can we please take a moment to talk about these impact frames from that direct confrontation between Garp and Kuzan in the latest One Piece episode??? because oh my f*cking goD it’s so beautifully(?) tragic…
and the way their past younger versions of themselves are reflected in each other’s eyes just before they’re about to exchange blows—
NO I’M NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING 😭😭😭

It is interesting that Oda does not actually show Hatchi getting shot. If you read the whole sequence, very little attention is paid to Hatchi at all, with most of the focus going to Luffy, with some extra reactions from Camie and Nami for flavor. Even when Hatchi is explaining himself, Luffy gets three panels to himself while Hatchi only gets one
The effect is that the reader gets to see Luffy make a decision in real time. Oda has said in an SBS that he very deliberately doesn't have Luffy use thought bubbles, so right now the reader doesn't get to know his innermost thoughts. But we can see him work through the emotion of the moment and know when he decides he's going to punch a Celestial Dragon in the face, consequences be damned.
