Little Lesson #5: Dance 🇲🇼 Malawi is a country full of tradition and culture. One very important aspect of the Malawi community is dance. The National Dance Troupe, formed in 1987, performs traditional dances across the country to help keep the tradition alive and the community united. Africa Bags is known for our fashionable and user friendly bags. However, many overlook the good that is done with the proceeds. Here is a sneak peak into what we do with our profits ❤️ Pictured here is a woman from Viweme Village, a very small village in Malawi of about 200 people. This village was one of the first to partner with Africa Bags, and since then we have raised enough funds through the Africa Bags project to assist in establishing a village day care center, Community Development Center, and a village savings and loan program. One of the most exciting aspects about Africa Bags partnering with the Viweme village is the Africa Bags micro-loans. Villagers partnering with Africa Bags are able to borrow money from the Africa Bags savings account, which a portion of all Africa Bags sales is contributed to, at a reasonable interest rate. This encourages villagers to join the program and provides them access to more stable micro-loans rather than more risky ones offered from outside lenders. If you want to learn more about this, or any other Africa Bags program, DM us for more info! #fashion #malawifashion #finance #microloan #lending #opportunity #helpingothers — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/QoGOFbB

Little Lesson #4: Hunger Crisis in Malawi “More than 2.8 Million people will face hunger in the coming months in the worst food crisis in a decade in Malawi, where a staggering four out of every 10 children suffer from stunting” (United Nations World Food Programme qte. in United Nations 2022) This is a reality for people in Malawi. Due to severe flooding and droughts, they are not able to grow crops to make staple foods such as Maize (see Little Lesson #1). Without help from the world, the Malawian community will undoubtedly suffer. Help us to stop this from happening! We provide Malawians with additional income and access to fresh food through our “Greening Malawi”, “Africa Pads”, and “Africa Bags” programs. You can support us in our fight to help Malawi through volunteering or interning for us, purchasing one of our hand crafted Africa Bags, or purchasing an Africa Pads kit for Malawian girls and women. #helpingwomennow #helpingothers #foodpoverty #fashion — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/wntNB1A

Little Lesson #3: Literacy Rates in Malawi 📚✏️🎓 According to UNESCO, the literacy rate within Malawi for persons aged 15 and older is 69.8% for men and 55.2% for women (2015). This not only shows the disparity between male and female education rates within the country, but also exemplifies the lack of resources being dedicated to changing this problem. While the literacy rate for women has increased from around 45% in 1985, the sad reality is that this growth plateaued at about 55% since around 2000 (UNESCO 2015). Africa Bags is dedicating a large part of our organization to supporting education within Malawi, especially focusing on women’s education. One of our biggest successes in this area is that we have built women’s restrooms at 8 different schools so that women can still go to school while on their periods. While this does target the gap in literacy rates among Malawi men and women, we need more support from the community in order to help women’s literacy rates continue to rise! DM us to get involved, donate/purchase our products, or learn more about what we do! #womenseducationmatters #literacymatters #malawi #helpingothers — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/m4ziOGr

One of Our Favorite Success Stories!! This is the Chintheche group from Malawi who utilize sign language as some of the tailors are deaf. Africa Bags has fundraised to build them a Community Development Center, where the groups will not only produce Africa Bags, like the Reversible Bags: 2 Options, but will also have a place for village meetings, community gatherings, etc. We hope that this center provides new opportunities for Malawians to pursue paths not previously available to them. Fun fact: The groups make all their own bricks to contribute to the construction of the building! #fundraisingforacause #fundraising #deaf #community #helpingothers — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/XIHqiJ4

Help a Malawian woman gain social freedom ❤️ Currently, many women in Malawi are forced to stop attending school and work during their menstrual cycle, due to the social stigma around women’s reproductive rights and a lack of menstrual products. Africa Bags is dedicated to helping these women have equal access to work and education opportunities by educating Malawian society about women’s rights and providing reusable menstrual products. These goods are hand crafted by Malawian women, giving them both a stable income and access to sanitary products. Help us help them by volunteering or purchasing Malawian handcrafted goods, like these reusable menstrual products and much more, from our page or website www.africabags.org. #womensrights #menstruation #educationmatters #equalityforall — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/tEbzQ5r

Building A Better Future For Malawian Children 🧑🏿🦱💕 Photographed here is a child we had the pleasure of meeting on an Africa Pads trip to Malawi! Seeing young faces like this continues to inspire us to help Malawi grow so that Malawian children can lead a better life. Africa Pads is specifically dedicated to achieving this by helping generate stable incomes for women and producing reusable menstrual goods so women can maintain certain freedoms, like attending school or work, while on their period. Our hope is that by the time the child photographed here has grown up, Africa Pads will have impacted Malawi to the extent that women can enjoy the liberties they deserve! Help us to do this by DMing us or visiting our website www.africabags.org. #womenshealth #womenempowerment #womeninbusiness #children — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/4EzyV6R

Help a girl in Malawi have a brighter future by purchasing a pad kit for them! With every pad kit purchase, a Malawian girl gains more freedom and education. Currently, these girls miss school and job opportunities because they do not have the sanitary supplies necessary to sustain them during their periods. These pad kits give girls the potential to do whatever they want while on their periods, and that is a gift you can’t put a price on! Buy a pad kit today by DMing us or go to www.africabags.org #helpingmalawi #womensrightsarehumanrights #menstrualhygiene — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/tLOqZ38

Little Lesson #2: Education in sub-Saharan Africa This is a photo taken of students in Choma, Zambia during one of our trips to Africa. Unfortunately, sub-Saharan Africa faces the highest rate of education exclusion compared to all other African regions. In fact, “over one-fifth of children between the ages of about 6 and 11 are out of school, followed by one-third of youth between the ages of about 12 and 14”(UNESCO 2022). The Harsh reality is that these children don’t have the time or resources to go to school because their basic needs such as food, shelter, and health, are not being met. Africa Bags is helping curve this patterns by giving children the resources they need to go to school. This includes menstrual products, financial stability and much more. Help us help them by visiting www.africabags.org today! #educationmatters #africa #youth #helpingothers — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/sT2vFVBLz

Little Lesson #1: Nsima In order to truly help people, it is essential to understand their culture, their life experiences, and what it means to live a day in their shoes. With this in mind, Africa Bags is excited to share some insight into life in Malawi through “Little Lesson” posts which will explain different aspects of what it means to live in Malawi! Read below for our very first “Little Lesson” about the process of making a staple Malawian dish, Nsima. Nsima is a dish which is vital to Malawian food culture as the main ingredient, maize, is one of their most widely grown and easily accessible crops and the dish is filled with important nutrients. The first picture is in Kamweko Village, and shows the process of making Nsima. Malawians dry the maize (corn) and pick the kernels off the cobs. In the picture they are pounding the dry kernels into a flour, called wufu. In the second photo, also taken in Kamweko Village, the next step in the Nsima process is shown as the wufu is sifted. The final step after this would be to boil the wufu so that it becomes a starchy thick porridge. Visit our page next week for another “Little Lesson” into Malawian culture! #helpingmalawi #food #Nsima #education — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3zKZbBR

Stephen posted a video to Instagram: Happy New Year from Africa Bags to you! Let’s go into 2022 by taking a moment to reflect on 2021 and how we can do better in 2022. Pictured here are two children from the village of Chibanzi in central Malawi. This photo shows the hardships of Malawi…children raising children, often due to their parents being sick with HIV. It’s almost like a missing generation. Children are left orphaned or often raised by their grandparents. Help us change this in 2022 by visiting our website www.africabags.org or DMing us for more information on how you can be part of this project! #helpingothers #helpingmalawi #newyear https://instagr.am/tv/CYR1QGsJL61/
