A new Premier League season is upon us, and I’m notably less excited about it than I was last season. And the year before that. And so on.
I can’t pinpoint the predominant factor for my growing lack of interest/hype, but there are several that clearly contribute. They are thus:
I work in soccer now. The frustrating thing about working in soccer is that the soccer never stops. This summer had the Copa America, Women’s World Cup, Gold Cup, boring friendlies, the U21 Euros, and more. So it’s not like I’ve been soccer starved and am anxious for it to get back.
Newcastle have been steadily awful and uninspiring over the last 6 years. The reign of Mike Ashley has made supporting Newcastle a pretty hopeless endeavor, so forgive me for not being buzzing to watch the Wonga brigade struggle to finish mid-table for yet another season.
I’m older than I was. I generally get less excited about things in general than I used to. There are more things and they happen more frequently, so, as a result, a thing happening has proportionally less importance than my life than it used to.
Don’t get me wrong - I’m looking forward to it. I love the Premier League and I’ll still eagerly watch Match of the Day and I’ll still be infuriated when Newcastle lose to Sunderland twice. But when the soccer is always, new soccer aint special.

I like Mondays
Mondays are without a doubt ranked above middling efforts like Tuesday and Wednesday, and, although it may fall short of Saturday’s splendor, Mondays have to be considered up there with some of the absolute best days of the week.
It’s a fresh start. On Monday you get to restart all of your previous failed efforts. It’s a day of possibilities.
All of the productivity lost over the weekend is gained in an instant on Monday morning, when the week ahead offers an endless amount of opportunity. The end of the week is full of burnout, and missed chances, and failed promises to yourself. But on Monday, anything can happen.
Mondays are great, and everyone else is wrong.
I believe in myself and I can do anything.
By Friday I will be the King.
I had my friend spit in my mouth so I could develop a case of the Mondays.
I am the anti-Garfield.

“The dog days are over!”, the radio blasted, playing Florence and the Machine’s chart-topping hit.
“She’s right,” thought Rufus. He wriggled his moist nose and scratched behind his ear with his leg. Damn thing could barely reach back there anymore.
“The dog days are o-o-over!”, continued Florence.
“And they ain’t never coming back,” thought Rufus, as, paw trembling, he reached for his gun.
