hijabi!reader | a handful of students sitting in front of alhaitham flinch when the doors to the lecture hall suddenly swing open. everyone takes turns glancing back to see who was making such an entrance twenty minutes after class started. alhaitham’s curiosity gets the best of him too, and he looks over his shoulder to find you sheepishly making your way inside.

“i will not be tolerating latecomers next time,” the lecturer calls from the front, without once looking away from the board. “come on time or don’t come at all.”

you quietly slip into the seat next to alhaitham, who sat in the last row closest to the exit, and he acknowledges your greeting smile with a nod of his head. from his periphery, he sees you try your best to make as little noise as possible by slowly pulling your things out from your bag. first, it’s your notebook, a pencil case, the handouts from last week—then you freeze, perhaps noticing something was missing.

“psst, ‘haitham,” you whisper. “i’m so sorry, i left mine.”

gesturing towards the thick textbook alhaitham has opened up in front of him, he gets the hint and promptly nudges the book towards you.

“thank you,” you say, slightly leaning forward to scan the pages.

in the process, alhaitham notices a few strands of hair straying from under your hijab. you haven’t seemed to take notice yet. judging by your tardiness, you must’ve been in quite the rush to get here.

alhaitham pokes you in the shoulder with the edge of his pen.

your eyes don’t pull away from the text. “hm?”

“your hair,” he whispers back.

“oh!” your hands immediately fly to your temple as you turn away from him. alhaitham also fixes his stare up front to make sure you know he’s not prying.

then, once you’ve finished tucking in the loose hairs, you turn to him with a soft chuckle, “what a mess. thanks, ‘haitham.”
