Synopsis 𓋰 As a catastrophic asteroid approaches earth, Jay and Y/n find comfort in the last moments they have together. (Inspired by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga's 'Die with a Smile')

"Asteroid 1009 is expected to make its impact on earth at around midnight tonight… For whatever happens, happens…We wish everyone to stay safe... goodnight Korea…"

Y/n’s head leaned against the window pane of their shared apartment. They couldn’t get their mind off of the abrupt news that the world will end today. On the other hand, Y/n’s boyfriend—Jay— was strumming his guitar in an attempt to soothe his lover from their worries; a way to drown out the voices on the TV that Y/n insisted on keeping on. Yet Jay grew worried too as he watched Y/n look out the window with a pale face. 

“Love, could you please step away from the window?”  He pleaded as they shifted their empty stare to the sky.

“Then, could you stop strumming your guitar? I can’t…I can’t think when you’re not taking this seriously!”

Jay sighed before obliging to Y/n’s request and stood up from the couch to put his guitar back in its black case. While Jay was up, he turned off the TV that was now showing live footage of people around the world saying their final goodbyes to total strangers miles away. It was strange to see the world become so comforting toward each other during a time like this. It really took a matter of potential mass extinction for the world to finally accept each other’s existence. 

Jay walked over to Y/n who had their arms crossed as they watched him approach them. Jay gently shook his head, knowing that Y/n was going to be stubborn. But he couldn’t blame her. Afterall, death was heading toward their doorstep. 

“Don’t give me that face” He muttered while uncrossing Y/n’s arms, “It’s cute, y’know?”

Y/n scoffed in frustration. “Can you be serious right now?”

Jay smiled from ear to ear. “How can I be serious when the most beautiful person on this planet is in front of me? My heart still pounds” He grabs Y/n’s hands and places it onto his chest. “See? You’re making me nervous”

“Am I making you nervous or is that the fact that there’s a fucking asteroid that’s going to fucking kill—”

“Slow down, Y/n. Please… We have time, okay?” 

“Do we really, Jay? We have less than an hour and god knows…what if it comes sooner? What are we going to do?” Y/n expressed with unease lacing their voice.

Jay chose to stay quiet since he knew that nothing could truly ease their nerves. To be frank, he was also growing anxious and helpless.

Yet Instinctively, Jay held Y/n’s hand and guided them into a hug. Y/n’s body molded into Jay’s, finding relief in his sudden embrace. 

“Jay?” They mumbled into his shoulder.

“Hmm?”

“I…I’m—I’m so scared…” 

Jay held onto Y/n a little tighter and rubbed their upper back. “Me too,” He whispered into their ear. “But I promise you, I’ll be next to you now and when this is all over, I’ll be in front of you with open arms”

“You promise?” They whispered back as they looked up to him.

“I promise. I’m not going anywhere if it’s without you”  

Y/n nodded as they felt reassured. Y/n swears that they felt the worries leave their mind at that moment. Atlas, it was the love of their life who was keeping them focused on what they still had left. 

“Y/n?”

“Yes?”

“I love you…I love you so so much”

“I love you too”

Jay kissed Y/n’s lips delicately, afraid that they might crumble into a cry of defeat. He also noticed how Y/n's legs shook from the adrenaline of love and fear. So he swayed them into a dance. He swayed them far away from the window, back into the kitchen just like they used to when the two clumsily cooked and baked together. 

As the couple waltzed around the cold mahogany wood floor, Jay noticed how Y/n tucked their face into his neck just before the sky started to change colors. Jay tightened his grip on his lover’s waist as his heart raced in fear. The room that was once nearly pitch black, slowly became lit in a blue hue as seconds passed. 

The two pulled away from their dance as tears pooled at the bottom of their eyes. They admired the love that they still had. They were grateful that this would be their last moment together although terror lingered in the back of their minds. But they were still here and in love. 

Jay somehow finds a giggle left in him and he lets it out while he wipes away the tears falling from Y/n’s face. He finds Y/n so beautiful even when they’re crying. There was no such thing as ‘ugly crying’ which they warned him about throughout their relationship. He just loved you so much. 

As the sky roars, the room is suddenly illuminated in a bright light. Everything falls mute as you shift your focus on the eyes in front of you. Jay cries desperately for this love he has and experienced. He yearns for the world to let you two live. But you both know how this will end. 

Your left hand rests on his cheek, catching the tears that streamed down and hoping that Jay lets it all go. Jay follows and cups your face to keep your eyes on him while he wipes the tears falling onto the smile he swore to protect. For a millisecond, his gaze falters as he sees the asteroid filling the sky with an orange tinge. The apartment was turning white from the thick light it emitted. What was once a home filled with color, was now turning into a blank canvas. 

Jay rushes his eyes back to yours and leaves one lasting kiss on your lips. Just before the light reaches behind you two, Jay pulls his head away, just for you to watch him mouth three words.

I love you.

༘⋆₊ ⊹ ending note I hope you enjoyed reading this short imagine. It was actually one of the few fics that I cried while writing it. It makes me sad to think of situations like this. I hope if our time comes, we are surrounded by an overwhelming amount of love that drowns out all our worries just like this. We all deserve to leave earth like that. Take care, everyone.
