“You’re not the boss of me”, I whisper to my dog as I put his blanket on the right way.

We took the drunk train home.
They were all absolutely infatuated with him and whispering about how much they wanted to pet him and then shushing each other saying “no that’s rude you can’t! just leave him alone!” so I told them they can pet him if they want and they were absolutely overwhelmed with happiness, while simultaneously being very concerned for his well-being, continually asking if I was very sure that it was okay and that I should please please tell them if I need them to leave him alone.
Basically, it was a great ending to a VERY long day. Sometimes people are really great.

Retromops!
Tumblr media
A member of Züchterkreis für den Retromops- the breeding community for the retro pug in Germany- just shared some really amazing pug pictures. Retromops, or old style pugs, are an attempt to make pugs better. Retromops don’t have the same breathing problems; while they still are a brachycephalic breed, they actually DO have some muzzle, as well as better nostrils. (I’d personally like to see more nostril, but they’re still a work in progress.)
Tumblr media
Hallmarks of the retropug include nostrils that can actually be used for breathing…
Tumblr media
eyes that don’t pop out of the head…
Tumblr media
enough muzzle to actually function…
Tumblr media
and tails that aren’t a health hazard like screw tails are. In addition, retromops are tested for the gene that causes Pug Dog Encephalitis; only dogs without the gene are bred (so no carriers). But the most amazing thing to me? Seeing one of these dogs in action.

friendly reminder that pets’ bodies do not handle fat the same way human bodies do. obesity in animals often greatly reduces their life span. also, body positivity does not to apply to your pets, so discussing the dangers of them being obese is not “body shaming” them
if you have a pet that is morbidly obese due to overfeeding, you are actively participating in animal neglect at best by failing to provide them with the appropriate diet
stop acting like concern over an animal’s obesity is in any way similar to body shaming humans

First Aid Kit for Pets
@irrellenphant said to @ask-drferox: Hello hello! I’m wondering about what every pet owner should have in their first aid kits. I have the typical vet wrap/styptic powder/hemostat/blunt scissors and gauze, but I’m wondering if I should have anything more specific, especially as I live a good 45 minutes+ from the emergency vet (and I’m assuming I only will need the kit when I can’t get to my regular vet). I am a parrot and dog owner, but I suppose this could be a good post starting point for all critters!
A ‘first aid kit’ is a basic kit used to provide immediate relief until veterinary/medical treatment is available, to either preserve life or prevent worsening of the condition/injury. Most people live close enough to a vet clinic to just contact them, but some will try to use first aid over a Sunday night or public holiday to try to avoid expensive after hours services.
It’s not, as some people seem to think, a play-vet-at-home kit that should have antibiotics and all sorts of medication in it. A first aid kit really is the bare basics, not a mobile vet kit. The sort of things I’d carry with me are different to what I might expect people to have in their kits at home. That said, if you’re organizing yourself a pet first aid kit, there are some things you should always have that can be used for most terrestrial species.

for me, the absolute height of humor is giving dogs human titles or positions, or acting as if they are fulfilling the tasks of same. if u refer to ur dog as ur secretary in front of me, i will be a grinning, giggling mess for the next hour. if u tell me ur puppy is “helping” you cook dinner by gnawing on soemthing under the table while u chop things, i will be delighted. when i read an article abt a dog being elected mayor of some town, i basically stop breathing.

I have never done anything like this before. And it makes me massively nervous to be doing it now.
If you know me, you know I hate to ask for help. There’s a level of vulnerability in it that I am not comfortable with. But this is not for me. This is for my very special Evie-bug, who I would move heaven and earth for. So I have to ask it.
We are a low income family. I have always maintained a savings account for emergencies but I have never expected expenses like this. Ones that would leave me utterly pennyless.
Evie is my 4 year old bully breed mutt and she is my heart and soul. On Wednesday, January 31st, she was behaving abnormally, and throughout the night her discomfort steadily grew. A quick nightly ER visit assured us that she had simply pulled a muscle in her back and she was just in a lot of pain. But come the next morning, her back legs were paralyzed and she could not walk. Rushing her to our primary veterinarian, x-rays displayed issues with her spine, and she was referred to a specialist surgeon an hour away. We took her in immediately where she was diagnosed with a massive herniated disc and was taken without hesitation into surgery. The procedure went well and prognosis is good - with any luck, my girl will regain the use of her legs and live normally in time, assuming her recovery goes along without any complications, but as I’ve often learned, there are no guarantees in life.
The estimated costs of the procedure are $3000-$5000. My dog is worth all of the money in the world to me, but I am simply a hotel night auditor from Kentucky who has ambitions of someday starting a photography business. I need help to cover her costs. This bill was sudden and unexpected and I am struggling, but there is not a cost in the world too great for my girl, especially as she is so young and I’d do anything to ensure she can walk again and live the rest of her life normally, as at 4 years old, she should have many years left to enjoy life and live to the fullest.
All funds donated will go directly to Evie’s medical costs. She is my absolute priority, and if it weren’t for her benefit, I don’t think I’d be asking for this help.

Providing the above images because I know Dogblr has been burned before.
The second is just the receipt for the pre-surgery deposit. We do not have a final bill for the total cost of the surgery yet.
I’m trying to get copies of Evie’s x-rays as well.
If there’s anything else I can provide, please let me know.
Editing services are also still open. I would much prefer to EARN the finances, but I know there is no way in hell I will be able to earn $3000 worth from photo-editing services. But if you have photos you would like to be edited and are wanting to help and actually get something out of it, that post is: HERE
My girlfriend also takes art commissions and you can reach her at @cryptic-alchemist or @cryptics-grimoire.
I have over 4,000 Followers on this blog. If every single one of them simply gave $1.00, it would cover most of the cost of the surgery. I’m not expecting that or really looking for that, but I am in need of some help. No donation is too small! We never expect things to hit us this hard financially until we’re drowning.
If you cannot donate, I absolutely 100% understand. PLEASE consider sharing and spreading the word!
Thank you so much for everything, Dogblr. Thank you for following mine and Evie’s journey and I hope we continue to be able to share our lives together with you for many years to come.
Juggling Evie in recovery with the two Aussies is going to be an experience, but she’s more than worth the effort.

Contact with animal life is indispensable to my psychic health. My dog reinvigorates me completely. Not to mention that he sometimes sleeps at my feet, filling my bedroom with hot humid life. My dog teaches me to live. All he does is ‘be.’ Being is his activity. And being is my most profound intimacy. […] Sometimes, from so much mutual life, we trouble one another. My dog is as dog as a human is human. I love the doggishness and the hot humanity of both.
