THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO A SERENGETI SAFARI
The Serengeti is undoubtedly one of the world’s most celebrated national parks and a perfect snapshot of true African wilderness. Its great rolling grasslands and golden savannah give you an awe-inspiring sense of space and support large populations of zebra, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, gazelle and antelope – not to mention millions of wildebeest! And where there are game by the dozen, predators will not be far behind. It’s a paradise for lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyena and wild dogs – and one of the most sought-after game viewing destinations in Africa. Location: Where is the Serengeti?
Tanzania’s flagship park lies in the north-western corner of the country and borders with Kenya to the north. The conservation area continues across the Kenyan border into the Masai Mara National Reserve, together forming the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem – one of the biggest and most protected ecosystems on Earth. It spans approximately 30 000 square kilometres (12 000 square miles) – about the size of South Carolina. The park’s northern region consists of small rivers, green rolling hills and lush granite outcrops (kopjes). It is far less crowded than the rest of the park and offers good wildlife viewing year-round. It’s the most remote corner of the Serengeti and sets the stage for the Wildebeest Migration’s dramatic Mara River crossings around July/August. This is a great place to go on a hot-air balloon safari for a bird’s eye view over thousands upon thousands of wildebeest, and a good area to see elephant and giraffe. This is the most accessible part of the park, which means it can get a little busy during peak safari season (about June to October). During the rainy season from about January to March, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle graze here on fresh grass. It's also the time that the main calving season takes place and predators – especially the big cats (lion, leopard and cheetah) – are taking every opportunity to hunt easy prey. A very good game viewing all-rounder, the heart of the Serengeti houses a number of camps and lodges, which makes it a busy part of the park – especially during peak safari season from about June to October. It offers very good access to all the Migration hot spots and is home to a high density of plains game, leopard, cheetah and lion.
The region’s Seronera River Valley creates a natural boundary between the grassy plains of the south and the wooded hills of the north. As a result, this area is a haven for wildlife from both habitats, making the central Serengeti one of the richest ecosystems in the park with good year-round game viewing. Lions and cheetahs are common here, and leopards are often seen in the valley.

From rare wildlife sightings, incredible local cuisine and unique cultural encounters, to the exploration of yourself and the natural beauty that surrounds you, we can only think of reasons to go.
Escape the stressful hustle and bustle of daily living: An African safari not only gives you a complete change in scenery, but also allows for you to get in touch with nature and recharge your batteries away from the stresses of modern life—all while exploring the untamed corners of the earth.
A great value, no matter what package you choose: From standard accommodation packages, to 5-star luxury lodges and properties, the majority of African safaris not only offer a wide range of pricing options to help you tailor the trip to your budget, but also include accommodations, meals, sightseeing transportation and more.
First-hand encounters with wildlife while you still can: Now is the time to see some of Africa’s wildlife first-hand before extinction poses a real threat. Many endangered species, such as elephants, rhinos and lions, might not be around forever, so why give up the chance to get a glimpse of these rare creatures and experience them in their natural environment?
Safaris are possible at any time of the year: Top African safari providers have the ability to adapt to the exact locations of the yearly migration of wildlife in order to offer ideal game viewing throughout the year.
Live luxuriously: Though it may sound too be good to be true, the combination of decadent cuisine, some of the world’s most breath-taking views, private verandas and exquisite amenity offerings, included in a number of luxury-inspired African safari packages, provide the same adventurous and cultural experience you’d expect to get on a safari, with a little extra indulgence.
Feed your adventurous side: There is nothing more thrilling than encountering a pride of lions just after a hunt or crossing paths with a massive elephant while on an off-road safari vehicle tour. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, pump up the adrenaline by getting even closer with a guided walking tour.
Peace of mind about your safety: When you choose a top-rated African safari provider, such as Zara Tours, you can always expect to be provided with an experienced Tanzanian guide who is trained in leading your specific adventure, and prepared to prevent, detect and treat a number of expedition situations. Professional tour guides are also able to speak fluent English, and often, other languages such as Spanish and German.
Help support African nature conservation and wildlife rehabilitation: Along with the many amenities mentioned above, the cost of an African safari includes conservation fees for the game parks and wildlife centres that you visit on your journey—helping to protect these wilderness areas and the beautiful wildlife that inhabits them.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVEL TO AFRICA
Many people, when choosing a holiday destination, will mostly choose between Europe, USA or Asia. Just like I have always done. Only a handful travelers choose to vacate in parts of Africa, although mostly South Africa. We all know the African continent is the land of diverse cultures, natural wonders and home to the worlds most amazing wildlife safari experiences. In this Tanzania travel blog I will inspire you to visit Tanzania and put it high on your bucketlist.
After visiting almost 100 countries I have only been to 3 African countries. A shame, but on the other hand there is still a lot of catching up to do and I will. Located centrally on the Eastcoast of Africa, the United Republic of Tanzania is a mountainous country offering a wide range of spectacular experiences. Some of the most exotic sceneries, stunning beaches, luxurious accommodation options, great food and above all memorable moments.
In the following list in this Tanzania travel blog I will recommend you some places to visit, things to do and more info for your Tanzania trip.
First of let me start with why you should visit Tanzania. It is flourished with natural wonders and has some of the most stunning geographical views one can witness. Whether you are a wildlife photographer or just love to capture nature’s essence with your phone to share on Instagram, every place to visit in Tanzania has amazing backdrops. You will be swept off your feet constantly: Africa at its best.
The best months for a Tanzania safari are from June to October, June and July for the wildebeest migration and January to February for calving season. In terms of the islandlife at Zanzibar then February is the hottest month when temperature rises to 28°C and July being the coldest when temperatures drop to around 24 °C. Pretty much Tanzania has a stable climate and it never gets really cold.
Animals in their natural habitat are either witnessed in an open zoo or on television by most people. But when you visit Tanzania it is possible to get a glimpse of one of the seven wonders Mother Nature. The great wildebeest migration is one of the best things to see in Tanzania and takes place in Serengeti National Park. It is a once in a lifetime chance for researchers and wildlife enthusiasts who dream of witnessing this spectacular event. It is the time when millions of wildebeest, zebras and antelopes end up on the south of Serengeti and move towards Ndutu in the Ngorongoro Conservation area. Between July and August thousands of wildebeest are awaited by hungry crocodiles as they try to cross the Mara River. It is also the time when thousands of baby calves are born thus creating more reasons for other predators like lions, cheetahs and hyenas to follow behind for hunting.

When the best time to travel to Tanzania is: going on safari in the low season
beating the crowds – just you and the wild, best experienced in the low season Endless horizons, vast plains, watching elephants munch on twigs for breakfast – just you and the wild. That’s how we love safari, that’s how everyone loves safari. The reality is that high season will see increased numbers of visitors and thus more safari vehicles in the national parks. An exciting sighting will not stay a secret for long, before other cars arrive at the scene. Low season on the other hand will grant you exclusive game viewing and your very own sightings. Two’s company, three’s a crowd – if you don’t like sharing your breakfast with elephants with other safarians, go on safari in Tanzania in the low season.
Lower prices – a more exclusive experience at lower prices, only in the low season
Fewer visitors equal less occupancy of safari lodges and camps during the months of March to May and November. And that’s when accommodations lower their rates or promote specials. While prices go down, service, facilities, and experience don’t. On the contrary! The staff will have extra time to take care of you, stop for a chat, and go the extra mile. Your favourite sundowners spot on the communal deck – it will be yours for the whole stay.
Many camps even take it a step further and have different prices for low season (May and April) and shoulder season (March and November). Taking advantage of the off-peak season may afford you more luxury for your money.
Lush landscapes – for green grasslands and dramatic skies, travel in the green season
Less people, less money spent – fair enough. But it will be raining and miserable the whole time. Not quite! Low season attracts less visitors because it is the rainy season. But: it is also the green season. Dry steppe turns into lush grasslands, dark rain clouds are the perfect backdrop for dramatic photos and the light is simply magical. Rains in the bush are often heavy, but just as often they are short. An afternoon thunderstorm or rain clouds in the morning won’t linger the whole day. Rains are often localised, which means you may be just as lucky and witness it from afar.
Calving Season – if you like baby animals, travel off season
Many travel to Tanzania hoping to see the Great Migration of thousands of wildebeest and zebras in the Serengeti. There is no denying: it can get rather busy in the Serengeti or Kenya’s Masai Mara during this time with travellers from around the world hoping to see this great natural spectacle. But nature is spectacular all year-round! While not strictly speaking low season, travel in the months of January and February, off-Migration-season, and witness the calving season. Every year, hundreds of wildebeest are born in the Southern Serengeti every day. Attracted by the easy prey, expect many big cats and other predators lurking.
Travelling to Tanzania in the low season may just be the best kept secret of East African safaris. And always remember: rain is a blessing!
Get in touch and let’s start planning together!
