Thinking about the fact that Tyrion suffers from chronic pain but if we didn't have his pov we would never know because he never says a word about it and none of the other characters seem to be aware of it either. They can see he has difficulty walking but have no idea how bad it actually is for him.

Oof when he finds out he lost his son is lost to him too all that careful planning for revenge and justice for his sister his niece and nephew to try and make sure as few people suffer and die as possible and yet it didn't work for his own son Doran is one of my fave characters I hope we get more of him someday but all that sacrifice for nothing like sending his son away drove a huge wedge between him and his wife and even Arianne for different reasons but now thankfully she knows the truth and she and her father and growing back together but still

Reading Arianne’s winds chapter and it just reminded me how sad Doran is

jon did not tell stannis “I have a name” for people to say that he’s going to end up as jon stark or jon targaryen or whatever else. his name is jon SNOW. it doesn’t matter if he is or isn’t *actually* a bastard. he was raised as a bastard, he’s been discriminated against as a bastard, he climbed his way up in the world despite his status as a bastard, his acceptance of society’s “others” stems from his experiences as a bastard. how could he ever not be jon snow? his bastardy has shaped everything about who he is, no matter what the technical circumstances of his birth are. the world believes him to be a bastard, and so that’s his reality. like we obviously recognize that the whole idea of trueborns vs bastards is socially constructed, so (inheritance issues aside) why are we so obsessed with proving that jon isn’t *really* a bastard? will being trueborn fundamentally change who he is? will it cancel out a lifetime of being treated like a second-class citizen? will it make him more/less of a stark or a targaryen?

like there’s a reason that asoiaf has an ongoing theme of “knowing your name”, particularly in adwd (the same book that we get the “I offered you a name” // “I have a name” exchange). jon knows his name, he’s actively claiming it, he’s giving it power. he is a SNOW. come on even mormont’s raven knows that.

Rereading a Bran chapter because I love him so much, and this passage always gets me. He's such a sweet and loving child!!!

The serving men brought every dish to Bran first, that he might take the lord’s portion if he chose. By the time they reached the ducks, he could eat no more. After that he nodded approval at each course in turn, and waved it away. If the dish smelled especially choice, he would send it to one of the lords on the dais, a gesture of friendship and favor that Maester Luwin told him he must make. He sent some salmon down to poor sad Lady Hornwood, the boar to the boisterous Umbers, a dish of goose-in-berries to Cley Cerwyn, and a huge lobster to Joseth the master of horse, who was neither lord nor guest, but had seen to Dancer’s training and made it possible for Bran to ride. He sent sweets to Hodor and Old Nan as well, for no reason but he loved them.

and this reminded me of my other favorite Bran moment when he's on the run with Hodor, Jojen, and Meera and they run into a Liddle in the woods:

Bran saw the orange glow of fire farther back and realized they were not alone. “Come in and warm yourselves,” a man’s voice called out. “There’s stone enough to keep the rain off all our heads.” He offered them oatcakes and blood sausage and a swallow of ale from a skin he carried, but never his name; nor did he ask theirs. Bran figured him for a Liddle.

When they woke the next morning, the fire had gone out and the Liddle was gone, but he’d left a sausage for them, and a dozen oatcakes folded up neatly in a green and white cloth. Some of the cakes had pinenuts baked in them and some had blackberries. Bran ate one of each, and still did not know which sort he liked the best. One day there would be Starks in Winterfell again, he told himself, and then he’d send for the Liddles and pay them back a hundredfold for every nut and berry.

possibly the greatest asoiaf moment ever is when jon gets the letter about bran waking up and mormont expects him to grieve because “sorry kid :( it’s actually bad news :( he’s never going to walk again :(” but jon is all like “my brother is going to live !!!” and then he races out of the room and tells everyone he passes that “my brother is going to live !!!” and he gets back to the common hall and picks tyrion up and spins him around and makes him read the letter too because “my brother is going to live !!!” and he’s so giddy that he befriends grenn and tells thorne to go fuck himself and then everybody laughs and jon is just so happy because “my brother is going to live !!!”

meanwhile bran is back in winterfell listening to robb’s bannermen whisper about how death is a kinder fate than his, how they should’ve just let him die, how he’s too broken to be alive—with no idea that his big brother is out there celebrating because bran is going to LIVE !!!

To me that's why Barristan is such a breath of fresh air surrounding Dany. Especially in contrast to Jorah. Like Barristan and Jorah both see the woman they love (or in Jorah's case in my opinion lusted after but didn't truly love or know, his wife) and like with Jorah he just wants Dany sexually (at least to me and maybe as a tool to get back 'what's his by rights' aka bear island and all that goes with that) and wants to keep her young and innocent so he can control her in my opinion he seems to work directly in contrast to her best interests and definitely against her desires and has betrayed her since moment one. Barristan on the other hand sees some of Ashara Dayne in Dany but he thinks of Dany as the daughter Ashara may have had (or they may have had together had things been different) and he never looks at Dany in a sexual way. Barristan also sees Dany as a person like he respects her as a queen knows she's wise and world weary for her age forced to grow up too fast (though notes that she plays the young innocent when she needs to 'I'm just a young girl....') but she's still a young girl at heart too in ways (like her passions for a man like Darrio and not a man like Quentin) but like Barristan really does respect Dany as Queen thinks she's an incredible one at that and worries for her ultimately I think Barristan wants to serve Dany bc she's a good Queen above everything else and despite his worries for her he respects her agency like with her overextending herself holding audience with her subjects (i find it sweet that he had cushions placed on her bench for her when he couldn't convince her to take on less duties and care for herself as well which made Dany happy in an amused way that he took her joke so seriously and tried to help) Barristan also refuses to believe she's dead and worries about what Dany will think of his actions when she comes back and hopes he's doing right by her and works hard to train future knights and possible Queensgaurds for her and riding her Silver into battle knowing it will give her people heart but worrying about the presumption of doing so and a lot more I think Barristan despite not having a window into her innermost thoughts like we the readers do seems to understand and respect Dany more than most readers do and he never once sexualizes her but I do think he doesn't see Dany as someone he can shape into a great leader but rather he sees Dany as a good leader already who will grow into a great leader and one he not only must serve but wants to serve and takes pride in serving I think he does know she's not had the education or information that growing up in Westeros would have provided her (a lot of rose colored stories from her brother and then some info from Jorah and while Dany has been wise from day one about people and that things aren't like what she's probably been told she does have some blind spots even in the stories she's heard from her brother about her own family vrs the ones Barristan tells her but she is wise enough to take in new info and shift her perspective on things as well) but I do hate just how many people around Dany either want to use her (and her dragons) or want her sexually (and oftentimes both) her chapters are so hard for me to read for a lot of reasons but specifically just how gross people are around her and I'm not saying she's perfect either she's done some things that i hate but for what she's been through she's managed to really hang onto her innate kindness but also her duty as a ruler not the rights due her as one and somehow her sanity as well but her and Sansa's chapters with the sexual violence and sexualization by the people around them make me want to scream

Do you ever think about how when older men look at Jon they see a surrogate son who they can shape into a great leader, but when they look at Dany they see a sex object who can be their fantasy girlfriend
