How to prevent your network switch from overheating
As data is becoming critical with each passing day, so is the work of data centers to stay updated, agile, and efficient. To ensure seamless operation and reduced downtime, these evolving data centers need to maintain optimal temperature conditions. Be it servers or network switches, they need continuous monitoring due to issues with overheating.

Since overheating can lead to equipment failure, reduced performance, and increased maintenance costs. Hence, Netrack came up with a solution called the Air Diverter Kit. This innovative air diverter solution for data center ensures that the unconventional network switches and servers receive the necessary airflow to stay cool so that they can function efficiently.
Importance of efficient airflow in data centers
Poor airflow management not only increases the operational cost of the data center through unnecessary energy consumption but can also lead to premature equipment and cable failures as a result of overheating. This can eventually increase the chance of outages. Since such downtime can immensely impact the IT infrastructure hence, a comprehensive airflow management solution should be an integral part of a data center.
Efficient airflow can prevent the accumulation of hot air that can help to maintain a stable temperature. This will have a direct effect upon the cooling systems, which will work effectively to cool the equipment. Such seamless cooling will lower the operational cost of a data center. Another important aspect of an efficient airflow system is that it guarantees consistent cooling that helps to reduce any damage of the equipment, servers or network switches due to overheating.
Advantage of traditional airflow systems in servers
The servers in data centers use a front-to-rear airflow configuration. The fans in these servers draw cool air from the front, pass it over the components, and expel the hot air from the back. Such a design ensures continuous flow of fresh and cool air to the servers while removing the hot air.
Unlike servers, many network switches are designed with side-to-side airflow due to the placement of their cooling fans on the right or left side. This design creates challenges in conventional data center environments where hot air is expelled from the back of the servers. The side intake of cool air and side exhaust of hot air can disrupt the overall airflow pattern, leading to insufficient cooling and hot spots due to accumulation of hot air in certain areas, resulting in overheating.
To address such airflow challenges faced by network switches, Netrack has developed the Air Diverter Kit. This innovative product transforms non-conventional side-to-side airflow devices into conventional front-to-rear airflow devices, ensuring they receive adequate cooling.
What is the Air Diverter Kit?
Now, let’s understand the solution designed by Netrack to redirect the airflow in network switches. The kit includes a baffle, which can be equipped with or without fans. This baffle can forcefully redirect the cool air from the front of the rack to the side while removing hot air from the side exhaust to the rear of the rack. Depending on the number of switches and the cooling requirements, one can choose either a passive or an active Air Diverter Kit.
The following are the benefits of using Netrack’s solution:
Increase in cooling efficiency
Preventing overheating
Reduction in equipment failure
Easy to install
Quality product with ISO certification
Consequences of overheating and hotspots in data centers
Ignoring the cooling needs of network switches can lead to severe consequences, such as; equipment failure due to overheating. This can lead to costly downtime and repair. High temperatures can even reduce the performance of servers and switches, affecting the efficiency of the overall data center. In certain situations, overheating can result in data loss putting the business operation at risk. Hence, it can be concluded that preventing network switch overheating is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and reliability of data centers. In this regard, a proper airflow management solution like the air diverter solution for data center is essential for the long-term success and sustainability of a data center.
