How Destroying Nature Could Lead To The Loss of Agricultural Jobs for Local Farmers.
Mining has become one of the significant parts of economic growth, and has been providing us raw material for our infrastructure, product development, and giving jobs to other people. However, as mining became an important part of our economy, we can’t take a blind eye to the destruction and the loss of forest and nature, especially those targeting rural areas.
Recently I found out that a mining company has started operations in a rural area, while the company claims to have secured all necessary permits for their on-going activity, the reality is far from that.
As someone who works and an advocate for the HARIBON Foundation, I am in deep distress as the mining operations have been destroying the local ecosystem, contaminating the waterways, and impacting the agricultural livelihood of nearby communities.
It is hence our role as an environmental organization to intervene and create awareness on riparian projects and the effects of mining on the environment and life. This is an indication that the local authorities are doing very little or indifferent to the wellbeing of the environment and the people. We have an obligation to get them to take action and encourage them to do something while it is still not too late.
Besides, we also need to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the affected area for which we have to approach potential donors. The losses from the exploitation of minerals are irreversible; it will take years of endeavors to rehabilitate the landscape and replace the livelihood of the equally exploited communities. To achieve this, let us take joint efforts to mobilize required funds for initiating this significant task.
Therefore, I call on the people to take action now and act against the devastating acts of mining companies in regard to the environment and the population’s economy. I am appealing to all concerned citizens as well as any concerned organization to come forward in the awareness process and join the call to action and support rehabilitation. In this way, it is crucial to combine efforts to build a better and more sustainable world for each person.
