FF7 Remake ~ Translation Matters (19) - “You can’t fall in love with me” and all the 大切’s in the world.

We originally watched the Tifa cut-scene (when they hug in the garden) so I was very pleasantly surprised when the youtube video I’ve been watching for Japanese audio played the Aerith cut-scene. It was SOOOOO beautiful and sad and the music was amazing. I’m happy to finally watch it but oh god, the whole thing is heart breaking.  Though…some nitpicky crap, of course. 

Aerith’s speech begins, “Everyone dies eventually. So we need to make the most of the time we have - to live our lives the way we wanna live.” Then she says… Aerith Jpn: 一瞬 この一瞬を大切に Eng sub: Every minute…every moment, matters. My trans: Every single moment, this moment…cherish them.

Cloud says: Jpn: この一瞬を大切にだろう。 Eng sub: You need to embrace this moment. Right? Comment: Japanese Aerith actually makes a point to specify THIS moment and not the generic “every minute, every moment.” THIS very moment when the two of them are together. Cloud echoes this statement so let them agree that this very goddamn moment is precious! They repeat the key 大切に, which I’ll talk about below.  

But don’t fall in love with me because Jpn: もしそうなっても　気のせいだよ  Eng sub: Even if you think you have…it’s not real. My trans: Eeven if you think you have…it’s just your imagination.   Comment:  Cloud has a screwed up mind where he hallucinates a dead man following him, has false memories and identity, and is having this strange dream that may not be just a dream where he is told that his feelings (while they may be truly felt) are also “just his imagination.” It fits better and still gives some credence to Cloud’s feelings. 気 is one of those culturally specific words that crop up in a hundred different phrases. I wonder if it is the Japanese equivalent of Chinese “chi”? Basically, you can clump it under mind, heart, feeling, mood, etc. Kind of like the energy of the world. I don’t mean this in a woo woo sense because it is used in all kinds of normal, everyday expressions and words. Like 気持ち (feeling) is literally “holding a ki.”   気がする = ki is doing something => I feel like… 気を付ける = stick your ki on => pay attention 気になる = ki is starting up => something is bothering me/on my mind 気に入る = ki is going into something => I like it  気のせい = blame is on my ki => I had a feeling about this but I guess I just imagined it as it turns out, there is no material, real thing for real in reality. Like my love for you.  

Cloud says he is coming to save her. Jpn: 悔しいけど　うれしい Eng sub: If that’s what you want. Thank you.  My trans: It is frustrating (that you have to do that) but it makes me happy. Comment: I have no idea why they changed Aerith’s words so much here. The emotion behind it is totally emptied out! 

Really quick though. It is interesting to see the same word 大切 (important, precious, critical) be translated different ways depending on the context. When Sepia-world little Aerith tells Elmyra that her 切な人 has died, it is translated as a “man you really, really love.” 

When flash-back-never-aging Tseng pops up at the door to remind Aerith that she is a 大切な child, it is translated as “you’re not just any little girl” (aka you are special). So when Aerith first asked Cloud if Tifa wasn’t an important person to him (大切な人）covered briefly here, your fanon can re-translate that as “Tifa is someone who is really, really loved” or Tifa isn’t “just any little girl.” When Cloud tells Aerith that he will indeed treat this dream moment as 大切に, your fanon can re-translate that as you desire too.

I don’t know why it bothers me, but it does. It just makes me sad that people take Cloud’s dancing away from Aerith. That boy did not dance his ass off on that stage for anyone but Aerith.

He was absolutely ready to throw hands to get off that stage, but as soon as he spots Aerith cheering him on, he’s changed his mind, and he dances. This was all Aerith’s idea. Not Cloud’s, not Tifa’s. Of course he wouldn’t have just left Tifa. He probably would have stormed into Corneo’s, buster sword in hand, but this was Aerith’s idea, and he went along with it for her.

I mean, come on! Look at that face! He was ready to run and when he sees Aerith, he drops his shoulders and sighs and gives her an annoyed look that says, “Seriously? You want me to do this?” And when he turns back to Andrea, suddenly inspired to do his best, the boy nails it, for Aerith.
