Summary of my research on sociology
This research is focused on the Algerian migrant population living in Mirail neighborhood of Toulouse. Specifically, I’m interesting in the socio-economic status of their descendants grown up in France. On account of this, the starting question should be as follows: What role does being a descendant of an Algerian family that lives in the Mirail neighborhood play on the socio-economic status that one has when coming of age?
In relation to the methodology, I have opted for interviews and life stories, because in my opinion, it is the most appropriate way of understanding people's experiences and how they have lived them. If you want to understand a group of people, their circumstances, their way of life and culture, you must be able to look through their stories. Lives are not reducible to statistical parameters or patterns, therefore the correct way to understand their realities, causes and consequences; it is through their own voices.
The profile of the interviewees has been limited in relation to two aspects: the decade when their parents migrated (90’s or 2000’s) to Toulouse and the residence place of both parents and children. I have chosen these two aspects due to the strong presence of the original population of Algeria in the Mirail neighborhood and also because I can focus on a generation of descendants of that origin with access to the labor market.
My research is an approach to understand how the difficult experiences of families migration and their integration in a country and city with a different culture and identity, influence their children's access to a certain socio-economic level.
