Dolores was a neat and anxious child who craved attention. Despite her grumpy father, she was kind and looked forward to the future. Although her home life was rather dismal, she thrived in school, where she met Edward. He was kind, attentive, and he lived just down the road in Copperdale. In a different world, it would have been love at first sight. But it wasn’t a different world, and they were just kids. 

Even later on, as an adult, Dolores would dream of going back to those childhood days with Edward. In spite of her father’s unpleasantness, things were simpler back then. Many evenings, Edward would show up knocking at her window, and the two of them would go to the amusement park with change Dolores scavenged from the couch.

Benjamin Lewellyn was a hot-headed slob who hated children. By the time he was a retired elder, he thought he’d escaped ever having any kids… until the day that someone dropped Dolores off at his door. Luckily, this story is about her, and not him. She was only a toddler, sobbing, with a note stuck in her pocket. It explained that Benjamin was her father and whoever the mother was could no longer care for her. 

At first, Benjamin had every intention of calling a social worker and getting rid of Dolores. That probably would have been better for her in the long run, but he didn’t. Instead, he subjected her to an emotionally distant childhood where she was raised by different nannies. He cared little for her, if at all.  previous / next
