As The Hammerhead Flies
1K posts
Title refers to: "as the crow flies" as a metaphor for the shortest distance between two ideas | "hitting the nail on the head", albeit obliquely | my love of hammerhead sharks | that one scene in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" where all the dolphins on earth fly away in dissatisfaction.

Man, after years of regularly visiting Shakesville while it was live (upto 2019), I just feel really deprived to see the posts go offline. It was a really valuable resource. In particular I've shared the posts about the notions of "you don't complete me" and "there are times when you have to speak, not because you want to change the other person, but when if you don't speak, they have changed you" so many times.
The internet really shouldn't become a place where people feel compelled to take their information offline for this. Let's all try a little harder to respect each other's privacy to keep things like this from becoming a concern.

"At the shows, it’s been a mixed crowd — senior citizens, young kids and everything in between — which is what it’s been for a long time." Dear reader... please take the senior citizens and young kids in your family to Opeth's shows. Do it!

a good reminder - if one supports one's local congressional primary challenger (that's how wyden-san got his start in the us house), eventually they will support one on the national political stage.

can't think of anyone who excels more at this type of strangely, beautifully tragic songwriting... see also "you oughta know" and "not as we" by her.

Contemptible and laughable. "But Democrats have to resist the temptation to say “I told you so” or “We warned you.” The worst possible way to persuade anyone to agree with you is to start out by telling them that they were wrong and you were right. Don’t try it, no matter how good it makes you feel or how many likes it gets you on social media." my foot. Foresight is a skill rightly valued for its results in guiding decisions towards better outcomes. To hide or deny the demonstrated ability to foresee is to hide or deny having a valuable skill. When I'm better at this than you are, that should be all the persuasion you need - I am not looking for other ways to persuade you that are less evidence-based and more palatable to your cloyed little palate.

it would be nice...
...to be able to say, well, we all survived from January 2017 to January 2021. But, of course, so many of us didn't, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic that ravaged the population in the absence of measures that could have protected it.
Even aside from the pandemic... a lot of us were readers of Ed Brayton and Melissa McEwan, in blog format. The latter retired from blogging out after being massively burnt out from the sheer labour of writing about events from 2017 to 2019. The former got sick to the point where he voluntarily entered hospice care, having previously noted (in November 2016) that events to come were probably going to be bad for him in light of his chronic illnesses. In light of Patreon's purge of its nonreligious blogs, his writings are no longer to be found where he put them up - for all I know, his legacy of writing is gone.
So... don't be sanguine, especially about the most vulnerable in your circles. Help proactively where you can.

dear reader...
...if you noticed the same geek at two very different concerts on two consecutive days in san francisco, headbanging and fervently accompanying the singer on stage to "i'm going to love you for a long long long long time..." as well as to "THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF FATHER, HEAR THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF FATHER" - well, that was me. any inconvenience caused is (not) regretted (in the slightest).
