A Thomas Headcanon

I have a lot of theories and headcanons about Thomas The Tank Engine, and this is just the most recent one I’ve had. While reading Thomas & The Guard again - as you do - I happened to spot this little detail on the opening page:

[Thomas] has two coaches. They are old, and need new paint, but he loves them very much. He calls them Annie and Clarabel. Annie can only take passengers, but Clarabel can take passengers, luggage and the Guard.

And it was that sentence in bold which really caught my attention. Not only does it imply that Annie & Clarabel were not named as such until Thomas received them, but it also suggests that Thomas himself named them. (In the original books, anyway. The TV series implies that they were named long before they met Thomas, and this is all but confirmed in The Adventure Begins.)

But where would Thomas have gotten those names from? Well, to answer that, we just have to look at Thomas’ entry in the Engines section of The Island of Sodor:

A Billinton E2 0-6-0 tank from the London Brighton & South Coast Railway which arrived on Sodor in 1915, no-one quite knows how! His crew got on well with the local people, both married Sodor girls, and by 1920 neither wanted to be parted from their engine or leave the Island.

Again, it’s the bit in bold that’s of interest to us. Now, we don’t officially know the names of the women Thomas’ crew married (or those of Thomas’ crew, for that matter), so this is what I’m thinking: Perhaps their wives happened to also be called Annie and Clarabel, and so when Thomas received his coaches, and wanted to give them names, he thought, what better names to give them than those of his crew’s wives?

A bit of a stretch, yes, but it’s a sweet idea nonetheless.

Does everyone remember when we had those GORGEOUS Northern Lights sightings last year? Well, I commissioned the INCREDIBLY talented @synthetic-rust for a piece involving Skarloey and his driver (my OC Tabitha) admiring the stunning lights that could surely be seen from Sodor, given the beautiful photos from the nearby Isle of Man.

Happy (Late) Pride Month, Y'all!

Sorry for the delay but, Better Late Than Never I guess.

I wanted to display some Pride here by showcasing my updated designs on two of the first displays of "Queerness" in the Thomas franchise, not counting instances in the books in which the word "queer" would be used with its original meaning (that being "strange").

Rusty, being gender-neutral. Of course, he was a male originally and would later be referred as male in the series prior, plus "gender neutral" doesn't exactly mean "non-binary", but it was still a rarely seen concept at the time it was made (1995), and I still think it was a smart choice to do considering his name was really neutral-sounding. (along with Skarloey and Rheneas' coincidentally)

James, with Alec Baldwin giving him a flamboyant voice in S5. James being gay became kind of a joke in the fandom since then. I see him as Pan in my personal humanized AU.

Both are coincidentally Number 5 on their respective railways, and both told a spooky story to two characters, one who believed it and one dismissive of it. (Duncan Gets Spooked and Phantom Express)

AU Time - Märklin

Märklin Hohenzollern, known shortly and friendly as Mark, was brought to Germany in the early days of Sodor. I haven't really figured out a Pre-North Western railway he could fit in. (the S&M, the W&S, the TK&ELR, Sodor Tramways) So he's pretty much in the same league as 98462, 87546 and the Red Engines, being simply a loaned foreign engine. (and engine driver in this case)

Mark was very introvert and reserved during his working time on the island, so no one really knew him too well, or knew about his personality. He didn't really liked being in the spotlight (*wink wink*). He worked mainly on the Main Line Harbour, away from the business of the Branch Lines and the Main Line's bigger areas. Although he ocassionally brought trains as far as Crosby, albeit still not socially interacting too much. Whenever he pulled trains outside the harbour, a loaned tank engine, Thomas (when he was still station pilot), or a medium-sized engine like Edward or Eagle would take over the shunting. (this was before Percy arrived)

When Percy arrived, his innocent and kind nature made Märklin get out of his shell a bit more, eventually becoming Mark's best friend. His only friend on Sodor, actually (and sadly).

Eventually, around Season 2, his trial time ended (not to mention Sir Topham Hatt was getting fed up with Mark's anti social nature and wanting to do him and himself a favour), and so he was sent back to Germany, having only made a single friend on Sodor, missing the chance to make much more.

Sidenote: I like to believe that in Tale of the Brave, when Percy said he'd go to "Far away lands", apart from obviously going to Columbia with Gator, he indirectly also meant he'd go to Germany to find Mark. Maybe even (had they not stayed on Sodor) go to America to find Hank and Japan to find Hiro. Like, bro wanted to do his own BWBA before Thomas had the idea.

Another sidenote: Mark is also the name of Marc Winslow (it is sometimes written with a K in movie credits), a mexican voice actor and singer who provided the voice for Thomas (S24's last episodes and specials), Ryan (S20 only), Rex (S20-onward) and a truck in JBS. He also sang Our Tale of the Brave, something appropiate considering not only being Thomas' future voice but considering what I've said about Mark in this post so far.

Shoutout to @just-an-emily-existing and her posts about her AU for inspiring me to do this. I probably would have done this anyways, but Emily sort of pushed/inspired me to do it now/in the right direction. Love reading your stuff!

Sooo i was in the ttte fandom since.......march i think- so i was in the fandom for a pretty long time (but i didnt start a tumblr by that time) and then in July i got a tablet with a pen (i used to draw with a phone and finger and it was painfull) and my art has been improving since then
