L'amant (1992)
the direction is minimal and feels somewhat uninspired. however, for the movie's intents and purposes, the love-making scenes were brimming with passion and intensity. the intricate set design and lighting, and overall dreamy feel of the movie also makes up for the conventional story and somewhat stilted performances.

The Holdovers (2023)
lovely and charming student-mentor Christmas movie with touches of John Hughes thrown in for good measure. Paul Giamatti brilliantly plays a gruff teacher who is responsible for the well being of a holdover student over the Christmas break, and as the movie progresses, we see the relationship between the stern mentor and troubled student gradually thaw. not an entirely original premise by any means, yet the movie evokes a mood that is comfy - like being enveloped by a warm blanket while you sit in the living room watching the fireplace on a cold winter's night.

The Zone of Interest (2023)
fascinating how the deliberate direction, lack of plot, static and intentional framing, sound design, and apathetic characters were utilised as a thematic framing for the banality of evil. The Zone of Interest plays like a slice-of-life movie with an undercurrent of evil emanating in the background. the viewer does not directly see the atrocities committed by the German Nazis in this movie, rather you catch hints of it in the background - smoke emanating from a chimney in the background, ashes slowly flowing through a river, the eerie sounds of gunshots and screaming that serve as the background for a Nazi officer's picnic with his family. the movie is cold and calculated, like the Nazi officers looking for better ways to achieve genocidal KPIs and to climb the Nazi corporate ladder. while there certainly isn't a shortage of Holocaust movies, Jonathan Glazer'e experimental approach veers on the subtle and is effective in further conveying the atrocities committed by the Nazis, and how they treat their actions as "just another day at the office". this idea itself is where lies the true horror of apathy and indifference.
