The Twelve Days of Christmas originated as a children's poem in a book called Mirth about Mischief in 1760. In the 20th century, composer Frederic Austin (1872-1952) added some of his own words and adapted a melody from a European folk song dating back to at least the 16th century. Famous Alcoholics Jose Cuervo In 1758, Jose Antonio Cuervo founded a distillery in the village of Tequila, near Guadalajara, and 37 years later, his son Jose Guadalupe was granted the first license by the King of Spain to produce what was called at the time "wine of the earth." The La Rojeña distillery, the oldest such commercial facility in the western hemisphere, has been continuously producing tequila since then. Throughout its history and right up to today, the elegant, hacienda-like La Rojeña and the Jose Cuervo company have remained securely in the hands of the descendants of the original Cuervo family. Famous Alcoholics Campari By the time Gaspare Campari was 14, he was already a master drink mixer in Turin. When he settled on the perfect mixture for an aperitif, his concoction had over 60 ingredients. In 1860, he founded Gruppo Campari to make his trademark bitters in Milan. Unsurprisingly, the recipe is a closely guarded secret supposedly known by only the acting Gruppo Campari chairman, who works with a tiny group of employees to make the concentrate with which alcohol and water are infused to get Campari. Famous Alcoholics Tanqueray When he was young, Charles Tanqueray’s life path seemed pretty straightforward. He came from 3 generations of Bedfordshire clergymen, so it was only natural that he would follow suit. But he didn’t. Instead, he began making gin in 1830 in a little plant in London. My watch for the day is my Ancon MIL-107, a surprise gift from my beautiful wife @57preacherswife #AffordableWatches #WeeklyThemes #AffordableHorology #MiamiWatches #WRUW #WOMW #WUS #Alcohol #Liquor #History #anconwatches #calidial

Famous Alcoholics Jim Beam The namesake of the world’s best-selling bourbon whiskey didn’t actually start the distillery that is now named after him. His great-grandfather Jacob Beam opened up shop in 1788 and started selling barrels of whiskey in 1795. In those days, the whiskey went by the name of “Old Tub.” Jacob handed down the distillery to his son David Beam, and it went all the way down the generational line until it got to Colonel James Beauregard Beam in 1894. He was only 30 when he took over the family business, and he ran the distillery until Prohibition shut him down. After repeal in 1933, Jim quickly restarted and began bringing back the Old Tub brand, but he also added a new drink to the company: a bourbon simply called Jim Beam. Famous Alcoholics Jack Daniel Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel was the descendent of Welsh settlers who came to the US in the early 19th century. Born in 1846 or 1850, he was one of 13 children. By 1866 he was distilling whiskey in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Unfortunately, he had quite the temper. One morning in 1911 Daniel went to work early and couldn’t get his safe open. He blew up and kicked it, which injured his toe so badly that it became infected. The infection soon turned to blood poisoning, which killed the whiskey giant. Famous Alcoholics Johnnie Walker Walker was born in 1805 in Ayrshire, Scotland. He inherited a trust in 1819 when his father died and invested in a grocery store. He then became a very successful grocer in the town of Kilmarnock and even sold a whisky, Walker’s Kilmarnock Whisky. Johnnie’s son Alexander was the one who led them to whisky fame, however. He spent time in Glasgow learning how to make tea, but he eventually took over the grocery store from his father. He dropped the tea and switched to whisky, and came up with “Old Highland Whisky,” which became Johnnie Walker Black Label. Famous Alcoholics Captain Morgan In the 17th century, Morgan was a feared privateer. Not only did the Welsh pirate marry his own cousin, he ran dangerous missions for the governor of Jamaica, including capturing Spanish prisoners in Cuba and raiding Port-au-Prince in Haiti. He then held the entire city of Portobelo, Panama for ransom after plundering the Cuban coast. His pillaging career didn’t come to an end until Spain and England signed a peace treaty in 1671. Instead of being punished for his overseas antics, Morgan became a knight and lieutenant governor of Jamaica.
