okay i know that it isn’t what this blog’s about and some of y’all think that asians aren’t poc enough but hear me out : 

chinatowns are being gentrified. 

why is that a big deal ?  the existence of chinatowns in cities in the united states were formed and created in the same way most neighborhoods of immigrants were created : because white people decided to push us out of normal society. in washington dc, the entirety of its chinatown has become large chains  ( owned by non-asians usually ) where white people go to hang out and drink bubble tea.  in new york city, there are three chinatowns, and while gentrification in the near future is unlikely, it’s beginning. apartment complexes where my family have lived in since they moved here in the 1900s, are being replaced with condo complexes. elmhurst, a neighborhood with mainly asian immigrants in queens is starting to form apartment/condo buildings for whites. 

consequently, asian owned restaurants and businesses are suffering .  two  of  the  restaurants  i  grew  up  with  have  been  closed  because  there’s been white competition. 

it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but picture legacies of culture, businesses, and families, being removed from the neighborhood they worked so hard to create all by white, wealthy college educated students. 

now, there’s not much we can do, but i just want to urge you : support asian owned businesses. write a good review on yelp after you eat. tip well. if you have the choice, always go to an asian owned restaurant. and you’ll know because there’ll be more chairs than there should be. one old grandpa will be sitting there waiting for customers. actively seek out asian owned businesses and support them. please.

If you live in the US, you should not be freaking out about nuclear war with North Korea in a “we’re all going to die” way. DPRK has one rocket that can reach the continental US, it’s barely gotten functional, and they have no warheads small enough to be carried by that rocket. They can theoretically hit Hawaii and Alaska, but Hawaii is a small, long-range target and Alaska has very low population density, so attacks there would likely be ineffective.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t be freaking out about nuclear war with North Korea. It’s to say that you should stop being so fucking self-centered about it.

We’re not going to die. If we nuke North Korea, we’ll wipe out thousands of noncombatants, just like we did in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even in an “ideal” outcome for that first strike, where Kim goes down immediately, his military apparatus will retaliate — against South Korea and probably Japan. This hypothetical nuclear exchange will kill millions of civilians who, surprise surprise, live far away and look sort of not-European. Then we’ll spend the rest of our long, non-incinerated lives bickering with each other over whether it was cool of us to start that fight.

If you want to speak out against Trump’s nuclear bullshittery, don’t bleat “we’re all going to die.” Yell “no atrocities in our name.”
