Even as a kid, Chandler always had an antisocial streak in him. His family had taught him at a young age to trust nobody, and he grew up harboring so many secrets from the humans around him. His own company was often the easiest, and least tiring, option. But despite all of that, he knew how to act extroverted. Chandler had many friends all through school, and found it to be very transferrable to his customer service skills as a photographer. Asking Alex to drink with him had been simple; he needed a drinking buddy and Alex was there.
He appreciated the silence as they walked towards the pub. He was already buying the other man alcohol, they didn’t need to talk about how clear the night sky was, or how the island had bounced back so quickly from the hunter attacks, or where they were from. It was comfortable.
Chandler was oblivious to how uncomfortable Alex was in the shifter bar. It didn’t occur to him that a shifter would feel out of place here, either. But he caught on to Alex ordering immediately and nodded in approval with that choice. He quickly asked for a vodka soda himself (extra vodka, of course). He chuckled as Alex finally broke the silence with a question. “Oh yeah, all the time. It keeps life a little spicy.” Chandler chuckled slightly. There was some truth to his sarcastic comment, but only with the context that parties in the woods were fairly common in Minnesota. Especially in the college town he moved to after high school. “Do you always take strangers in the woods up on free drinks?”
-
“I take up free drinks.” Alex gave a little shrug, though it wasn’t entirely the truth, because Alex didn’t drink much at all, it was mostly drinking wine with Charlie at dinner, or tequila when Charlie would bring it home every now and then. Even then, Alex wasn’t one to drink an excessive amount, not even enough to get a buzz. That is, unless something was bothering him enough he just wanted to silence it for a bit. This was one of those times, however, considering how in his head he was about not belonging anywhere. He could definitely see himself having too much, especially if someone else was willing to pay for it.

chvndlr:
Chandler often came out to Moonstruck Pub to drink, feeling more comfortable in the shifter space than anywhere else on the island. But, in his few months of living on Paradisus he had completely avoided the nearby shifter woods. Growing up in the suburbs, he had always preferred larger cities and downtown areas. He almost didn’t think about the forest on the island and when he did remember it existed, he could always tell himself he was too busy. There weren’t enough hours in the day to step into woods for the first time since his whole pack had been murdered and actually deal with that trauma.
Today felt different though. He almost felt like he could handle it and, if not, there was always a bar right there that would let him drink until he forgot. He anticipated that his first step into the woods would bring back everything from his old life, but anticlimactically….nothing happened. He heard a branch snap under his foot, smelled the sweet aroma of the koa trees, and listened as the wind played with the wood around him. This was nothing like the fir and cedar of Northern Minnesota. It was like comparing Eden to Wayzata; they were so different that it felt safe. And for the first time in three years, Chandler found himself letting his guard down enough to fully shift.
It felt almost foreign to be on all fours again, but natural at the same time. He imagined this is what it felt like for most people to go visit their childhood homes, or to watch a movie you knew by heart but hadn’t actually watched in a long time. His skin felt like someone else’s, but the fur was his own. His movements as he ran through the woods were his as well. So, too, was the howl that left his mouth. That part felt best of all.
He picked up on Alex’s scent before he saw him, but still slowed down so that the other shifter wouldn’t think he was attacking. As Alex turned to face him and spoke, Chandler switched back to his human form. He stretched a little, his body already a little sore from how long it had been since his last shift. “Uhm, okay?” Chandler replied, not really sure why Alex was telling him that. But despite how good it felt to shift and run through the woods, Chandler was still in desperate need of a drink and he was worried he’d gone to Moonstruck Pub alone a few too many times to not raise suspicions. “Want to get a drink then? My treat.”
-
Alex wasn’t startled by the other when he came up behind him, he’d sensed him coming and Alex knew he was bound to see shifters in their animals forms here. Alex, however, wasn’t entirely comfortable shifting just yet- even if he’d been on the island for close to a year now- he was still so used to hiding and feeling the need to be wary of anyone. The only person on the island he completely trusted was Charlie, and he was slowly, slowly warming up to his sisters.
“Sure.” It wasn’t like Alex to take someone up on an offer like that, but he felt he could use a drink himself, considering how shitty the shifter woods made him feel. He was a shifter, but he was raised by witches, and he couldn’t help but feel like he didn’t belong with either species. Alex didn’t really belong anywhere, and the shifter woods was a great reminder of that.
Not much was said between the two as they walked to the bar, and it only made Alex feel a tinge worse when he saw they were going to the Moonstruck- the pub owned by a shifter. Once seated, Alex ordered immediately, wanting to let himself drink and relax, even if it was with a total stranger. “You always ask strangers you meet in the woods if they want to drink with you?” Alex wasn’t entirely sure what else to say, they’d pretty much only shared their names with each other and that was it. Not that Alex was hoping to make a lifelong friendship out of this, he just thought maybe they should at least break the awkward silence.

Alex hadn’t planned to stay on the island for as long as he had. He came to town with the intentions of visiting his friend for a few months and then leaving not only the island but the entire supernatural world behind. In his mind, it had caused him more pain than anything. He made a point not to spend any time in the shifter woods either, always having that feeling that he didn’t belong anywhere. But now he was creating a home on the island with Charlie, and it was set in a neighborhood just a little way outside of the shifter woods, so he figured he would allow himself to explore it a little. It reminded him of his childhood when he and Charlie would play in the woods, climbing trees and hanging out in the treehouse Charlie’s father and brother built for them. The area seemed perfect for them to live in.
Maybe he was still a bit paranoid from the attack or maybe he felt so out of place that he worried someone would call him out on it, but he stopped in his tracks as he heard someone coming up behind him, turning to face them. “I was just about to turn back and leave.” He said, almost like he was trying to beat them to telling him he shouldn’t be there.

Charlie was endlessly glad that Alex didn’t want to push her for more–it was one of the reasons she’d found it so easy to talk to him in the first place, because she knew she could stop at any point and he wouldn’t pressure her to continue. But Charlie didn’t want to continue and be negative, not with how much effort Alex had put into all of this as a surprise for her. So when he nudged her she stood, finally taking a look around the living room they were sitting in, listening as he spoke.
Lacing her fingers through his, she smiled at the comment, humming softly. She could see it, with the way the front already looked like the cottages that lined the road they used to live on. “We should plant flowers out front, like my mom had. Or fruits and veggies in the back like Esme.”
-
Alex couldn’t help the smile that pulled onto his lips as she spoke. He hadn’t reminisced about their old neighborhood in ages- often tried his best not to think about his childhood at all. Surprisingly, he thought it was kind of... nice. It was nice to finally be able to think about it without feeling so devasted for losing it, and he wondered if that meant he was finally beginning to heal from it, though he knew he owed that to Charlie. Alex was sure he wouldn’t be where he was now without her- not as happy, not as confident, and not even on the island at all because he’d stayed just for her.
“We should. I don’t know much about flowers, but Esme had me plant a vegetable garden on my own when we moved to the states.” Alex gave a little shrug in an attempt to do what he always did; sell himself short for how knowledgeable he was in so many different things.
And as Alex spoke, he led her to the kitchen. White walls, and white cabinets beneath the counters, with birch counter tops. Nearly every room in the house, including the kitchen had large windows, and these were placed behind the sink with a view of the little patio in the backyard with the shifter woods in view behind. The kitchen was still pretty empty like the rest of the house, but he knew it wouldn’t be for long- at least, he hoped it wouldn’t. Alex had never been materialistic considering how many times his life had been uprooted, and he’d noticed Charlie was the same. However, he hoped that since they had a house to share now, they could make it a home together. “I hope you like it. I figured I can make dinner if you make the desserts.” Alex gave her hand a little squeeze, hoping she liked every aspect of the house.

Harley had some time to kill between the comic book store closing and his shift at the bar, but he didn’t really feel like going all the way home or getting to Moonstruck Pub too early when he had to stay until close tonight. So he found himself at the cafe, although the late afternoon/early evening rush certainly caught him by surprise. The problem was a lack of tables! After ordering his drink, he started searching in vain for one. It wasn’t until he made eye contact with Alex, who then spoke to him and nodded towards an empty seat. Harley quickly pieced together what he was saying, and sat down across from him. “Thank you!” He replied with a smile, then added in a conversational tone. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in here.”
-
Alex didn’t know Harley very well, but he’d met him a time or two before, and Alex didn’t mind him sitting with him, though he’d planned to simply return to his book before Harley was speaking again. Alex looked up at him once more, setting his book down on the table. “Yeah. I don’t come often. I’m just waiting for someone.” He gave a little shrug. “I’m not a big coffee drinker anyway.”

Charlie exhaled shakily as Alex pulled her hands down away from her face and replaced them with her own, taking over wiping away her tears. And all the while she listened to him speak, sniffling softly as she met his eyes. A few weeks ago… “Look at you, keeping secrets.” Her voice was quiet, still slightly thick with tears, but she had a little smile on her face, trying to lighten the mood she’d singlehandedly brought down. When Alex started to ramble though Charlie just moved her hand to his face, cupping his cheek so she could lean in and kiss him softly. “It’s not too soon. Or rather…I don’t care if it is.” She leaned her forehead against his, closing her eyes as she leaned against him. “It’s what we both want.”
Charlie stayed leaning against him for a moment longer before she let out a breath and pulled back. “Show me around?” She asked softly, stroking her thumb along his cheek before letting her hand drop to her lap. “I…I want to see our house.”
-
Alex finally stopped his rambling when she kissed him, finding a bit of relief in the fact that she didn’t seem to care, that she wanted to be with him even if it was a bit soon. It all just felt so... right. He was glad she seemed to want it as badly as he did.
“Yeah..” Alex spoke softly, cupping her cheek and gently stroking his thumb against her skin before continuing, “If you’re okay. If you need more time, we can take it.” He moved to press his forehead against hers for a moment. “You can tell me anything. Anytime.”
They sat there for a moment longer before Alex gave her a little nudge so they could both stand. He immediately leaned down and scooped up her hand in his, lacing their fingers together as he gave her hand a little tug. “It kind of reminds me of our houses back in England. From what I can remember of them, anyway.” Alex shrugged a bit before leading her towards the kitchen since she’d already (sort of) seen the living room area.

Anytime Charlie had to work late at the bakery, Alex made a point to walk her home, but if he didn’t have to work himself, he would spend time at the cafe nearby to sit and read and wait for Charlie’s shift to end. He would often pick up a coffee or tea for her too, especially if they were planning on going up to the university’s roof afterwards.
He was sitting at one of the tables reading when he noticed the other looking for a place to sit. While it was relatively quiet in the little shop, most of the tables were full. “You can have this seat. I won’t be here much longer anyway.” He offered, nodding to the seat across from him.

While Charlie didn’t allow herself to breakdown completely, she still let some of it out, crying silently against his neck as she clung to him, her fingers gripped into his shirt all the while. And thankfully Alex didn’t press her for more or say anything else, instead he just held her and gave her the time (and comfort) she needed- something she was endlessly thankful for. Eventually though, she did let out a long, shaky breath and she pulled back when he did, letting him prop her chin up and she sniffled softly, giving him a weak little smile. “Yeah.” She agreed quietly, moving one of her hands off from around his neck so she could wipe roughly at her eyes, trying to scrub away the last remnants of her tears and trying to just suck it all up and get a grip.
“I-I uh…I’m sorry..I didn’t mean to just…blurt all that out. And ruin your surprise.” The same sad little smile stayed on her face as she met his eyes for a moment more before she looked away from him to look around the future-living room instead. It really was nice… “When….–when did you even do this..? Get this place?”
-
Alex moved his hand out from under her chin and gently tugged at her wrist as she tried to roughly wipe at her face, moving her hand so he could then gently wipe at her tears. He didn’t like to see her so upset but he was thankful she was willing to be so open and vulnerable with him. “Don’t apologize. You didn’t ruin anything. I’m glad you told me.” His voice was soft as he spoke, moving a comforting hand to tuck her hair behind her ear. “A few weeks ago. I’d started looking before the attack and I found this place. I wasn’t sure if it was too soon or not so I didn’t really say or do anything but after we were practically living together anyway, I figured we might as well, right?” He gave her a little playful nudge. “I hope you like it. You can tell me if you don’t... or if this is too soon or-...” Alex cut himself off, realizing he was beginning to ramble.

Alex never really drank coffee, but he would find himself in the little shop when he was picking up some for Charlie or simply waiting for her to get off work to walk her home, especially now since they lived together near the shifter woods. This time of night the shop was quiet with few people, so he’d ordered a tea and sat in the window seat as he began reading one of his novels.
He hadn’t even realized Feyre’s dad had taken a seat at the table near him until Lee suddenly spoke, causing Alex to lift his head and look over at him. If he hadn’t already known who he was, Alex wouldn’t have tried to strike up a conversation at all. “What are you working on?”
@paradisusstart
Lee had been relatively busy lately. Once the dust had settled on the island, he found himself able have a clear head for once. He wasn’t worried about whether or not his family was safe. He wasn’t focused on all of the bad that was out there in the world and it left him able to work again. He hadn’t written in a long time. Not since before he had found his family once more. So much of his writing had been giant clues, hoping to send a message . Now he didn’t need to do that anymore and in a way it was both a blessing and a curse. He had anywhere he could go, but Lee had no idea where to start. So instead the witch stared at his laptop with a sigh, before shaking his head. He took a sip of his coffee and glanced back at the counter of the shop unsure if something to eat would help his creativity. “ It never used to be this hard to come up with things”

Charlie let out a shaky breath when his hands moved on top of hers, stopping her nervous movements and she immediately shifted her hands, turning them enough to lace their fingers together, gripping at him as she finally looked up at him, meeting his gaze as he spoke about his own feelings…and how her parents (hopefully) felt. She held onto his hands for a moment more before she finally let go of them- but only so she could wrap her arms around his neck, twisting enough on his lap so she could hug him, immediately burrowing her face into his neck as she closed her eyes, feeling a few tears starting to well up at the relief she felt coursing through her.
-
Alex worried for a moment as she pulled her hands away, afraid that she’d pull away from him entirely but instead she moved to wrap her arms around him and hug him. He did the same, holding her close as she buried her face into his neck. His heart ached for her, having no idea she’d gone through all that she had, nor did he think she would react to the house in this way. But he hoped this was something he could give her that no one else would- a home and a safe place to stay.
Alex held her for a while as he waited for her to calm down, he could hear her heartbeat slowly returning to normal, but he held her for a bit longer before saying anything. If she needed to cry, he’d let her cry. He simply rubbed a comforting hand on her back as he held her in his arms. Finally, he felt her calm once more and he slowly pulled away enough to hook a finger underneath her chin so she would look up at him. “You okay?” His voice was soft, hoping she would understand that he wasn’t going anywhere. She was his present and his future.

xaviam:
As Alex sat across from Xavi, she sighed and removed her feet from the table. Now it was time to try to figure out what to do with them again. She wrapped them around the chair legs, and decided that was good enough for now. “You weren’t the only person. Actually, you were the only one who was obviously suspicious of me.“ Well, at least of her being a mermaid. That overly eager cop was also suspicious of her but not because of her species. He kept gushing, and it reminded her of Ellora’s response to learning about it. “Actually, Ellora did figure it out before the announcement. But, besides her you’re the only one.”
He spoke about books, and her eyebrow raised slowly in curious surprise. She knew humans had their own legends of mermaids, but she’d never heard about them in too much depth. “Always? You didn’t know we existed until a few days ago” She tilted her eyebrow back up.” She didn’t expect him to be so talkative and excited about this topic. “But sure, I’ll bite. What have you ‘always’ wanted to know?”
-
“Well, I’ve read enough books about our species to know that humans like to paint us all in a bad light. Apart from wanting to know if mermaids even existed, I’ve always wanted to know just what all humans got wrong.” He shrugged, not exactly wanting to say anything about how he’d always read mermaids lured men to their deaths or anything like that. “Just-.. I don’t know. I want to know about you. How you live, your abilities if you have any..” Alex didn’t even know what to ask, almost like he couldn’t believe it and it was causing his mind to draw a blank. “I mean I could probably even find some of the books I used to read here.”

Charlie’s exhale stuttered as Alex’s hand moved over her heart, mimicking a move she always did to try and calm him down and she felt herself deflating a bit more, her fight or flight slowly ebbing out of her and admittedly leaving her feeling a bit drained– especially given the whiplash of all the emotions she’d felt in the last ten minutes. She was glad then that he answered for her and made her move before she could even fully register his question, her steps slow as he moved towards the couch and when he sat and tugged on her Charlie only hesitated a second before she moved, sitting across his lap and leaning slightly into him.
“I…I’m sorry I..hadn’t told you.” Even sitting on top of him, Charlie managed to not meet his eyes, looking down at her own legs instead, wringing her hands in her lap slightly. “I just…I..I didn’t want you to..think less of me. I never finished school. I stole. I hurt people. I…wasn’t a good person.” Not like I’m much better now. “I always feel like..my parents..they probably would. Think less. Be ashamed. If..If they knew how I’d been.”
-
Alex watched her carefully as she spoke, his eyes trailing down to her hands as she began to wring them, and he almost instantly moved his hand to rest on top of hers. He didn’t want her to be upset or this anxious about the way he felt about her. “No. I don’t think less of you... and I don’t think your parents would be ashamed either.” He moved his hand to gently cup her chin, directing her to look at him. “I don’t think less of you. I could never.”
