Patience for Painting

This is a filled request by the lovely @fanoffandoms23 for a scenario between Wally and her oc, Izabel! I find their dynamic quite sweet and had a lot of fun writing it! I hope I did Izabel justice :]

Wally was having a lovely day inside of Home, the norm for a neighbourhood as wonderful as the one he lived in. Sat inside his red abode, with a still life on the kitchen table he had set up before himself and a canvas slowly gaining colour with each swipe of his paintbrush. He hummed a flat tune as he did so, happy for the bright shining sun outside and how it hit the table just so through the window.

Or, how it did. Because as he watched, the sulight quickly became dappled, then clear, then dappled again. He tilted his head at that, pausing his hand as he considered how exactly to work that into his painting.

Just at that moment, Home flexed its floorboards.

Creak creak squeak!

"Hm? The weather? It is quite nice today, Home." Wally replied.

Groaaaannnn slam!

The house let its door swing open with the force of the wind that eagerly filling Home with a cold, sharp gust.

"Oh?" Wally said evenly, despite being buffeted with the suddenness of the gale, having to close his eyes slightly. It made the tablecloth flutter, threatened to tug his pompadour out of place. Still, curious as ever, Wally set his paintbrush and palette down and braved the outside, stepping outside to see what was happening.

The trees were stirred in a mild frenzy in one direction, and as Wally turned to face it he could see-- what was that? A sort of whorl of air, a tight spiral of black and white and red and blue that was rapidly growing closer. Home closed its door with a creak of concern, but Wally faced it with a calm demeanour-- even as the strength of the cyclone pressed the small puppet against his yellow door.

It whisked itself right up to him before disappearing entirely, leaving a girl standing right in front of Wally! A puppet with white felt and long black hair, blue pants and a red shirt with a striped tie. Her grin was wide, sharp teeth on full display.

"You!" Izabel exclaimed, pointing a finger at Wally with a hand on her hip. Wally looked left, then right, before pointing at himself.

"Me?"

Izabel furrowed her brows, mischievous smile faltering slightly. 

"Yes you! What, did you think I was talking to the house?"

"Maybe." Wally replied. Home wiggled its shingles, and Izabel blinked at the abode before shaking her head rapidly, black hair whipping about.

"W-well, I was talking to you! I'm Izabel. I heard you are a great painter, and I wanted to offer myself up as a muse!"

"Hello Izabel, I'm Wally." He waved at her despite the two of them being less than two feet apart. Then, the slightest scrunch appeared in the fabric between his eyes.

"A muse..." Wally repeated lowly. Izabel was quick to speak.

"Yes! For your art! I'm the perfect study, aren't I?" 

Izabel crossed her arms, shifting her weight to one hip as she smirked down at the smaller puppet. Wally tilted his head to the left, then the right. Then, slowly, his eyes widened from lidded to fully open. He stared, and stared, and stared at her for enough time that Izabel felt a flicker of confusion (and possibly fear) before he relaxed and nodded.

"Sure. I can paint you." he said, gesturing towards the copse of trees just behind Home.

"Come... Help me set up."

Izabel blinked as Home opened its door and Wally walked inside without another word. She looked to the windows, where Home gazed warily back at her. For a moment, her smile softened, and she patted the abode's doorframe in a soothing gesture as she headed inside.

Izabel helped carry the stool and easel while Wally carried his paints and paintbrushes, as well as a water cup. She set the things up where he pointed before standing in front of the trees.

First, she jumped up into one of them, hefting herself up into the branches and sitting on one with her legs dangling.

"Here, paint me like this!" she said, switching to press her back against the trunk of the tree. She turned her head and bent a knee, placing her arm on it in a relaxed way.

"Okay." Wally said easily. He lifted his brush and began to paint. Slow, long strokes followed by shorter ones, then some soft pats and then more long strokes. It didn't take long before Izabel felt herself growing bored. Wasn't being someone's muse supposed to be fun and exciting? All she was doing was sitting there!

Izabel spoke up.

"Is it done yet?"

"No." Wally replied, tipping his head to look up at here. His expression was still the same, eyelids drooping and smile gentle.

"Ughhhh-- come oooonnn, I'm getting bored over here!" she said, huffing and dropping her head.

Wally laughed, three short exhalations.

"Painting takes time. To capture an image... you need to be patient."

His expression grew the slightest bit sharper.

"Both the painter and the muse."

Izabel huffed once more, but she relented.

"Fine! Fine. I'll wait."

"Thank you. Your patience is... appreciated."

Wally dabbed his paintbrush on his palette and continued to paint. Izabel, true to her word, reverted back to her reclined position. She frowned, then stuck out her tongue, then crossed her eyes before eventually relaxing her face.

Without much else to look at, Izabel watched Wally instead. He was a swell fella, wasn't he? Calm and kind, even to a stranger such as herself. He looked perfectly content with her sudden interruption and idea, simply happy to be painting.

Wally continued to do as such, dipping his brush into his palette or the water cup beside his stool, occasionally switching brushes too. Izabel found herself following the slight movements of his hands, the way his eyes switched from the canvas, to her, and back again. Eventually, though, Wally stood up from his stool and set his tools down.

"It's done." he said easily, and Izabel was grateful to be able to finally jump off the branch and stretch. The bark of the tree had not been forgiving to her felt.

"Awesome! Lemme see it!" she exclaimed, skipping over and whirling around to face the easel. Her bright, overconfident smile dropped slightly as she took in the painting-- now face to face with herself. Or, rather, a reflection of herself through Wally's eyes.

"Wow! That really looks like me!" she exclaimed.

"Of course."

Wally leaned towards Izabel, eyes lidded and mouth curled in a warm smile as he tilted his head up at her.

"You are very lovely to paint... I hope you know that."

Izabel found herself stunned silent for a moment, unsure of how to respond. Was that an insult? No, there's no way it could be. Wally looked completely sincere, even if he said it in such a monotonous voice. Izabel felt a warmth blossom in her chest, which she quickly squashed before replying.

"Well-- Of course I am! Glad you noticed." she said, giving the smaller puppet a wink.

"You may have been slower than a sloth, but at least you paint well!"

Wally looked confused at that.

"I'm... Slower than a sloth? Can sloths paint?" he asked-- and this time it was her turn to laugh, feeling a genuine smile crease her felt. What a silly guy!

The two of them spent the rest of the afternoon together, turning from new acquaintances to fast friends. And when it was time for her to go, Wally hung the painting of her up on the wall next to the ones of all his friends in Home. Izabel felt that warm feeling in her chest again as he did so.

She was definitely going to visit Home again soon.

Hi neighbors, I really hate to do this- but my family and I are facing eviction, and we desperately need help.

We're struggling to keep food in the house, and while I’ve been doing everything I can to get back on my feet after losing my job, it hasn’t been enough. The place I worked at was sold to a massive church and everyone was let go- the severance pay was almost nothing. I'm currently waiting for my license in the mail so I can begin a new job, but it’s taking time.

My parents aren’t contributing financially. My mom relies on her Etsy shop, and while I support her art, it hasn’t been sustainable. My dad has been focused on crypto and AI art, but hasn’t had a stable income either- and I’m not in a position to confront him due to a difficult and traumatic relationship. Our roommate doesn’t help with rent, and my brother only contributes when it benefits him.

At the same time, I’ve been trying to look after my 10-year-old sister. She and I have been neglected for most of our lives- homeschooled without real structure, no consistent health care, and very limited social interaction. It breaks my heart. I want to get her into school, make sure she’s healthy, and give her the support she deserves.

If I end up needing to move out of state, I may seek legal guardianship so I can take her with me and build a better life for both of us.

I’ve closed commissions for now until we’re in a more stable place, but I’m humbly asking for any help you can give- whether it’s a donation or simply sharing this around. I don’t have a GoFundMe (I don't have a bank account), but I do have a Ko-fi if you'd like to help that way.

Percy Jackson was created with the purpose of personifying outcasts who are criminalized on baseless contradictory and discriminatory assumptions,accusations and rethoric.In other words,reactionary politics towards minorities.Percy is canonically neurodivergent,mentally ill and poor,shown through explicit adhd and dyslexia,implied bpd and ptsd and raised in a lowrent urban apartment complex in El Barrio,Manhattan,New York.Due to the last point and Percy's personal experiences and mannerisms and habits and interests,it's popular to interpret Percy as afrolatino by death of the author and i absolutely agree Percy is black-coded as a black woman who's always seen himself in Percy and knows so many other black people who relate to Percy as well and even people who know Pjo purely via cultural osmosis share the same opinion thanks to knowing the basics of Percy's character.But i've always had an additional view on Percy that really tied it all together to me,that felt like Percy at the fullest

Her status as a 'man' is obligatory in her mind,something she sees as her default on no reason other than she is amab and finds no joy in.Multiple scenes indicate her gender presentation is a performance she puts on to fit in and not be made fun of and as self-propection.Her usual outfits are her Camp Half-Blood t-shirt,jeans and sneakers and sometimes a blue hoodie.Inspite of this,she's also punk and could very easily just go to thrift stores and learn diy to dress the part and we're shown she thinks punk fashion is cooler than her canon style and that Percy is insecure in her apperance,thus comes the logical conclusion she wears baggy gender neutral clothes to downplay her dysphoria and feels bad thinking she can't 'pull off' femininine aesthetics.She expresses basically the same idea in her narration in regards to gender,that she is 'an idiot boy who dosen't understand women' yet we clearly see this isn't the case in her interactions with and relathionships to the other women in the series,a stand out example occuring as she muses over 'not knowing how talk to girls' even though she had more female friends than male ones(the gender ratio evenend out in Hoo).Times she dosen't actually understand for real are ones refering to cisheteronormativity and faux-feminism,not girlhood itself

She loves women,as people,their beauty,the bits and nooks that come with womanhood.Very purposefully,she was written as in awe of and admiring female characters both romantically and platonically and them being girls specifically is a part of it proven by patterns and terms used.She never shows aversion to lack of masculinity,Clarisse calls her 'Prissy' to emasculate her yet she never tells her to stop,she takes no problem with Grover's 'wimp' status,she refuses to live up to the ideallic 'real man' a signficant amount of the cast attempt to turn her into.In fact,Percy resisting against male expectations and rejecting her 'destiny' coming with a lot of toxic masculinity to it is half the first series' themes

There is fantastical evidence Percy is an egg,three pieces of it to boot!(Motherfuck the big three,it's just big she!).The Titan's Curse revolved around Percy proving herself unlike men to The Hunters of Artemis,a female exclusive transfem and woc inclusive group that in the context of greek mythology and ancient greek culture are slang for lesbians and formed to protect women from the patriarchy,and she succeeded in a surprisingly well-written way.She was setup as a red herring(or would she be a blueback herring? /silly)for The Hero of The Great Prophecy despite fufilling every requirement for it in five books and for four years straight and the prophecy used male pronouns for The Hero.And The Amazons,another historical mythological wlw group,respected her after she proved herself to them too

Further into these,near the end of the same Amazons featuring book,a little New Rome girl says she wants to be Percy Jackson when she grows up and Hazel aka baby transbian supreme,who spent the previous parts of the installment bonding with Percy and recovering her lost to misogynoir and adultification trauma childhood largely getting adopted and befriended by her,responds 'That's a good thing to be' and the HOA centric book played Percy and Thalia who is quite transfem-coded in her own equal right but in a butch/stud flavour to contrast Percy's femme swag as so similar they ended up clashing until they worked together on Percy's girl quest and found common ground and started bickering as close friends rather than the petty conflict from before and this one is a silly joke but in a sidebook,them ft.Nico go out for cheeseburgers in the middle of the night and the alt clocky trans audhd friend group vibes went crazy.Speaking of Nico and Percy talk i.e the best subject in 'Percy and male characters' schoolastics,Nico's feelings towards Percy absolutely further prove her tgirl swag and as a really good bonus,matches her to his tboy swag.We love transgender found siblings🩶

Nico is stated to have been attracted to Percy based on idealizing her as a man she isn't,never was,dosen't want to be and never will or could be.But he cares for her outside of it and thinks positively of her no matter how much he tried to hate her as much as he hated himself and they genuinely enjoy hanging out and can be good for eachother when his misdirected crush isn't ruining them and this is the sole reason they couldn't be as close as they wanted to be.Percy feels the need to look out for and be there for Nico on natural protective and nurturing instincts she developed as a defense mechanism and passed down to her by Sally's raising respectively and she does NOT hate him nor resent him

They act like a regular eldest daughter and middle brother as much as comes with their trauma and i'm VERY weirded out at the insinuation Percy getting annoyed with her kid brother/pseudo-son figure and keeping it to herself to not hurt his feelings and lashing out against him once when she was fifteen over a confusion that made her think he set her up to be deadass tortured and murdered means she's abusive to him.Both of them did nothing wrong and deserved to not be world's apart but not in heart any longer than they were forced to and the year skip inbetween Botl and Tlo was the perfect opportunity to fill in the gaps,by which i mean they should've spent it reconnecting and acting like best friends forever.Nico and Percy were eachother's whole world and their heart to heart set to blue birthday cake and Percy's punk rock music tastes was the start of something old yet something new.They're family by choice,not by half their blood,and Percy is the mom to Nico Sally was to her and that Maria could've been to him and she noticed this in his intro book as she fussed over him and what he was wearing(his Capture The Flag armor and she said she 'sounded like her mom')

Percy and Sally stood against The Man with only themselves to hold for the longest time.Against society,against men in power and against the monster in their home present long before Hades sent a Fury Percy's way.Sally started cooking blue food as a symbol of resistance at their at-home monster telling her no such thing was possible,blue in their culture representative of masculinity and maleness yet to Percy,blue is an inherent connection to femininity and motherhood in the face of male abuse and a system that wants her to leave everything making her who she is so she can be 'normal'.Normalcy has never been an option nor a grantable wish for Percy.She is unable to even act normal and she dosen't even 'look' normal according to mortals and most of book cast.It varies wether it's insulting her or finding her attractive and i want to point a very specific eyebrow raising example:Piper's first in-person meeting description of Percy

It got her thrown a hatewave by basic Pjo fans but along with the hilarity of the contrast to hers and the ones by others and applying her eventual comphet lesbian arc,it strikes very strongly as accidental commentary on how Percy is percieved as a lot more masculine than she actually is,Piper was a baby butch in her introduction and is a brown native/cherokee woman so ofc she is a good person to take into account's thoughts on gender and the intersectionalism of it in the eyes of white cultures vs cultures of color and cishet gender standards vs queer gender standards.She took in her apperance and didn't get what the (implied cishet!) kids at their camp meant by how 'manly' Percy Jackson is in their eyes and in terms of masculinity,said she's 'Unimpressive' and the 'Well' acompanied by various period pre-the descriptor that launched a thousand pick mes was giving she wasn't insulting her but simply found her not suited to her taste i.e Piper is butch4butch and she's based asf for it.Quite sad their contrasts weren't expanded on,Piper and Percy would've been an iconic 'tomboy and girly girl friendship but they're both baddies' duo :/ In our hearts Percy taught Piper to skateboard and shares her blue snacks with her and Piper's surfer girl status inspired Percy to join the swim team at Goode High in her senior year and Piper used her unwanted knowledge of how to present femininely to lend Percy a hand and goes without saying she's a trans girl as well.Piper's audhd transfem tomboy swag is so good and her haters are just mad she did all the stuff white girl protagonists of the time did but as a woc and not a sidelined sidekick

Percy is percieved as a cis man and it impacts the in-universe treatment of her by the narrative and the rest of the characters.Percy is viewed as threatning and imposing on the basis she is amab and looks it as a result of still not cracking and needing to refuse herself stealth to not destroy her self-esteem worse than ever.Percy also looks exactly like Poseidon and is afraid she'll turn into her father as she grows older and she's objectively a lot like him except she lacks the male part.As the gender and the social class and the oppression fixation.Like her transfeminine gender writings,Percy won't ever be the kind of person to sellout and give up on her anarchistic nature to gain strength and powerful titles geared into the system as concretely proven by fantastical elements-She didn't one time even vaguely consider taking Zeus' Master Bolt and Hades' Helm of Darkness in Tlt and it is alluded to godly items carry proporties tempting anyone near them to take them for their own gain and a canonical Kane Chronicles crossover short story shows us Percy is immune to direct corruptive influence by gods too without even needing to try to resist,because they simply don't work on her at all.An overarching constant theme to Percy is she's not what people think of her or mold her to be,to harm her or in an incorrect image of who Percy is.The gods' abuse of her was to harm her and turn her into them and Nico and the half-blood campers misenterpretation of Percy was mythologizing her although obviously they genuinely love her and had good intentions

But she's not a hero,because calling yourself a hero makes you self-mythologizing and she's a heroine,because her heroism ties to the transfeminine and the unmasculine.Percy's full birth name is Perseus,a name brought on in hopes of her achiving a positive sort of classical masculinity in her heroic tactics and adventures and Percy hates it as she perfers a gender neutral nickname and the ones who adress Percy by her complete first name consist solely of her enemies and if you think about it,'Perseus' can easily be thought of as using Percy's boy name over the name she goes by and tons of irl fems regardless of agab share the name Percy and consider it unconventionally girly.Fittingly enough,Percy qualifies for 'unconventionally girly' and Persephone exists in her universe,Persephone is also a can-be-shortend-to-Percy name and she likes her since she's different from male half-bloods.'The sea does not like to be restrained' rings off the same vibes as Persephone's versatile personality,powers and lore so it would be the perfect new name for Percy and a good reason to have them bond as a solid explaination to her chosen name.'Perse' is a greek names moniker translating to 'Destroyer' so insert obligatory clever and original joke involving Percy realistically listening to My Chemical Romance/Mcr and the song Destroya

Rachel and Percy are hard to not buy as two queer girls who'd never been close to another queer girl before and forming a two peas in a pod dynamic to cope with the struggles coming with it.Y'all love queer-coded m/f until the queer-coding is they're not m/f and i mean romantic shipping AND platonic shipping.Demonizing and mocking Rachel is fucking heinous and reflective of the widespread internalized misogyny in the Pjo fanbase.Her feelings for Percy weren't one-sided,they were either NO sided or Percy was the one-sided crusher.It was honestly hard to tell and it enchances their art hoe frizzy activist neurotic lesbian and jaded alternative hardcore with a sweet and gooey inside trans team mom subtext as 'do i want her or are we just a special type of attached?' is a near universal wlw/transfem besties experience.Rachel is one of the most interesting,complex and underrated members of the Percyverse lineup and added actual queer-coding to Percy on top of how good she is to her and their off the charts organic chemistry,not assaulting her and saying creepy weird shit to her like the fugly raggedy dudes y'all gaslight yourselves into thinking were flirting with her or that she was into it and then entered mass hysteria when the official website called her 'tragically straight'.Y'all are corny AND dogs,that's how lame you are.Rachel Elizabeth Dare 5ever and i bet she beats people up for dissing Percy and has done her own studies on transmisogyny to do transfeminist acitivism and none asking was needed on Miss Jackson's part

Notably,Percy is a sea type mc and you'll notice they usually tend to be intentionally female by their creators as the sea is the element of femininity.Folklore,religion and mythology present water motifs,powers and aesthetics as a part of women and their genders culturally across a veryyyyyyy numerous part of the world.Combined with Percy's refusal of masculinity and parting of manhood as a concept in every form minus default gender for personal safety and trauma not letting her think too hard on how to uncover and create her own personhood outside of what everybody else needs(or 'needs',according to their personal blights and disregardment of Percy's feelings for their own benefactoring,emotional or structural),sea based femininity is perfect for Percy and it's an 'huh....well,would you look at that.bizzarely feels intentional' moment connecting the dots between Percy's accidental trans woman narrative and basically all the other major players in 2000s-2010s sea type fiction being unambigiously women.Add her to the club,she missed out on signups but they're always accepting new members

Her singing voice is bad according to a bunch of judgemental campers but we don't get a followup to prove it and she's the daughter of the sea god so it's more likely her allegedly 'ugly' singing is just non-transfems bullying her over sounding 'weird',her white streak can function as a twist on the 'alt girl with unnaturally colored hair streaks' and a pun by saying she has a supernaturally colored streak in her hair,she's a superhero comics nerd who read the Guardians Of The Galaxy comics before the Mcu got their hands on them and throws Superman and Spiderman refs like the dorkgirl she is,she crashed out and leaned on extensive Animal Crossing time,she's audhd and the autism is undiagnosed and dismissed as 'he's built different than other guys,he's just one of the good ones' yet belittled and weaponized against her and given backhanded compliments nonstop,she's a punk rocker babe,her reputation is bad and her street cred is endless,she loves greasy fast food and 'childish' desserts/sweets,her sense of humor is rooted in soothing physical pain from beatings and emotional pain from violent words,she's a mama's girl and her mama's girl and a deadbeat daughter to her deadbeat dad and an eldest sister to her Peanut(Tyson)and her Little Man(Nico)and her Hazelnut(Hazel)and her Destello(Estelle),she's mean and wears her heart on her sleeve but she had to be and her screams came to be and don't cease yet she refused to leave and she's not as she seems to have been deemed

Percy Jackson is an outcast,a misfit,an innocent,an instigator,an exception,a punk,normies' worst nightmare,weirdos' favorite person and the gods' marytr.She was created on the purpose of paragoning all this too.She's as deep as the entire sea,she IS the sea and we call the sea 'she'.Percy is the sea,it runs coursing through her blood and she is a half-blood through Poseidon but she's a girl because she's Percy Jackson.She didn't want to be a half-blood and she didn't mean for her nose to bleed out for Gaea but at the end of it all,she can choose all she wanted.Everything would come to her in peace and fall to pieces she asked to be given in her hands if she let go of trying to be a good son and 'Percy Jackson' meant 'Ocean Girl'

i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:

"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.

an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.

You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.

If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.
