations, I think it’s very crucial for artists to also agree on a cohesive choice of style.

Like what Ege suggested, I’m thinking to make this into an actual instagram story and use the opening five frames of gradient grey as credits.

PROJECT 5 - MOVING IMAGES - FINAL
In my writing, I talked about a man who, by his looks, appear to be very dull and mundane. He looks very ordinary so people generally don’t bother to pay attention to him. These people are not randomly assuming things as they see him in his regular routine of going to work and getting off work; from a very limited perspective, he become the most boring person. However, he isn’t what he appears to be and there are many characteristics of him that made him an interesting human...
This is a general summary of the section that I used from my writing. To match and make sense of the words, I chose a general grey theme to deliver the colour of boredom. As I left my voice recording to play for a little bit while I introduce my character, I used five frames of grey, from the darkest shade to the lightest to build up the anticipation. Then, in the midsts of the grey, there is this guy who does not have his own colour, buried deep in all the prejudice and judgements. For the man’s head and face, I did a bunch of random scribbles, because he can honestly be anyone and I would like my audience to put themselves into the narrative.
The project is told in the form of an instagram story. This is chosen deliberately as I want to convey the idea that the man is sharing what’s going on in his life, thereby giving a chance for people to uncover the other side of him. Each frame for the story depicts something that would appear new to the audience, things that are quite unexpectedly fun and pleasant for him to do. I also added as much details as possible to make each frame extra engaging and enjoyable.
--
After presented my project in class, I found that the 5 frames of different shades of grey in the opening is a bit awkward as not everyone was able to understand my purpose of it. I’m very glad people picked up my choice of colour and style of illustration. However, like what we discussed, I could’ve made a better decision when aligning my voice recording with my frames. A lot of people got confused as not every part of my narration matched with my illustration.

PROJECT 5 - MOVING IMAGES
For this project, I decided to use a piece of my own writing that I did this semester in my writing seminar. In that class, I was asked to read Karen Russel’s Vampires in the Lemon Grove. From the very beginning of the first chapter, Russel employs a little plot twist of the protagonist who is a vampire. With that said, the prompt for our discussions is to write about an original character and give it a plot twist. I actually wrote about two character that I invented - the first one is a paragraph that’s talking from the perspective of a puppy, and the second one, which I used for this project, is about a man who people often misunderstood. This reason one I chose this piece is because the writing itself kind of deals with identities and people’s biased judgements. As the finished project will be created into an artwork, I want my art to deliver a powerful message regarding people’s identities and unwanted stereotypes.

I don’t know if I’m right but from the two different attempts of collage I did for the last project, I’m noticing myself developing a certain style of my own that’s specific for collages??

PROJECT 4 - DIGITAL COLLAGE - CONTINUED - FINAL 2.0
In time of such terrible pandemic and in reaction to how Cornell returned all of us home, I got inspired by my flight back from Ithaca to my home, Vancouver, Canada. When I was first notified about the update on the transitioning to online instruction back in March 10th, I knew that by sometime after spring break, when school will be officially online, I should be leaving campus and going back home. I was prepared for being dismissed but certainly, I didn’t expect to leave so soon. However, later in the week on Friday, President Martha sent out the final update that school will be effectively suspended starting from 5:00pm. It was a moment that I did not see coming so quickly, and it was even a bit shocking to me. What was even more shocking was the next day when my parents told me that I need to fly back in one day (it’s an understandable decision after-all as they are worried that if I fly back at a later date, the airport will be packed with people). Their call was on Saturday morning and my flight is on Sunday 6am. I had one day to pack my entire room and leave safely. There were too much emotions going on all at once but I also don’t have time to deal with them. I just packed and that’s all I did. By 3am on Sunday, my uber came and picked me up. I was then on my way to Syracuse, and flew and stopped at Chicago, and then finally, Vancouver. Between Chicago and Vancouver, I got delayed five more hours, but other than that, I still got back fine.
Throughout my “journey” returning home, my mixed feelings never stopped bothering me. I didn’t know what to think, what to feel, where to look at, or even what to do (especially at the layover in Chicago). I was exhausted from all the non-stop packing but truthfully, I don’t think I’m tired; I was a little excited about what is before me.
I kept myself recording throughout my trip back as I really want to put something together using everything that I documented all this time. And I did as planned using project 4. For my composition, I want to deliver the fast-paced, stressing, nervous but also blurry and obscure feeling that I had. After looking at all of the photos I took, I found that the colours in the tunnel of the O’Hare airport best suits what I’m trying to communicate, and I used photos I took there as the main element. Although the original colours were very already extraordinary themselves, I still edited the photos a little to heighten the saturation, thereby furthering my expression of the crazy and unimaginable frenzy. Besides the O’Hare, I also incorporated photos from all the airport that I stayed and passed for this trip. For all of these photos, I cut them up into multiple pieces, of various sizes, and organized my own arrangement with everything that works together as a whole scene. In my composition, I add on to the tunnel idea of the O’Hare airpot as I found the tunnel accurately reflects on the speed and blurry impression that I had. On top of that, the tunnel is also made to seem very long but it’s going forward. I also had big blocks of blue that interrupted the whole image a little. These colour blocks are from the Vancouver airport, and I included them as glitches to bring out the sense of how chaotic everything is. And because of the chaos, I might not be remembering everything, and the things that were too busy for my to remember are being glitched and deleted. Another big part of my piece is the scanned flight ticket. As my flight was a connecting flight, I had two tickets one to Chicago and the other to Vancouver. I had a long time to decide on which one I should use, because the second ticket to Vancouver can convey the idea that I’m going home. However, the final decision was made to use the ticket from my first flight as the time of departure is something I really want to highlight on as it enhanced the stress and speed.

PROJECT 4 - DIGITAL COLLAGE - CONTINUED - FINAL 1.0 (NOT POSTED ON GDRIVE)
I want to carry on with the concept of visual experience. But instead of talking about the visual experience on a trip to a gallery, I want my piece to articulate on the visual experience of visiting different places and the different experiences of being inside various spaces and architectures. I used a painting of mine that I did last semester of a space that I re-created. The painting itself is in a way like a collage because the place itself was dissected and put together using two spots from the Cocktail lounge in Olin. Other components of this piece are photos that I took from my trips to Europe and some places in New York. All the places that I choose to use in this composition, including the re-composed cocktail lounge, are ones that are very visually stunning to me, and I want to recapture the impression I have for all of each spaces.
*I included two versions as I’m still working on this piece

PROJECT 4 - DIGITAL COLLAGE
For this project, I was initially thinking to create a piece that speaks about the visual experience of someone who’s more of an amateur in art that is visiting a museum or gallery. I think my idea and the concept of doing a collage (which is to have cut outs of photographs and juxtapositions) will work well together. However, on top of a photo of my own painting, a lot of the elements I need in order to make this composition work involved other artworks done by famous artists and that does not meet the criteria of using entirely original content. So I need to think about another idea...
To be continued...
