Final concept art
Revised a bit from the previous post - the character didn’t have enough breathing space in the previous composition as she was squished to one side. Also rather than her being the salient point in the image, at first glance you would see the buildings in the background, so i had to fix that issue by making her a tad bit larger in the comp. Edited the foreground sandhill to frame her hands a bit better (silhouette) so you could clearly see that she is pulling the cart. City is also smaller so it looks more distant. By lowering the horizon line and giving more room for the sky, there is a bit more breathing space for the whole comp.

Final character design
Applied feedback - more colour rather than browns, more animalistic features, make her look lazier

More colour iterations - previous design didnt really replicate or reference the beautiful colours and patterns of Rubari embroidery. I found that too coloured patterns in my design were quite distracting from the character

Revised composition after crit - Bonnie recommended that she be made more distant from the town. I found that in the previous comp, the eye was drawn to the two people in the foreground rather than the character, and were thus distracting to the story i was trying to show. Previous comp it wasn’t clear who her character really was.
made and added watercolour textures to rocks and buildings

as part of my research i dove into the lapwings migration patterns and found the Rabari who herd cattle through north western India. The Rabari are a nomadic tribe and their name translates to “outsider”. Keeping animals is regarded as a near sacred occupation for them and see themselves as the herds custodians rather than their owners.
suitable for the highly migratory bird - the northern lapwing - nomadic

Updated Idea
- Merchant makes Shabti’s - —> shabti’s are little figurines in ancient egypt that function as workers in the afterlife
In egypt, people were very industrious and so you couldn’t skip work if you were ill or had something that prevented you from doing it, you had to send a friend relative or paid stranger to complete your work for you
in the afterlife the same rule applied, when the gods asked you to do a task you had to do it. Shabti’s were idols made when you’re living that are buried with you in the afterlife that function as the friend/stranger/paid stranger as they can replace you in doing the work the gods have asked you to do. Specifically designed shabti’s do different tasks
Character makes shabti’s when they’re living as a way to ensure they’re ready for the afterlife. They’re very lazy and are excited of the prospect of going somewhere where they is no disease and can have lots of down time, however having only a few shanty’s they don’t feel ready for the afterlife. They want to accumulate a vast quantity and variety of shabti’s to ensure they’re ready for any task called upon them.
However they’re too lazy to work super hard to attain the materials required for the more ornate and special shanty’s, hence they offer to make shabti’s for others using materials the other person has (ivory, stone, metals etc.) and then when having made the shabti they flee.
After fleeing they have to migrate to another place to escape consequences, much like the bird. The character pretends to be injured and sick to evoke sympathy from others like the bird and lure them into their traps. They’ve been accumulating a massive collection of shabti’s however still don’t feel its enough, and consequently have moved to lots and lots of different places. Time has passed too. Eventually they come across Catholics who they can’t convert to their religion in which shabti’s are required, so decides to spin it in saying that in order to get into heaven they have to pay their way with idols, they use this as a means to swindle people out of materials to expand their collection.
she’s a peasant, and consequently doesn’t have good materials only grass and wood. Hence needs to convince others to give him materials to make a really good shabti for them, then runs off when having gotten the materials.
Similar to the Rabari peoples - dedicating hours of their day to the craft of embroidery - he is expected to do this however he is too lazy

more iterations - have to portray her lazy, unmotivated character (hiding something also very secretive) however am struggling to do so
