Essential Steps on How to Prepare for Your PTE Test
PTE (Pearson Test of English) for study abroad and immigration. It is trusted by universities, colleges and governments around the world. It is a computer- based testing and results are typically available within 48 hours of giving the test. PTE has four sections: speaking, writing, reading and listening. The test starts with an introduction of the candidate followed by the speaking and writing task. After the writing test, the candidate gets the reading section. After completing the reading section, the candidate gets an optional 10 mins break after which one has to give the last section which is listening. The total duration of the exam is 3 hours. Speaking- It has five sections viz: Read aloud, repeat sentence, describe an image, retell-lecture and answer short questions. The trick to crack this section is your fluency. Listening section – You get an optional break of 10 minutes after the reading section. The listening section comprises of 8 different topics viz: Summarize spoken text, highlight correct summary, highlight incorrect words, fill in the blanks, select missing words, multiple choice chose single option, multiple choice: choose multiple options and write from dictation. The most important topics in listening are write from dictation, summarize spoken text and fill in the blanks. We teach lot of tips and tricks to ace this section. To conclude, after completing each section, we take sectional tests and see where a candidate is lacking and then brush up on those skills. How to Prepare for the IELTS Test
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an exam for moving abroad for higher studies (IELTS Academic) or for PR purposes (IELTS General Training). There is a prescribed syllabus for giving the exam. There are four sections viz: Listening, Reading. Speaking and Writing. Here are some tips on how to prepare for IELTS:
1. Begin with the writing section – You should start working on essay writing section because this is one section which has more weightage in writing task and needs practice as the last time you wrote an essay would be probably in school. This task is for both academic and general training students. There are four different categories of essays which are asked viz: Problem solution, opinion based, discussion based and merits demerits essays. So, practice at least 3 essays in each category and read previous exam essay topics as well. Follow a proper structure for your essay writing like introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs and well-structured conclusion. The first task of writing for academic students is reporting an image. So, practice lot of bar graphs, pie charts, line charts and process cycle.
Task 1 for General Training students is letter writing. So, practice formal, semi formal and inform letters. Know the format of letter writing. Be careful about the salutations and practice writing applications, complaints and request letters.
2. Listening section- To ace this section, you need to be well versed with different accents like North American, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand to name a few. For this practice by listening podcasts and practice questions. In this section one hears four different recordings: one is a conversation based on a social context, another is a monologue based on a social context, third is discussion based on any college assignment and fourth recording is again a monologue on university lecture. All the recordings are played only once and are followed by variety of question types like labelling diagrams, multiple choice questions etc.
3. Reading task – This task is different for Academic and General Training students but both types will get passages followed by variety of question types like true, false, not given, yes, no, not given, sentence completion, summary completion, flowchart completion, table completion, note completion and matching heading ad features questions. One needs to have good comprehension skills and need to read a lot. To answer some questions of this section, you need to read between the lines and for some understanding the gist or main purpose of the passage will do the task.
4. Speaking task- If one has command over the English language, then this task will be easy for you. The maximum marks are in task 2 of speaking where a topic is given and one needs to speak for at least for 2 minutes. One needs to speak fluently without fumbling. Practice with a friend or someone in your family on a daily basis.
