“Some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80. It’s not the time that matters, it’s the person.”
The Doctor, Doctor Who 2005-
The TV show Doctor Who follows an alien man and his human companion as he makes his journey through time and space. In a blue police box called the’ TARDIS’, a man who calls himself ‘Doctor’ travels with his companion, solving problems of the galaxy. As the companions confront their own struggles and fears they must also face the Doctor’s regeneration, where the Doctor is ‘born again’ renewed both physically and mentally.
Although many people do not see this coming, this is a truly heartbreaking, tear-jerking show. The relationships that the companions develop with the Doctor are precious, but they all meet a tragic end as the Doctor lives for an incomparably longer time than his companions. In most cases, tragic fate separates the Doctor from his companion, and they are forced to say unwanted farewells. In the end, the Doctor is truly alone, the last of his kind, traveling through time and space.

"When you become the image of your own imagination, it's the most powerful thing you could ever do."
RuPaul, RuPaul’s Drag Race 2009-
RuPaul’s Drag Race is an ongoing American reality competition show, featuring the Emmy - winning host RuPaul. Each season, 9 to 14 drag queens from different parts of America are gathered in a glamorous competition in which they compete for the title ‘America’s Next Drag Superstar’. A new challenge is given to the contestants every episode, accompanied by a runway performance after the completion of each challenge. The judges decide who will be eliminated from the competition based on performance on the given challenge and runway look.
This show is an addicting, enjoyable series that features a controversial topic gaining awareness in the 21st century: homosexuality and drag queens. The drama and hardships the contestants go through are one of the most entertaining aspects of this show, as it is a reality TV series. I was also constantly astonished watching this show, at the incredible performances that these drag queens showcased, and even more incredible transformations each contestant brought forward. Although the unbelievable physical transformations the contestants go through are extraordinary, it’s also very interesting to see the changes in personality and behavior. The professionalism they exhibit, taking on entire new personas and pulling off amazing performances is simply spectacular. Another core aspect of the show that I loved was the way it helped its contestants and viewers come to term with their identities. It is extremely moving to see the journey the contestants go through, gaining confidence and becoming more comfortable with themselves. RuPaul’s Drag Race is a reality show that provides us entertainment and incredible sights, but also touching lessons about coming to terms with ourselves.

“Certain conditions must be met for the sword of exorcism to be drawn. If Katachi, Makoto, and Kotowari are not present, it cannot be unsheathed. The intertwined fates of men give the Mononoke its Form, Truth is the natural state of all things, and Regret is ever present in men's hearts.”
Kusuriuri, Mononoke 2007
The series follows a medicine seller from the Edo period as he exorcises malevolent spirits, or ‘mononoke’. The series has no clear time line or plot as every few episodes a new case is featured. However, to exorcise a mononoke, each time, the medicine seller is required to learn its truth, form, and regret to unsheath the sword of exorcism.
I started watching this series after it was featured in an article about animations with beautiful or unique art styles. After I saw one screencap from the series, I was instantly mesmerized by the incredibly unique, stunning art style. Although I was captivated by the visuals each episode, what motivated me to keep watching was the intriguing story line. The mystery that accompanies every mononoke is truly fascinating. Due to the nature of the mononoke that requires the medicine seller to learn its truth, form, and regret before exorcising it, the viewers are taken on a journey to investigate the mononoke’s story each episode. However, the legacy of the mononoke doesn’t just end after the investigation and following exorcism. The lessons that each story teaches us are what truly makes each episode memorable. This animation may not be for all viewers, as some may find it too ‘eerie’ or ‘subtle’, but I if you have a taste for dark, twisted stories, this is just the right series for you.

“I am a millennial. Generation Y; born between the birth of AIDS and 9/11, give or take. They call us the global generation. We are known for our entitlement and narcissism. Some say it’s because we’re the first generation where every kid gets a trophy just for showing up. Others think it’s because social media allows us to post when we fart or have a sandwich for all the world to see. But it seems our one defining trait is a numbness to the world. An indifference to suffering.”

"Some infinities are bigger than other infinities."
The book that lead so many people into tears, this heartbreaking yet beautiful piece was written by the bestselling author john green. into tears, this heartbreaking yet beautiful piece was written by the bestselling author john green. lead so many people into tears, this heartbreaking yet beautiful piece was written by the bestselling author john green. The Fault In Our Stars starts with Hazel Grace Lancaster, a girl diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid cancer with metastasis forming in her lungs. She soon meets Augustus Waters, another cancer patient while in a support group. Despite the bad conditions and hardships that they go through, their bond grows stronger and stronger throughout the book. The bond is mostly shared through the book that hazel recommends called Imperial Affliction, a story about a cancer-stricken girl named anna. Augustus, disappointed by the sudden ending in this book, develops a plan to meet the author himself in amsterdam.amsterdam.
A supporting, meaningful plot- dissolves into something what people may call tragic. This opinion could differ with people, but I recommend you to read the book for yourself and find out what you think. I overall didn't think it was tear formingly sad, but it was definitely something That I was not expecting until it was actually presented. I would still definitely recommend this to people that have not read this book yet, mostly because of the engaging writing style John green has put into this book.

“‘Carol Anne is dead, been dead fifty-six years this very night. Drowned in a canoeing accident over on Hawthorn Lake, she did. My poor baby. Her body was in that freezing water for hours.’
‘I… I don’t believe you. I just saw her. I just talked with her.’”
Candace Fleming, On the Day I Died: Stories from the Grave 2012
Mike races down the road, anxious not to be late home, angering his mother. However, he is intercepted by a pale girl standing in the middle of the road. Pitying her, he decides to give her a ride home. She introduces herself as Carol Anne, who he finds her eerily quiet, somewhat scary. When she forgets her new shoes on his car, he decides to return them to her house as one last favor. In a shocking twist, when he visits her house, he realizes that there is no Carol Anne. Carol Anne, the girl who he had just had a conversation with, lent a seat on his car, had been dead for fifty six years. Unable to resist, he ventures out to the cemetery where she is buried. What awaits him in the graveyard, are restless, young souls who are impatient to tell their stories to Mike.
This is a book that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for light material, that still has depth. I found this book very interesting although it’s not very challenging to read or understand. In addition, although it is pretty light and relatively easy for our age level, it still has lessons and emotions that can be brought out from every chapter. This book is also very unique and offers a diverse range of stories. Rather than a long novel, this book is more like a collection of short stories. Each story has a different setting and plot, revolving around the ghost’s life and death. What amazed me was the author’s ability to impersonate and portray the characters from such diverse backgrounds. Each character comes from a different time period and location, and her ability to sound like a natural local from each background astounded me. This is an extremely interesting book that can be enjoyed easily and lightly.

“Human beings are strong because we have the ability to change ourselves.”
Saitama, One Punch Man 2015
Saitama is an ordinary unemployed Japanese man looking for a job. One day, in frustration of getting rejected from another interview, he encounters a hideous monster attacking a little child. He defeats the monster, and realizing his talent, he decides to become a hero to help society. He trains tirelessly to the point where he loses all his hair from the stress, becoming possibly the strongest man on Earth. Saitama gets his hero name ‘One Punch Man’ from his ability to defeat any enemy in one punch. The anime portrays his pursuit of finding an opponent that he can’t defeat in one punch with the companionship of his disciple, the cyborg Genos.
Anime often faces huge prejudice and disapproval because people believe that it is limited to cheesy school romance and cringe worthy action. Many fail to realize the incredible diversity it offers because they refuse to even give it a try. One Punch Man is just the anime that I would recommend to someone who is looking for something light and fun to watch. It can be easily enjoyed by anyone, even those who are unfamiliar with anime. This anime is usually light and comedic, but the deep moments that catch you off guard are what truly makes this piece memorable. Saitama’s extremely humane and honorable personality contradict his almost inhuman power, resulting in laughs, but also deep moments of realization where we are able to truly empathize with the character.

“He’s no monster, Gaston; you are!” – Belle
You all probably know the famous disney movie, beauty and the beast. An original storyline that no one could’ve thought of, a beautiful woman and a beast falling in love. The falling rose petals, the dreaded curse. This is all moved into the new version of Beauty and the beast, starring emma watson and dan stevens as the main characters. If you have never heard of the original plot, here’s a brief summary; It starts off with the prince, cursed with a spell that changes him into a terrifying beast. The only way to break this curse, of course, is love.
Even though nothing will be able to beat the original, I could say that this was as good as, or better than, the original disney film of beauty and the beast. The colors, songs, and graphics are all pleasing to the eye. Even though I found it a little cliche that the solution of the problem was love, you have to realize the fact that this was a disney movie. Nonetheless, the ending was still breathtaking. Like all of the other happy ever afters, this was as beautiful as all of them. Personally, one of my favorite parts had to be the ending. It was so good, even though the movie had finished I was sitting there, waiting to the end. I would certainly recommend this movie if you have previously watched the animated version, or even though you haven’t.

We hopefully will start posting weekly reviews of black mirror episodes starting today!
“Hated in The Nation”, the season three finale of the hit series black mirror is in near-future London, where police detective Karin Parke and her tech-savvy sidekick Blue, investigate a string of mysterious deaths with a sinister link to social media....and BEES!
This episode was by far the best episode as it was interesting, realistic, and the plot was quite different from those from the other episodes. It is currently on Netflix - go watch it now!

"You want to know how two chemicals interact, do you ask them? No, they're going to lie through their lying little chemical teeth. Throw them in a beaker and apply heat."
House M.D is a medical TV show starring Hugh Laurie as Dr. House, an antisocial maverick doctor who specializes in diagnostic medicine does whatever it takes to solve puzzling cases that come his way using his crack team of doctors and his wits.
I personally really enjoy watching medical TV shows - if you love topics relating to medicine and characters who are sarcastic, this show is perfect for you.
The series ended on May 21, 2012. All eight seasons are currently on Netflix.

“Dear God. What is it like in your funny little brains? It must be so boring.”
Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock 2010-
The classic Sherlock Holmes series is brought to the 21st century in this modern day adaptation. Sherlock Holmes, portrayed as an ‘emotionless, intelligent sociopath’, meets war veteran John Watson suffering from PTSD. Together they solve crimes that the police are not able to, and develop a unique, precious friendship that changes both of their lives.
Out of the countless Sherlock Holmes adaptations that have been produced, this isolates itself with its unique, captivating storyline and characters. Each character is born again with a new, distinct personality that differs itself from the original, but still resonates the much respected characters of Doyle’s creation. By giving more parts to Sherlock’s older brother, Mycroft, we can follow Sherlock as he is slowly pulled into national secrets. However, the main focus of this show isn’t just the mystery, but the precious relationships that Sherlock and Watson develop. Sherlock in the beginning is an emotionless sociopath that people refuse to get close to. He is seen as an obnoxious man living in his own world, not able to be understood by anyone. Watson, is a retired veteran suffering from PTSD and leading a lonely, miserable life. Their lives are instantly changed when they meet each other, Watson offering Sherlock warm company, and Sherlock providing Watson with the thrill that he missed. This show is a must watch for anyone, even for those who are not interested in mystery.

“That day when the stars came falling. It's almost as if a scene from a dream. Nothing more, nothing less than a beautiful view.”.
Released in 2016, this Japanese anime film called kimi no nawa(or your name) is written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. The storyline of this movie is easily described as confusing, but beautiful and exciting. It all starts with the main characters, Taki and Mitsuha, swapping bodies. Taki, a high school boy that lives in tokyo and Mitsuha, a high school girl that lives in rural japan. Few times a week, they start to live each other’s lives. They come together closer and closer, reaching towards the plot twist circled around a beautiful comet. This movie was announced to be a major commercial success, ranking in the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, with a total gross of $353 million.
To most people, the plot of this story may come out to be confusing and difficult to understand. However because it is so beautiful to watch, it is almost certain that you will come to visit this movie once again. The plot twist at the end makes it even more breathtaking, making it impossible to question such high ratings. From the intro to the ending, myself as an audience felt like I was focused to nothing but the movie when watching. This was a perfect mixture of comedy, mystery, and finally, love.  In personal opinions, this movie was one of my all-time favorites. The amazing graphics and music all captured the story so well, and I had to watch it 5 more times. This is a movie that I highly recommend, especially if you are someone who is interested in animation.

“Welcome to the real world. It sucks. You’re gonna love it!” Monica Geller, Friends 1994-2004
The iconic American sitcom Friends portrays the lives of six friends as they pursue their dreams in New York. Through its 20 year run, it conveys the journey of six friends going from young financially struggling individuals to a group of happy, established friends. Each episode sketches the daily struggles the six encounter in their lives, from family struggles to romantic relationships.
Although this show is relatively old compared to the ones that are popular now, it remains as one of my favorites. Each of the characters are somewhat ordinary, yet interesting. The fact that none of the characters come from very special or extraordinary backgrounds makes them more appealing. Rather than heavy dilemmas or controversial subjects, this show provides light, humorous material for any occasion. As a student watching this show, it also gave me hope that one day I would be as successful or happy as the characters. It made me dream of and become excited for a future in a big city, pursuing a career that I’m passionate about. Although some may say that the achievements or stories of the characters are too unrealistic, they’re enough to give some hope and entertainment. In the end, that is probably all that matters.

“Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else.”
Tyler Durden-Fight Club 1999
The narrator of this movie is an insomniac office worker who can only fall asleep by crying with others. He does this by attending different support groups every week, from tuberculosis survivors to alcoholics. When he meets a soap maker, Tyler Durden on a flight, his life instantly starts to revolve around Tyler and his dangerous lifestyle. They become co founders of a ‘Fight Club’, a dangerous society that lets people tired from their lives fight with one another every night to relieve stress. However, when things start going out of hand, the narrator must come to terms about the truth regarding himself and Tyler.
In many ways, this movie is like the character Tyler himself. It’s distinctive, captivating, and mysterious. The narrator and main character’s name and identity is purposefully unrevealed to emphasize the fact that he’s a generic “everyman” office worker. The underwhelming, ordinary nature of the character makes him extremely relatable to the audience, causing us to question our own lives as he does. This movie expands on the many problems of our society, or the dilemmas that we face multiple times in our lives. In world where the car we drive, the clothes we wear, and the job we have define us, what is the purpose and pleasure in living? What is the cause that we are all living for if there is one? This movie is fascinating, absorbing, and riveting in every way, and is a refreshing film that everyone should watch.

“ You don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. ”
hannah baker, thirteen reasons why, jay asher
This novel is about Clay Jensen, a shy and quiet high school student who returns home from yet another day from school to find a box with his name scribbled across lying on his porch. Inside, Clay discovers thirteen cassette tapes, each containing and explaining a different reason, person, and story that drove Hannah Baker, his classmate and crush to her suicide.
I personally really enjoyed reading this book as it was not another stereotypical teenage love story and had interesting characters alongside an interesting storyline. The novel portrays several " darker " themes such as death, guilt, blame, betrayal, and violence and does not have a " typical " happy ending. I would definitely recommend this novel to my peers ( I have, in fact, gotten two of my peers to start reading this very novel )  as it is, as I just mentioned, an extremely well-written book with an interesting and different storyline and characters. This novel also happens to address several problems in our society today - problems which are practically inevitable which I alongside the majority of my classmates already have begun facing and will continue facing for the rest of our lives.
The TV Series of this series was recently released - expect a review soon! For those of you who’d rather watch the series then read the book, check out the official trailer here! :~)
