Tales and Travels
@wildernessinman
Akosua, despite having only spent a matter of weeks in France, had fallen in love with the country. There were so many things to experience, things she could have never imagined. Fountains flowing with water as clear as the river below and petticoats to be worn under every dress. She still stressed the norm of the country by showing her midriff and sometimes more of her chest and back than people were used to. She was not accustomed to so much clothing when it wasn’t even that hot out!
Today, Akosua found herself in one of the smaller squares of the city. Surrounded by bustling citygoers and tradesmen, she had been drawn out of the crowd and to the side of the fountain where she could rest her feet. The cobblestones were nasty to her well worn but accustomed to dirt feet. Spying the sparkling and moving waters, she smirked and pried off her uncomfortable shoes and plopped her feet down in the cool fountain. Completely unaware that no one else seemed to be doing this and, for the time being, no one was stopping her. So she sat, sighing at the cool water on her toes and leaned back against the edge fo the fountain with a soft smile.

The Sunflower
❛ As bright as the sun and about twice as deadly ❜
Full Name Akosua “Aki” Boateng Age Twenty-Four Alliance Akan Tribe of the Asanti Empire Position Foreign Diplomat and Potential Wife of the King Oti Akenten Negative Traits Vengeful, Naïve, Stubborn Positive Traits Vivacious, Curious, Independent
Twenty-four years ago, Akosua was born as the fifth daughter of a farming family in the Asanti Empire of Ghana. The Asanti Empire was bred from war and rose from the ashes of a conquered territory along the ivory coast. The future country of Ghana was separated into warring territories who sought to control lands and the people within other clans. While their primary export was ivory, the territories would often capture villages and sell the inhabitants off as slaves to Europeans or to other African clans. Before Asantehene Akenten, the King of the Asanti Empire, rose against the invaders to his territory, the empire was in shambles and controlled by the warring clans within it’s borders. King Akenten saw a brighter future for the country and decided to unite the clans in order to rise above their neighbors and make something of themselves.
Akosua “Aki” Boateng was born during this shift of power and thinking within the Empire. Her parents knew very little of the political shift but they were thankful that they no longer had to worry about their home being invaded and their children being taken from them. Because of this gratitude, the family was fiercely loyal to the serving King. Also, because of their closeness to the palace, her father volunteered to be one of the guards at his home. Akosua was named for the day on which she was born; such is tradition within the Asanti Empire. The emphasis on someone’s heritage comes from the mother’s surname and all importance is placed on her family. The Boateng family were proud people with fierce ancestral worship with a focus on Akosua’s great grandmother, Afia, who has lead Aki through her life. Within her home, ancestral worship is a pivotal point for her faith and it established a moral construct for the Akan people within the empire.
Akosua’s childhood was a calm one with pure memories and many friends made along the way. She was educated in the ways of farming by her mother and worked with her seven brothers and sisters to tend to the lands and livestock while their father was serving in the nearby capital. Even as a child, she showed a vivacious personality with a thirst for knowledge. She was constantly asking questions about how things worked and why things happened the way they did. Her favorite question was simply “why?”. Sometimes it would drive her mother mad but Aki could not contain her curiosity. It was this same curiosity that put her on the path to coming to France.
After she’d hit puberty, her parents had begun the search for a suitable husband for their final daughter. She was the last in a line of five to marry and the prospective suitors were wearing thin. One day, her mother had sent her to gather her father from the palace to return home with a few goods from another village. She’d been spotted at the palace by the noble King Oti Akenten. Once he introduced himself, she knelt on the ground but the King was surprisingly generous and told her to stand. Not only did he find her remarkably beautiful, he found her very interesting and decided to ask her father if he could have her as a wife. Her father was rightfully dumbfounded by agreed for his youngest daughter to enter as one of the many women who he would potentially take on as a wife in the coming years.
Within days, Aki had moved into the palace and settled into palace life. Learning from the other women about different villages, politics, handsome guards, diplomats from other countries, and especially the people who would float in and out of the palace. The diplomats and dignitaries were always of special interest to Aki. They were so intelligent and knowledgeable about things that she would never see. Their worlds were so forbidden to her but she couldn’t help her curiosity. One such diplomat intrigued her the most. A man from Spain with a thick accent, an unruly moustache and a rivaled curiosity about the young, brown, curvaceous woman who would always ask him questions in her tongue about his own life. The man, with a bit of an unhealthy idea about the woman, decided to invest in her. He helped to teach her French and Spanish, while broadening their horizons. They remained close friends for many years as he would come and go from the palace. Through their encounters and others in between, Aki becam fluent in Asanti-Twi, French, Spanish, and Bur from the northern Ghanian clans. With the barrier of language broken down, she was able to meet more people, translate for the king, and establish her necessary seat at the palace. No other wife before her had shown such a tenacity for communicating with other people and the King noticed.
On the eve of the summer solstice, a European diplomat had visited the King to report some trading information. The King had learned of a gap within western Europe where traded has lessened and searched for someone to visit the countries to form an alliance and strengthen trading ties with the leaders. Upon hearing of the opportunity, Aki presented herself to the King with an excited and optimistic view of the world. The King hesitated to send her to another country but her past with foreign diplomats was impeccable and she was one of the only people in his palace that could speak their language so well. With a group of guards in tow, she was granted permission to travel to Europe.
Connections
Marie Duval — While she had been attempting to find someone to help her with her fashion statement on France, she’d run into the seamstress’ shop with a pretty huge job for her. After she’d explained her situation, she’d learned that she liked the young seamstress’ personality and hoped to become friends.
Alexandre Valois — Her placement as a Diplomat within this country has placed her on the doorstep of the King. While in his company, she found that she not only enjoyed his outlook on royal life but she enjoyed the grounds of the palace. The royal court functioned very differently than her homeland’s did and she could not contain her curiosity when around the young king.
Santiago De La Roche — There were many foreigners in this country but she felt the most akin to the explorer Santiago. She also loved hearing his stories from his times abroad. She is sure she will annoy him with her questions one of these days but that doesn’t seem to stop her.
This character is portrayed by AJA NAOMI KING and is TAKEN
