kageyama knows why [name] fell out of love with the sport, even if she never explicitly stated it. he watched over the phone over days, weeks, months, as she lost the passion for it. and he wouldn’t forgive the guy who did that.

it took a lot to get [name] to agree to be a manager, though she wouldn’t have it any other way now. her favorite part is getting to force everyone to listen to her music (especially when she gets into a new artist or there’s a new album drop).

nishinoya, even if he doesn’t seem like it, has quite a bit of money to throw around. he usually spends it on the team or uses it to buy ice cream at the convenience store. though 9/10, he would never let you pay because that’s the type of person his mom raised him to be.

posting again at 4 am so i won't forget LOL.. anyways im almost done with s4 and the miya twins r so silly (even if they're on my last nerve). anyways i've started to write court swap and i swear it's gonna get better.. soon

LOVE OF THE GAME

to understand

chapter warnings: jelli continues to choose to write at 6 am, no beta we die like deadchi, oikawa haterism. this is kind of a recap of last chapter but goes more in-depth about what happened and oikawa’s personal thoughts.

the evening went more eventful than you expected; you thought you’d be working on your assignments quietly in your room while the four did whatever monday nights entail for them. what actually happened was that your homework was sprawled across the dining table, as the three third-years were looking over your assignments.

“i don’t remember having to do any of this…” makki mumbled under his breath, his brows furrowed. his face was a mix of concentration and confusion, something that matsu shared as he was looking over his shoulder. iwaizumi, on the other hand, was looking for the nintendo switch controllers and setting up the game on the tv. you would’ve expected oikawa to be home and hosting them, though he was nowhere to be seen. he hadn’t said anything to you either, though you figured he wouldn’t care about letting his teammates into his flat.

makki set the notebook back down on the desk in defeat, moving his chair so he was facing the tv while still sitting at the table. even if you had known the trio for less than 48 hours, they were nothing less than kind and warm.

“do you know how to play?” matsu asked, as the other two went to scavenge in oikawa’s cabinets for snacks. luckily for them, you and oikawa had recently stocked it with chips, popcorn, basically whatever borderline unhealthy junk food a college student could desire. in his fridge was where the healthier option hid, though neither of you have prepped any actual meals.

“no, i never really got into video games,” you lamented. a lot of your time had been spent on things like studying or the occasional volleyball game. truly, you did consider trying out for the women’s team here. both your brother and nishinoya said that you could make the team. something held you back though: fear? a falling-out-of-love for the sport? lack of interest? even you couldn’t place your finger on it, though you didn’t have the time to consider it either.

“we could teach you, especially iwa. he’s a natural at most games we play,” matsu grinned. the sound of popping filled the apartment as the microwave ran. the other two discussed oikawa’s location, glancing at their find-my app. “how much longer til the captain’s here?”

“loserkawa should be incoming soon,” iwa responded, makki being the one to take the popcorn out and put it in the bowl. as everyone began to settle down, the door slammed open.

“you can’t all just waltz into my apartment and act like it’s yours!” oikawa exclaimed, adjusting his glasses on his face. it was the first time you saw him with them on, it was a different look for him. yet he still looked like the idol the school made him out to be. it wasn’t any secret why so many girls at school fawned over this version of him.

the next couple of hours were loud; from smash, to overcooked, to mario party. it was a bit concerning how many games oikawa had, especially since most had little to no completion. “i bought them for game night,” he explained when you asked, though some didn’t even look like they had been installed yet.

eventually the night grew quieter, with only the clicking of buttons filling the air. when the promotional picture had released, you were already in your room.

“seriously, i get she’s the manager,” oikawa spoke, keeping his voice low. it was just barely loud enough for his friends to hear. “i don’t know how someone could be okay with auctioning a date with their own boyfriend.”

“we know, we saw your tweet,” makki responded, his eyes closed as he was laying on the couch. though the four didn’t speak, they were coming to their own conclusions about the new information thrown out.

“maybe it wasn’t her choice, that would suck though.” matsu groaned as he lost to iwaizumi once again, who hadn’t spoken a word on the situation. “though look on the bright side; maybe you’ll find a new girl to be into. or at least get some money out of your fangirls. it would be great to stay in nicer places when we travel.”

oikawa chuckled at that, he knew that wasn’t possible. even if he was compatible with the girl who won, he knew that his fangirls had an idealized vision of him. one that would drop volleyball and his dreams for them, someone that they could flaunt around. someone he wasn’t. “the day i find a girl who doesn’t get sick of my playing schedule is the day i’ll stop spending every waking hour at the gym.” he got up to go grab something from the fridge. it was much fuller than when you first arrived, now having a mix of protein options, fruit, vegetables, all that stuff coach constantly lectures the team about eating. he notices a container in the fridge, one he had no recollection of leaving in there. he reached and pulled it out, revealing it held some sliced fruit, cut by you. a note was on top:

make sure you eat and rest well! you can’t win your game if you aren’t taking care of yourself.

he paused for a second, looking at the small paper. it had been less than a week since you came into his life. the closest you two had been was sitting side by side in his car. you barely even knew anything about each other; favorite foods, middle names, your dreams, those were all facts that neither of you shared. yet even then, he couldn’t help but feel so strongly on the perceived situation. you didn’t deserve this, to deal with such a shitty boyfriend who would be okay with going on a date with another girl for fundraising. even if his former girlfriend had broken up with him for “putting a high school dream above their relationship,” he couldn’t fathom the thought of doing something like this. not to someone who kageyama should love so dearly.

even in the jealousy and envy for kageyama, he never truly thought kageyama was a bad person. but now? how was he supposed to look at someone who was treats their significant other like this?

but to iwa, who was hovering closely behind him, it finally clicked. and it wasn’t the switch controller in his hand.

if there’s one thing oikawa hates, it’s not understanding. not understanding where talent ends and effort begins, not understanding how to bring out his players potential, not understanding why his last ex was so okay leaving. not understanding why you would be so okay with your boyfriend doing something like this.

iwaizumi, makki, and matsu know this and do their best to try to stop oikawa from overworking himself to get around understanding. though this time, they aren’t sure why he cares so much. probably just because it’s oikawa and kageyama.

makki and matsu 100% let you paint their nails while they were there cause you were bored and had nothing else to do. so now they have matching pointer fingers with dark teal nail polish.

filler chapter lowkey but it’s okay we’re getting to the good part ! i promise your pain and suffering is almost over (also posted this early so i wouldn’t accidentally sleep too long and forget), enjoy my loves!
