Abby Nugent Artist Statement Assignment
As someone who has always had a love for photography, I had lost that passion over years and years of neglect. In high school, you could not find me without my camera or not at a school sports game. I was on my schools’ yearbook staff and loved every bit of the extra-curricular duties, especially the photography part. I was writing, taking photos, editing, interviewing, and interacting with the student body for three years. Once I graduated, I had little to no use for my camera. I would pull it out on the random instances when I wanted to capture an event, but then put it back in my closet until that urge struck again.
After about five years, I am here using my camera again, because of this class. Throughout this semester, this class has reignited my love for the hobby. I loved walking around and finding beauty in seemingly mundane things, I even found myself finding new little things on walks that I had walked a million times. Taking pictures opens eyes to a prettier world, one where little things are beautiful. Playing with lighting, angles, shadows, and even editing has brought so much fun and I’m really thankful for this skill to be relearned.
I hope everyone has the chance to take photographs, especially when we get to see through their eyes. It’s an artform that connects people worldwide, and I know I won’t be putting my camera back into the closet to collect dust. I’m going to be taking pictures all the time, whether it’s for fun, work, or practice. I’m going to continue, for me.
