EDUC 124 JOURNAL #3 [May 01, 2022]
TITLE OF CHOSEN ARTICLE:
"Early predictors of first-year academic success at university: pre-university effort, pre-university self-efficacy, and pre-university reasons for attending university"
MAIN OBJECTIVE:
This report's main goal was to look into non-cognitive pre-university determinants of first-year retention.
RESULTS:
The study found that the more effort put in during the senior year of high school, the lower the likelihood of dropping out in the first year of university. This data is consistent with Casillas et al. (2012) findings, which show that effort has a long-term impact on academic success, even when learners change schools.
REFLECTION:
It caught my attention how academic self-efficacy does not guarantee or influence a student's academic success. The results showed that self-efficient learners are not always guaranteed success if they do not believe that they can successfully finish their chosen course. Additionally, the results showed that the more effort learners put in during their senior year of high school, the lower the probability of dropping out in the first year of university. In other words, cognitive development is useless without effort. For example, Jake is a brilliant student. However, he became complacent, so he didn't bother to review for the upcoming exams. After the results were out, he saw that he had failed and regretted his actions.
As a first-year student, I have devoted most of my time to my studies. For the longest time, I believed that through my efforts, success would grow. Considering the things I achieved, I think it is very effective to exert our best in everything we do.
As a future educator, the details that I learned from this research article will be handy in handling my prospective students. Given the knowledge, I would also do my best to encourage them to give and be the best they can be in their academics. Through pieces of motivation, I can lead them to success. As their second parent, I believe that I am also responsible for incorporating these into their minds. All in all, I think that this information will be helpful to me until the coming days ahead.

EDUC 124 JOURNAL #2 [Apr. 26, 2022]
During my puberty stages, I never experienced a "growth spurt." My height remained lower than that of the average. As a result, I was subjected to name-calling, which later lowered my self-esteem. I was called "pandak", "gasul", and "liit". In relation, "adolescent egocentrism" is a matter that I think could somehow explain why I experienced such. This term refers to adolescents experiencing high self-consciousness, which I think was evident. However, there were also positive consequences to my petite stature. I was often regarded as "cute" and "small but terrible". It is also to my advantage regarding others' appreciation and attention.
Based on my reading, adolescents usually have common interests, needs, strengths, and experiences. Therefore, working with their peers is what I think would be effective in teaching them. The "collaborative approach" is an educational approach to teaching and learning involving groups of learners working together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product (Laal & Laal, 2012).
In my opinion, as learning is a naturally social act in which participants converse among themselves, I believe that if adolescents collaborate with the people they can relate to, they will be able to share and learn more. They will be more active because they are familiar with the people around them. Learning occurs through the talk (Gerlach, J.M., 1994, p.12).
Examples of activities that can be implemented during classes are online-collaborative learning, the jigsaw method, think-pair-share, and peer teaching. Through these, education and learning can be effective for adolescents.

CHILD
Physical: This concept matters most in handling children as students. As they grow up, they develop particular abilities and feel the need to explore and interact with others. Hence, it is crucial for us teachers to know this and understand whatever phase they are in. On another note, this will also give us ideas on how to discipline them.
Moral: This concept refers to a child's ability to determine what's right and wrong. Teachers are also known to be their students' second parents. Hence, we need to be responsible and take part in nurturing a child's morality. In doing so, we must also appropriately implement discipline.
Development rates vary within and among children: It is also crucial to keep in mind that children grow, develop, and improve at different paces. Moreso, we teachers need to design our activities to accommodate multiple learning objectives.
ADOLESCENT
Cognitive: This concept is very significant in means of communication. It affects how students use language as well as how they receive and process information. Knowing specific details about my students' cognitive aspects will help me make my lessons more appropriate, develop compelling learning opportunities, and provide high-quality education.
Socio-Emotional: Adolescents tend to experience a change in their socio-emotional aspects. This is a crucial point to keep in mind as teachers. As humans, all of us have gone through this phase. Hence, it is common to understand the learners' development in their personality, socialization skills, mood, and others. While being understanding, it is also our responsibility to guide them through this stage of development.
Development rates vary within and among individuals: It is also crucial to keep in mind that learners grow, develop, and improve at different paces. We, teachers, need to design our activities to accommodate multiple learning objectives suitable for every student's needs.

MAR. 18, 2022 [ journal entry #5 ]
There are indeed many benefits to pursuing a teaching career. As a person who is motivated by a passion for education, I aspire to be a teacher who exhibits professionalism and integrity. I want to become a person who leads change in society by giving people a voice—education is power, after all. I also want to be patient, understanding, excellent at explaining things to people, can see the best in individuals, and have an optimistic approach to life.
People tend to remember their teachers for an absolute lifetime. It is as if our fingerprints don't fade from the lives we touch. Therefore, I want my students to remember me as a teacher who incorporates fun with learning and provides a sense of comfort and safety. I want my classroom to be an environment where students are encouraged to share, think, and express themselves—a warm, accessible, enthusiastic, and caring teacher. Lastly, I want my students to remember me as a teacher who inspires students with my passion for education and for the course itself, someone who constantly renews herself as a professional on her quest to provide students with the highest quality of education possible. I will educate, not just to make people smarter but to make them whole.
As early as now, I am already equipped with knowledge on the different PPSTs. Hence, I will do my best to become a responsible individual by following the school's policies and rules, treating others with courtesy and respect, taking the initiative, and lastly, being productive to maintain effectivity of work. I believe that by practicing these values, I will be able to develop them as a habit and serve as a role model to my future students. I want my job to have a significant impact and purpose as much as possible.

MAR. 15, 2022 [ journal entry #4 ]
A teacher’s personality should remain pleasant whether or not he/she is in an online or face-to-face environment. Even behind the screen, teachers should serve as role models to their students. However, certain situations seem to challenge and provoke their emotions. Even so, they need to keep their cool in order to preserve their reputations.
As a future educator, my ethical stance about teaching in face-to-face or virtual modality remains the same (as stated above). First, teachers should let themselves be guided by Article III Section 1 of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. It is stated that, “A teacher is a facilitator of learning and of the development of the youth; he shall, therefore, render the best service by providing an environment conducive to such learning and growth.” In relation, providing the highest possible quality of education is very significant in any modality. Second, in accordance with situations where teachers are scrutinized and ridiculed, I believe that Article III Section 3 explains the answer. It is stated that “Every teacher shall merit reasonable social recognition for which purpose he shall behave with honor and dignity at all times…” On the other hand, teachers are also protected under Article VIII Section 3 which states that, “Under no circumstance shall a teacher be prejudiced nor discriminated against by the learner.” Meaning, in any circumstance, teachers also have the right to defend themselves in an ethical and acceptable manner.
In conclusion, social media and other technologies are as strong as in person encounters when it comes to these issues. Every individual is at risk of staining their reputations. Therefore, it is important to think first before we act. It is not only our reputation as professionals that we should protect but also the welfare of our students. Remember, we are the standard.

As a teacher, it is significant to keep in mind the legal mandates of the teaching profession to prevent ourselves from being teacher shamed or being in a clash with the law. It was constructed for the shared good of the learners, teachers, and other people involved in the education system. The law tells us about our rights, privileges, duties, and responsibilities. On the other hand, it serves as a guide for dealing with our students using the appropriate measure for the given situation. It limits both the student and the teacher to avoid violating each other's rights. As evident as it is, innocence does not excuse anyone to the law. Therefore, as a professional teacher, it is expected to know all of these. Consequently, knowing the legal mandates of the teaching profession is vital for quality education and safety.

As an educator, my sole duty is to provide a stimulating educational environment where learners can grow physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. I will provide a safe environment while encouraging life-long learning where students are asked to share their ideas and experiences. I believe that my function is not just about teaching the subject; the focus of my profession relates very much to inspiring my learners to change and expand their personal, social and professional skills to the best of their ability.
I suppose that these three essential elements are conducive to education. (1) The teacher's part is to act as a companion, motivation, and guide. (2) Letting students participate in hands-on activities. (3) Learners shall discover and nurture their potentials, acquire knowledge and skills, and apply them in their daily lives.
The most critical part of teaching is our dedication to the curriculum. As teachers, we should listen, train, and mentor our students. Additionally, students shall participate in team-based learning, active lecturing, and simulations to further enhance their strategic and logical thinking. They would be assessed through homework, presentations, projects, and tests. I will also keep accurate records of individual progress and future needs and provide necessary feedback to improve the learners.
I see teaching as an environment that promotes equality and diversity. Based on my personal understanding, issues on various cultures, gender, language, and race, such as bullying and discrimination, are often experienced by the students. To prevent such events, I would be a role model by treating each of my students with equal attention and respect.
I shall continue to improve myself by evaluating my performance, knowing why I am having difficulties in my lessons, finding solutions to different challenges, creating my assessment tools, meeting and being inspired by fellow teachers, and letting creativity lead me. Through continuous improvement, I will be able to provide high quality education to all my students.

As a student for almost 15 years, I have observed my teachers and their ways of teaching. As a 21st century learner myself, the characteristics I want to possess are similar to what I liked the most about my former instructors. I believe that being an excellent teacher does not only pertain to being intelligent.
Prominently, I want to be a teacher who incorporates fun with learning and provides a sense of comfort and safety. I desire my students to have good vibes through my good sense of humor. As much as possible, I want my classroom to be an environment where students are encouraged to share, think, and express themselves. Lastly, I would like my students to remember me as a teacher who inspires students with my passion for education and the course itself. I want to be a person who constantly renews herself as a professional in her pursuit to provide students with the most high quality of education possible.

SEPT. 23 [journal entry no. 10]
After some pondering, I believe that my strongest archetype is somewhat in between persona and hero. Instead of a folktale, I chose the movie Harry Potter to further explain my argument. Severus Snape, is the character that I think is similar to me when it comes to archetypes. Snape is known to be fierce, scary, and demanding to his students. All throughout the chapters, his character remained to be negative up until the last chapter where it was revealed that Snape is just a broken hearted person hiding behind the mask of grim. On the other hand, it was also revealed that after all this time, he was sactificing himself to save the main character, Harry Potter, even though he is the child of the woman he loved with a different man. For me, both the 'Persona' & 'Hero' archetypes can be seen to both Severus Snape and I. Growing up, I have always shown the weak side of me to other people. I wasn't always like this though...every person around me were always used to seeing me as someone who is really intelligent, responsible, smart or anything you can say as 'the best'. Hearing this, you might not see any reason for me to hide my true self...but eventually, I decided to present myself as someone who is average & weak for the sake of my cousins who were always compared to me. I know it hurts their feelings everytime their parents tell them 'why can't they be like me?' or 'to do better than I do'. I began to conceal my real self, like an actor in a movie. By doing so, I also have the 'hero-like' archetype as I display courage and will for self-sacrifice. I showed everyone that I don't care what they say, but in the 'persona' side, I am actually hurt by how people look down on me even though I know that I am just pretending. But then, this was who I was back in middle school...now that I started university, I'm trying to bring back my image as the 'role model' in the family. I am not doing this because I regret what I did back then, but because I want to remove the mask I have been wearing for the past years and come out stronger than ever.

—these are current profile pictures on my different social media accounts like: youtube(channel), instagram, facebook, twitter, and telegram. I chose these pictures for I think they are what's appropriate for the different platforms including how and where I use them. For my youtube, instagram, and facebook, I used a photo that's not over-edited so that it shows how I really look, especially since I use them for publicity and school at the same time. For my twitter account, I used a photoshopped image of me and one of my favorite idols since that account is mostly used for fangirling. Lastly, my profile photo on my Telegram account is a picture of also one of my favorite female idols since I am known to resemble her facial features and complexion which I am flattered about😬.

—Poverty due to job loss and economic downturn, drug war, online violence, lack of media freedom, and political threats and harassment are the major social, economic, and political issues that I have chosen. Each of these issues had an impact on me, both physically and mentally. It was difficult for me to confront these issues in the midst of the pandemic.
—I couldn't help but be concerned after hearing about these on social media. Although I was not directly affected, reading and hearing about those who were made to suffer was heartbreaking. As a student whose primary responsibility is to focus on my studies, it inspired me to do my best in order to create a better future by making a difference, even if it is small, for future generations.
—As a Louisian, I believe it is my duty to study effectively and choose a smile for my part. I choose to defend what makes us brave and fit to exemplify that we deserve well of our land. This is the pledge I contribute to making for the sake of God and country (inspired from SLU Hymn).

—The image above shows a collage of some of my priced possessions. As you can see, most of them are collections. The photo on the upper right corner shows some of the "anime figurine collection" of my dad and I. Watching these shows is one of our bonding time whenever he has his day-off/after work and during my free time after class. The picture beside it (upper left) shows the instruments that I play. Music has been my passion ever since I was young...later on I learned how to write songs and decided to make use of music as my diary. The next image (middle) shows the fruit of my efforts, my academic achievements. Being an achiever since elementary will always be something that I'll be proud of. At present, I am doing my best to achieve more now that I'm already in university. Next is the photo in the lower left corner, which shows my collection of K-Pop merchandise that served as my gift to myself for surviving another year (since I only buy during Christmas to avoid spending too much). Even though I only started this collection of mine last year, I consider them important especially because I used my own savings and the happiness it gives me later on provides the inspiration I need in my studies. Last but not the least, the picture on the lower right corner shows my gadgets that became more significant now that I need them for my online classes. I don't have that much of them, maybe just enough for me to be occupied when I'm bored.
Tumblr media
—I also love to collect books like novels, pocket books, Japanese mangas, and the like. Though a picture of them is not included (just a photo of me buying them) since I left most of them at our house in La Union because they were too heavy for us to bring when we moved back here in Baguio.

—I'm also glad that when it comes to the material things that are mostly my 'wants' , my parents are supportive and okay with it since they too, are intersted in them. Still, they never fail to remind me saying that it is not bad to spend money on things that I want, as long as I think about it a couple of times, and that I wouldn't spend all my money and leave some for emergency and future use.

SEPT. 11 2021 [journal entry no. 6]
Dear Liya,
How are you? I know that you’re about to start middle school this year...please, don’t be afraid for this is only the beginning of your journey. I am writing this to you as your 19 year old self, a better version of you perhaps, and trust me, you still have a long way to go. You may have many insecurities, like your body and your height, but please, don’t be discouraged. There are many great things about you that other people will love like your pleasing personality and your angelic voice. This is also the time when you’ll learn to forgive and let go. I know you’ll be curious and meet this guy that will surely make your heart beat faster. Every time you see him you’ll feel like there are butterflies flying around in your stomach. His presence makes you so excited that you’ll eventually lose focus on the most important thing right now, your studies. This is one of the unfortunate things that I wish didn’t happen...but it was all part of the process and it’s something you can learn from. You’ll still be on top of your class nevertheless, but the people around you will notice how much you’ve changed. You’ll learn to keep secrets and even lie to your parents. I know that you somehow feel suffocated with ho strict your parents are that you want to break free from the cage, but they are only doing that to protect you from the harsh outside world...which I realized as I continue with my life. I know that you’re jealous of how others get to do what they want while you still have to make excuses to your friends every time they invite you to join their “galas” since you won’t be granted permission to join them anyways. I’ve been there, done that, and I know that these are just small temptations in your puberty age. The years would be tough, but I know you’re strong enough to face them, I mean, I wouldn’t be here writing this if you weren’t right? Anyways, i am glad to tell you that you won’t be doing anything serious out of these impulses. I’m proud to say that you know how to wait that even now you still haven’t had your first kiss yet, which is nothing to be ashamed of. Maybe you’re wondering how I am today? Well, I’m doing just fine. I just started college preparing to be who and what you always wanted to be, a teacher. Remember how you always played role play even on your own and pretended to teach using leftover manila papers and a stick you found somewhere in the storage room? Or that time when you were pretending to teach and all you were saying was “ok class” and “very good” while playing by yourself? Oh those are very good days indeed. I know this is an opportunity to tell you everything you need to know about the physical and sexual self, but I don’t think it is right to spoil the fun. Don’t worry, because you won’t be doing anything that you’ll regret for the rest of your life. You’ll be fine! Still, I am wishing you good luck for the next years to come. With that, I’ll be leaving a small advice: every time you feel down, scared, confused or even if you’re happy, excited, or inspired, feel free to express yourself through writing songs. That’ll help you a lot and at the same time, you’re exercising your passion. Sing your heart out my angel! I am dong my very best to survive in this present time, and I hope you will too.
Love,
Liya 2.0

favorite family tradition
—Before the pandemic, our whole clan holds a yearly reunion (which is mostly during December-January). We would have our own christmas party with games, prizes, food, and the like. This is also the time for us to bond with our relatives from abroad and build our connection stronger. This has been the most awaited occasion every year and will always be my favorite tradition. It has been a year or two since our last reunion and I am hoping we could have one this year.

favorite ulam (who cooks it best)
—Both of these lovely women have been the best cooks since I was young. They would always prepare delicious recipes for the whole fam. They taught me to eat what the adults eat, that's why I grew up not being the "mapili sa pagkain" child. I learned how to be content of what's on the table, and to be grateful for the blessings God has given us.
—Spicy chicken feet adobo is my favorite ulam made by my mom. She has her little secret ingredient that makes all her cooking delectable. On the other hand, my lola cooks pulpog (grilled pork seasoned with soy sauce, calamansi, etc. + her own secret ingredient) the best. Now that I went back home to Baguio, I miss my lola's cooking that I try to make them whenever I have time!

frequently uttered expression
—"ay tae..." "tae ka naman (insert name)" or "hala tae" had been my frequently used expression. I think the reason that I used this is for me to avoid cursing in front of other people. Sometimes this also serves as a joke between me and my friends.

“mi familia, mi mundo”
People are ready to risk their safety and survival for something aside themselves, like family. When a family is free of violence and persecution, it may be the place where we disclose our darkest secrets and stand the most exposed, a place where we learn to feel unique without being superior, and sacrifice for others without sacrificing ourselves. Our family is a place where we feel free.
This is also true in my life. Having such a strong bond with my family members makes me feel as if I have a friend, a teacher, and a guardian all in one. Because they are my world, I am willing to give up anything, whether material or not, for their happiness. Anyone, I'm sure, would do the same for the ones who make them feel most at ease.

"Sense Experience"
☆ What I saw: people continuing with their daily lives
☆ What I heard:
Some people are hardly getting by, some are motivating each other
☆ What I smelled:
*Not applicable*
☆ What I tasted:
Bitter-sweet (metaphorically)
☆ What I learned (reflection):
—As I sat peacefully, studying my surroundings, a bittersweet blast of wind stroked my face. People pounded their shoes on the frigid city streets as time passed, anxiously attempting to make ends meet. People went about their business as usual, attempting to re-establish contact in this new normal. I suddenly noticed how dissimilar all of our circumstances are. Motivated by the idea that "if they can do it, so can I." I walked back inside our house and accomplished my schoolwork.
